Henrik Lundqvist has had more than enough to complain about during his tenure with the Rangers, but to his credit he has kept his mouth shut. That was until recently. It started last week when he questioned the team's toughness and now his frustration boiled over again as he took some shots at the Rangers pop gun offense last night...
“We did a lot of good things, but it's getting old. We just have to put the puck in the net, that's how you win games."
"Special teams are going to be critical going down the stretch here. Our PK, which starts with me, have to be almost 100% here, because (laughs) we're in a position where we don't have the luxury of a lot of goals."
...as I sympathized with Lundqvist after his toughness comments, I'm again with him here. Yes, the team had a ton of offensive pressure and it's hard to complain about 45 shots, but I'm actually going to complain about the 45 shots. That could have been one of the easiest 44-save performances in the history of the NHL. Very few chances from in close and absolutely zero traffic in front of the goal. I have to assume at this point, except for Callahan, the team is collectively allergic to the blue paint in the crease. I can't figure out any other reason why the team refuses to go there.
...officially time to reunite Hags-Step-Nash. Get it done Torts! 2nd line should be Kreider-Miller-Cally and the third line Pyatt-Richards-Gabby. I thought the top line was awful last night despite Gabby's eight shots and a goal. So many missed opportunities.
...and poor Lundqvist, I almost can't watch his post game comments anymore. The guy looks like someone stole his new puppy. Would be nice if his teammates would bail him out for once, seeing how many times he's done it for them over the years.
Here's video of Lundqvist's post game comments...
Here's more post game reaction...
I totally agree about the '45 easiest shots', and also agree that if Miller is the second best center on the team behind Step, then he should center the second line. Miller makes players around him better, ala Stepan. Occasionally I see chemistry with Miller and Gaborik.
One more point - even though its hard to watch the entire game as MSG cameras follow the puck (like a 5 year old player - is that Rangers do poorly against the trap. Montreal a couple of weeks ago is a great example.
When his contract is up, I sincerely hope that Lundqvist will move on and not resign with the Rangers. He deserve to win the Stanly cup and it will not happen with this team. Wherever he will go, I will be there rooting for him. A man can only indure so much punishment and Herik had enough of that. Time to move on to greener pastures.
I've said so much here about Torts, inability to adapt, stubborness, shortsightedness etc. etc. Like a dog chasing the same parked car over and over again what makes him think using the same formula that has failed all season is going to suddenly succeed. Failure to adapt! Of course it's not the coaches fault that his big guns are not scoring as Adam wrote in his blog yesterday...or is it? Line combinations? Motivation? Lack of understanding of the human dimension?? A good coach needs to understand his players heads just as much as their abilities. I'm not in the locker room so of course I cannot know this but it appears this aspect of coaching, so necessary to be successful is sorely lacking with Torts. First and foremost hockey players are human beings and it's the nature of the beast to have fragile psyches. So having said this my question is: When will this stubborn ass re-unite the only line that has had any offensive pressure all year!!! Listen to your fans Torts! Listen to the writers, the experts, read this board. Everyone seems to understand this except you!!!
(These are just my opinions and I don't pretend to be an expert)
I really can picture Hank leaving after his contract is done next season if things do not improve next year. He wants a cup more than money I believe at this point.
Please start Biron on Sunday. Hank you are killing me. Please hold on to the Puck. How can torts keep playing him with his pathetic record of 12 and 12.
I don't blame Torts system for their bad play but I do blame his line choices. How can he continue to put that top line out there with no success? Not only are they not scoring but the line is also giving up goals. I see no logic to keeping them together especially when you consider the success that Hags Stepan Nash had.
This whole overall bad performance, especially last nights loss to the worst team in the league, makes me believe that that are some games that must be staged.. I know the NYR are usually struggling against the "easy to win against teams" and miraculously excelling when facing the "hard teams to play against".. Nothing is ever easy when it comes to the NYR.. At this point I just hope we manage to make it to the playoffs..
I'm in total agreement with the comment about the crease allergy. When Florida scored their second goal last night there were 4 bodies poking at the puck in front of Hank. You never see that with the Rangers. They take everything wide and their forwards hang out on the boards all game. I don't know if that's Torts system or if they just don't have the personnel that's willing to do that.
