In the last week, Henrik Lundqvist has taken a Dan Girardi elbow to the head as well as slap shots off the helmet from Michael Ribiero and Luke Schenn. Now, after the 5-2 win in Philly last night he is again complaining of headaches (via Bergen Record)...
"It was just my head. I was just thinking if the shot bothered me, got little headaches, then I felt better, but it was still bad. You build up something. It’s just mental. You have to put it aside and tell yourself “You’re fine. Go out and play” and after five or ten minutes you start to feel better."
Lundqvist added that he didn't feel great before the game and has been off the last two days.
Lundqvist also said he had headaches after the Girardi elbow last week and looked woozy after the Ribiero shot on Sunday night.
...whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa....what? If Lundqvist is playing with recurring headaches after the shots he's taken to the head recently, someone on the Rangers medical staff has some explaining to do. How in the world could the Rangers justify clearing Lundqvist to play after everything they've seen with Staal, Sauer and Boogaard?
...and if it's Lundqvist not telling the Rangers medical staff that he's experiencing headaches then shame on him. I know athletes like to be tough, but there's a big difference between being tough and being dumb.
...what's odd, is that with the way the two goaltenders played last night you would have thought Bryzgalov was the one with the concussion.
He said he was hoping for a whistle after the puck to the head but he shook it off. Im sure Ramsey the medical trainer would have tested him for concussion but he also said his shoulders n neck hurt a little after Girardi hit. If he wasnt given an MRI or had an opthamologist check him out than they're risking his health. I've had 2 concussions and its not fun. Its not worth risking more injury. I was playing roller hockey without helmet n took slap shot right above right eye by puck (frozen electrical tape) I continued to play while dizzy n woke up the next day with a huge black eye n vertigo-like a HUGE HANGOVER. I realize Lundqvist wants to play and they need him big time but think about what would happen if he does have a concussion and gets hit again-he can risk permanent damage and not just miss a few games but could miss seasons n most if all his health would risk time with his daughter. I hope he's ok and I hope Nyr has checked him out thoroughly because he's needed off the ice just as much as he is on the ice. Long live the King!
@imaraindancer I remember a certain Wiz played with a concussion this season.
@KellyIsADIC_ Regardless of whether or not HE's currently playing with a concussion, those comments might encourage someone else to do so.
One other thing I would add to this whole concussion thing for what it's worth is that he's playing his best hockey of the season right now - spectacular saves with a lucky bounce or deflection or 2 getting by. The more I contemplate this the more I feel that he's fine
They way the full quote reads, it sounds more like he was describing tension headaches (especially with his history of grinding his teeth). And he's right, they come and go. Been there, done that. Can sometimes be a daily thing that throws your whole body out of whack so you just feel "off." Given the state of the team, the importance of these next few road games and Hank's willingness to shoulder the teams ups and downs, I can see getting headaches from it all regardless of Girardi's elbow and a puck off the mask or helmet.
I am not a fan of "speculating" about concussions. I see it as irresponsible when you don't know the specifics outside of seeing what happens during a game. All the armchair doctors in the world are never going to diagnosis anything and it's a disservice to the player to get fans all worked up over it. Just my opinion though...carry on.
@TheNYRBlog should probably stop deflecting shots with the top of head then
I thought the exact same thing when he said that and I got the worst feeling in the pit of my stomach. Please oh please let it be a false alarm.
maybe Marty in net against Ottawa...we need a healthy Hank....The headaches can also be coming from his neck, maybe a strain or something like that..lets hope...LGR
Yea I thought the same thing.
For what it's worth: Recently I took a pretty bad fall skiing and did NOT hit my head but did snap my head back pretty violently. About an hour or so after i had those flashes in my sightline and then a headache...not brutal but definitive...I felt a bit off the next day, was fine after, then felt a bit odd a few days later...This was in France where they don't totally freak out over stuff and the French doctor gave me a list of things I should worry about, a mild headache wasn't on the list. At the end of the day my neck was more sore than anything but i was definitely nervous for a few days. Basically the diagnosis was "no big deal" and do what you want to do.
According to Henrik, he had headaches from the stiff neck (same as me)...I suppose he could have some mild symptoms of a concussion but I'm sure he's under close supervision by people far more knowledgable than any of us. If there was something really to worry about he wouldn't be playing.
Apparently Lundqvist is feeling pretty well today- making jokes on twitter:
HLundqvist30 Next stop, Ottawa. Hear rumors that the Hobbit is taking a break filming with Gandalf to meet with us up there.. Can someone confirm this?
