Kevin Kurtz at CSN California reports that the Sharks have approached Ryane Clowe’s agent about the possibility of waiving his no-trade clause, and a deal could happen as soon as today.
Kurtz, who says Boston, Montreal and the Rangers appear to be the most likely destinations for Clowe, adds that Sharks director of pro scouting John Ferguson, Jr. was in Philadelphia for the Bruins-Flyers game on yesterday afternoon, then he flew to Montreal for the Canadiens-Rangers game last night.
Clowe, who has yet to score this season, is in the final year of his contract that pays him $3.625 million.
...so the Rangers would rather spark their offense by trading for a guy with zero goals, instead of jump starting the entire team by sending Aaron Asham out on the ice to pummel Max Pacioretty last night. Makes sense.
...on the plus side, maybe Sather can get the Sharks to take Pyatt off his hands.
...with the Rangers already not having a first round pick this year due to the Nash trade, I'd hate to see them trade another pick for someone who is essentially a rental for a team going no where fast.
Clowe is exactly type of guy this needs - a mean, nasty guy who can play regular minutes Guy likely needs a change of scenery and has something to prove. Of course he's struggling to score this year so he'll fit right in :(
"..sending Aaron Asham out on the ice to pummel Max Pacioretty last night."
What!?? Has Asham dropped the gloves once this year?
Don't worry about his lack of offense. Clowe brings other intangibles to the table....intangibles this team sorely lacks.
Clowe is a big physical presence. By playing him on the 3rd line, you've added to overall team toughness. Asham on the 4th line, Clowe on the 3rd.
Clowe can also play the game...has good hands for a big man. He can put the puck in the net. This means he can used at times on the 1st and 2nd line....which means...
Clowe can play the role of "protector" and "space creator"...for players on your top two lines...as Clowe has stated in the past....
"I take it personally when guys take liberties on teammates."
And lastly, Clowe is a vocal locker room guy. If you are not hustling, or leaving it all on the ice....Clowe will get in your face and let you know it.
Make this deal...make this deal now.
Ugh. Just stand pat and bring up some of our young talent. Sit our wasteful vets, like some have suggested.
@TheNYRBlog This season can be saved..the problems are clearly internal..addition by subtraction needs to happen.This team lacks confidence
When vets are upset at 5min/ game they have to be quiet or get shipped out. They gutted the guys who hold the team together and step up. Now it's a few sommeliers on the perimeter.
@TheNYRBlog wait a min u said-they need balls well this guy has big balls do something to change this mess
Admit they made mistakes, cut Pyatt and Hamrlik. Bring back Haley and bring up McIraith. Can it really get any worse than it is?
@TheNYRBlog fear not the end of torts is coming, bring on a new era.
I looked at his numbers in years past and they're great! I don't know who he played on a line with so it could be a product of line mates but we have great players maybe he can spark them too!
@TheNYRBlog great point as always Kevin
We need those ugly got to the net goals and some more grit we lost with Prust move. He would provide that and may be the just the spark we need. Change of scenery in the thick of a playoff race might be what the doc ordered for him. A third rounder is worth taking a shot at him.
@TheNYRBlog anddd if u noticed we had a TON of chances vs MTL that were pretty much ALL due to finally hitting.Clowe is EXACTLY what we need
@TheNYRBlog relax with ur ZERO goals.Thats 1 less than boyle,2 less than healthy scratch asham,same as powe. Clowe scored a bunch last 2 yrs
@chrissteeleNJ I'm just going to wait for Wednesday and see what happens lol
Idc about his stats on another tean in anotyer systen. Hes a work horse up front and we need that for sure. I am scared though to see who we would give up. Im tired of brad Richards already
Didn't realize it, but Rangers have three or four 3rd round picks this year, so maybe giving one up for Clowe wouldn't be as bad as I thought.
@TheNYRBlog I don't understand this philosophy. It seems as though Torts wants a team loaded with 3rd line players.
@tygalpin still worth looking at seeing if Sather can fleece the Sharks for Clowe, sure he hasn't scored this year but he might just need a change of scenary...if we can get him on the cheap id say do it
@Zyke13 Plenty if balls on the team. Just no one is playing with them.
@Drewsis So did Boyle.
Unfortunately offense is expensive. I'm with you though.
I could just see the New York post header to an article, "clowe and the clown" him and torts next to each other.
@MObaseball5 I don't want clowe at all.
@TheNYRBlog nahh not even comparable players.Take a 2nd look @ their stats last 4 years.Boyle had 1 nice season. Clowe bunchh of pts each yr
@jslnyr1102 why do people think a guy who hasn't scored all year will spark this offense?!? We have plenty of offensive talent and need solid D. Hammer was worth a try but there was a reason he was put on waivers... emminger, gilroy, bickle and even Strahlman of late aren't cutting it. Stahl and Sauer are nowhere in sight so if anything we have to shore up the D and hope that the Offense can start getting a little puck luck and some chemistry.
@chrissteeleNJ I don't either
@TheNYRBlog i def hear that.i think we can get him only givin up like boyle/pyatt minor leaguers or 2nd/3rd round picks
@Drewsis I hear u. Not 100% against Clowe but hate to give something up for a rental with zero goals.
@JMK8363 I think getting a defenseman should be 1st priority. Totally agree with you on that. Maybe if Slats brings in a high energy guy or a physical presence it might spark the team. I guess we are in the unknown with is the problem offensively.