@TheNYRBlog I know I'm not the only one who WASN'T fooled by those back to back wins. This team is not good, but they should be. Torts bye
@TheNYRBlog get rid of torts, no reason this much talent should be playing this emotionless. He is too hard headed to admit his faults,
So can someone please put a giant picture of Marty Brodeur over the Rangers' sacred logo in their locker room to remind them that HE equaled their entire team output last night. Just as a reminder to them that the little black thing they find on their sticks from time to time is supposed to end up behind the other team's goalie...at least once in a while!
@TheNYRBlog Hit the nail on the head with this one. Not a soul other than Cally and maybe Hags are going hard towards the net. Gotta go hard
@TheNYRBlog I hope this frustration doesn't build and eventually end up with him leaving as a UFA in a couple years.
Katie Strang just reported Rangers are heavily considering bringing Fasth up to the Rangers as his team was just eliminated from the playoffs. And yes the Rangers, not the Whale
@TheNYRBlog done with Torts.
who do we have to bring in to score goals, I feel like even if Sid came here we wouldnt be able to score....
I love Hank and everything he's done for the team since the beginning. My only criticism is that I believe he leaves too many rebounds. Last night, Hank seemed a bit off to me, even though he gave up just two goals. Just like forwards squeeze their sticks too much when they are in a goal scoring drought, Hank seemed to be pressing and handling the puck cleanly. This guy has gone well and beyond the call of duty. As I have written before, the Rangers had better clean up their act, or Hank will walk to a contender -- not a pretender -- when he becomes a UFA in 2014-15.
it IS getting old, I'm with Hank, we can't just keep saying "we did a lot of good things." that may be true, but it didn't win us a hockey game and it's getting late.
@TheNYRBlog I hope he's pissed. He needs to shut teams out.
@scrangersfan sorry bud not gonna happen, first off he cant leave the NewYork lifestyle, second he never gives up on his team. This is a short 48 game season and yes we're having a tough time this season but after making it to the ECF he knows this team can do it again, it might not happen this year but his contract is due after next season, teams that are gonna contend for a cup next yr will be PITT, BOS,CHI,DUCKS,VAN and hopefully us ... all those teams have excellent goalies ... lundqvist aint going no where
@JustinRP37 No way, Jose. You obviously don't know how important it is for him to disconnect from hockey between games and thus NY is the only place for him. He'd get depressed in, say, Boston...
very surprising ...
doesn't sound like a solution to me ... unless we want another deer looking into the headlights
it's really strange. they got a lot of shots last night, but they never really changed their approach. over the course of the game a number of fans and Joe Micheletti were calling for traffic in front of the net. Joe pointed out that Markstrom was seeing everything and we'd have a better chance scoring on a deflection or screen. We'll never know, 'cause the guys don't get in front of the net.
@AE61 I agree with you. What I said that I hope he leaves after his contract is up,not that he will leave. I just feel sorry for the guy breaking his butt every game giving his team a chance to win but thay're not doing the same for him. He really deserve to win the cup but I doubt he will win with the Rangers. I have been a fan ofr this team for almost 50 years and for the most part, all they gave me is grief and heartache.
@maxie Who wouldn't get depressed in Boston? But he can find a disconnect in most US cities between hockey games. In Canada, not so much. But he has always said his number one goal is to win a cup and I believe he will win a cup sometime in his career.
top faceoff guy, with Powe makes the 4th line playable, and serves well on the PK ... even though he's a minus player, i can't see why they would waive him
@AG_Blue yea just letting everyone know. These kids should wait until they can prove themselves in training camp next year...
@scrangersfan hes not the only one who "breaks his butt" every game ... see ( cally, girardi, stall) those guys also deserve a cup so should we "hope" they leave too? this team is built to win a cup, stepan is playing well now, J.T Miller is young and just needs to play more Krieder aswell, we just need guys like Gabby, Richards and even somewhat Nash to pick up there games to where there supposed to be and we'll be the cup contender Hank knows we can be .... for a team where there 3 stars are not producing we are doing alright, if those guys can step it up then we're a very dangerous team, if they dont then we'll have a long off season figuring out what to do with richy and gabby ... i want Hank to win a cup as bad as you but the guy is like RIchter, hes a Ranger for life and if he wants to win a cup we know he wants to win it with us ... hopefully we can make the playoffs and then anything can happen ... thats awesome that you've been a ranger fan for so long so hopefully they can figure themselves out and make you me and all of the ranger fans happy like they did in 94
@KevinDeLury I see you and I have the same lines in mind Kev!
Posted those a week or 2 ago.
Hopefully Torts takes your advice.
training camp would be great ... everybody establishes their compete level there as torts makes everyone fight for a job