@TheNYRBlog I think he needs some rest. I though Biron would start against Caps, and give Hank a few days off.
For the love of all that is sacred, if Hank is dealing with a concussion get him the hell off the ice now. I feel like he's been so screwed in not being able to lift the cup yet despite his stellar career. Permanent brain damage in the name of trying to salvage a pretty terrible season would be criminal. And even if we win the cup this year there's no way it would have been worth it if his health is compromised. He's got a baby at home who needs him much more than the franchise does. Not so sure it would be a bad thing for this team to not be able to rely on him anyway.
There's other things that cause headaches, including muscular injury to neck and jaw from whiplash. This doesn't necessarily mean the pain is from brain trauma.
I'm getting so tired of hearing stories that prove our coach is a fucking idiot (I can't fathom Hank keeping quiet on this but if he has I retract this statement). If he has a mild concussion the next blow to the head could be a career ending injury! If he complains of recurring headaches sit him and get him tested for concussion symptoms goddamnit!. that's why we spent the money for a solid back-up!
Hank is too savvy to mention this in the media without already making sure everything checks out with the medical staff. He should get either tomorrow or Saturday in Montreal off, deservedly so, and hopefully with a few days rest he'll feel fine.
@TheNYRBlog if they are playing him w a concussion they need to sit him &put Biron in for a game or so let him rest b4 we lose him 4 season
What are you going to tell me next... Girardi and McDonagh are having issues too... What else is going to happen to the rangers this year. Seems like the rangers are vexed by Murphy's law this year... What can go wrong will go wrong.
Here's the part that confuses me - I can't see him hiding this from the medical staff since he is so freely telling the media. That means the medical staff either has a ton of explaining to do or we are jumping to conclusions. (Honestly, I'm leaning towards the first one because they lost a lot of my trust with the way they handled Staal. If it is that, I'm surprised league hasn't stepped in.) Either way, as much as we need him and I absolutely think we are screwed if he is out an extended period, if he is dealing with post-concussion symptoms, GET HIM THE HELL OFF THE ICE!!!!
@Cujorulesdtown9 ya and i was extremely angry. I bet Bob is recovering from a concussion too!
@Raedances an excellent point. But WE'RE MEN ARRRRRGH.
@1NYN8V Appreciate your thoughts on this. I'm not trying to push the fact that it is or isn't a concussion. Merely laying out the facts of what's happened recently. And if it is "tension headaches" (and hope you're right) that is one crazy coincidence that they only started occurring again during the same week he's been elbowed in the head and taken two slap shots off the helmet.
@jtf1218 Or maybe he's so concussed he really thinks Zuccarello is a Hobbit.
@Bettmansheadonaplatter debatable, the franchise depends on him pretty heavily.... I kid, but I definitely agree... heck if he has a concussion bring up talbot and give him a shot. I mean its not like we would be going anywhere without Hank, so why not give a younger guy a shot.... I just want Hank to be a healthy person, and for nothing like the Boogaurd situation to happen again
@JamesU Very true. What concerned me was hearing him say he didn't feel good before the game and that he's felt off the last two days.
@KevinDeLury Stop it right now kevin
@KevinDeLury shut your mouth.... you better take that back Mr. Delury
@Betweentheworlds Jut stop. Hank is a grown man and an athlete, he knows his limits and wouldn't let a coach force him to play hurt, no athlete would. Like a couple others have said he wouldn't make comments to the media without getting checked out. If you think the Rangers medical staff wasn't checking on him after Girardi's Elbow and Ribiero's shot than you're outside your mind. And as for the torts bashing, I'm sure you were praising him this time last year...
@Betweentheworlds seriously.....do you really think that the Rangers medical staff hasn't already looked into this and cleared Hank of any concussion issues? He is the largest investment the rangers have.....not looking into his health while he is making comments about headaches to the media would look really bad on the rangers. Not all head shots result in concussions n Hank is smart enough to not allow anyone especially Torts to force him to play. He is playing because he can and because the rangers need him right now.
@Melissa (blknblueshirts) Besides the headaches, which could have just come from the recent shots, I'm more concerned with his comments that he didn't feel good before the game and has been off the last two days. That is not good.
Now that NYR Hater Wyshynski is going to get everyone thinking Hank has concussions....
I know he can't avoid elbows, but no one is telling him to be heading pucks. Any idea why he hasn't stopped, at least while he's having headaches?
@RyanMC Yeah, that might have been over the line.
@RyanMC You're probably right - I'm just sensitive toward this sort of thing due to problems I had with an undiagnosed concussion and with what happened to Richter. As for the Torts bashing you're wrong. I did not like him in TB, I was bummed when he came here and I did not like him last year, but hey, can't argue with success and no doubt I've been venting my frustration a lot here lately and I apologize to you or anyone I may have annoyed. I got a good feeling before last night's game - he did re-unite the line and appears to be modifying his system now to fit his personnel finally. It's a new day and we all want the same thing. LGR
@calithirteen Agreed, but given his symptoms he should sit out until the headaches and other symptoms go away.
@KevinDeLury @Melissa (blknblueshirts) I was shocked when I heard Hank make these comments. First thing I thought was post-concussion symptoms and panicked. (I've had one. It's weird how your body reacts.) Then, late last night I got a bad headache and was feeling "off." Woke up this morning with the flu. So, who knows? I just can't believe that the medical and coaching staff would allow him to play if he had a problem.
@KevinDeLury Agree. Those are the comments that bother me too. The minute he said he felt off, I got worried. Then when he continued on I felt sick to my stomach. The Rangers can't be as stupid as they look right now...
@Raedances this one is Pierre, and this one is Sid and you see when you flip the pages Pierre starts to... oh dear... umm
@Raedances how did you get my dairy?...well this is embarrassing...
@PrimsJim @1NYN8V We never suspected anything with Staal either and look what happened. But I tend to agree that Lundqvist is likely fine.
AND that just makes my point about speculating about concussions....
I think it's just Hank, being Hank. He doesn't really hold anything back. The fact that he's so casual about it makes me believe he sees it as the issues he's dealt with in the past connected to the teeth grinding.
If he thought people would start thinking "concussion" I seriously doubt he would have mentioned the headaches because then it just snowballs unnecessarily.
Again, the quote itself sounded more like you would describe tension headaches and how mentally you have to work through that tension to feel better which would make a lot of sense, all things considered. :)
@KevinDeLury @Melissa (blknblueshirts) Yes, yes, and I'm sure I'm over reacting to this news. I just know from experience from being a kick boxer, and having had a head injury not diagnosed, then getting another blow to the head, resulting in a serious concussion, PCS for months etc. Sounds like he either bruised his skull or has a very slight concussion - either way he's more vulnerable to a concussion now and should be rested for a couple games. Sure, I've been throwing the moron term around frequently and I do understand you don't become a premier coach in this league by being stupid but he seems (and not just this year) to be very reactionary and short sighted and it seems to me that it compromises his hockey intelligence. IMHO even if hank is given medical clearance the final decision on Hank is still Torts'. Though he's not solely to blame but his decisions have contributed in putting this team in a tough position. Intuitively I feel there's a turn around happening now and I posted that thought before last night's game (which someone replied to me asking for a stock market tip lol) and I just hope our coach sees the big picture and plays Marty until Hank feels better, then inserts him in the line up from time to time like he was doing earlier in the season. Hank wants to play and will never admit he needs a day off, so Torts has to keep him sharp and as a coach, balance the present urgency with the prospect of his team going deep into the playoffs.
@Betweentheworlds @KevinDeLury Disagree...on some of that. I don't think Torts is a moron but agree he should've put the SHN line back together weeks ago. As for Henrik, maybe I'm naive but I honestly believe that has nothing to do with Torts. Injured players go through Ramsey. Torts doesn't give them medical clearance to play. In this case, it's all Allaire as I truly believe Torts just does what he says in regards to goaltending. Yes, he wants Henrik to play probably more than he should but if Rammer or Allaire say he can't, he wouldn't be in the lineup.
@Betweentheworlds @Melissa (blknblueshirts) @KevinDeLury Aside from the headache problems the last few days, Torts hasn't overused Lundqvist. Every game is a playoff game from here on out, and travel and back-to-backs have been at a minimum so far. He'll sit out one of the next two, and maybe one end of a back-to-back later on, and even if he plays 14 of the final 16 it won't be overuse.
Hopefully the HSN line stays together the rest of the way though. Powe sat out, Nash sat out. I don't think Torts is forcing Hank to play.
@Melissa (blknblueshirts) @KevinDeLury I hate being a broken record but every bit of news I hear seems to point to one thing. We have a bloody moron for a coach. Hank is getting over played now in this shortened 3-4 games per week season. Head ache or not he's getting over used, and if there is any chance he's getting recurring headaches he needs to sit until they resolve and get cleared for concussion symptoms. this proves, along with his utter refusal to reunite SHN line( for weeks after going 6-0-1 with them together) until last night that our coach is a short-sighted idiot. We spent decent money for a quality back up goalie so use him Torts. Remember Mike Richter???
