Lots of question about John Tortorella's futur. The suprise will be that the Rangers let him go.— Renaud Lavoie (@RenLavoieRDS) March 31, 2013
...not sure if this means it'll be a surprise if Torts is let go or that the Rangers will surprisingly let him go. Big difference.
...while I still don't see it happening this season, with the Rangers in full free fall mode I don't think it's out of the question to think that Torts is on the hot seat. It has really gotten out of hand around here.
...and if the Rangers are going to fire Torts, it would actually make more sense to do it now than over the summer as they might get a bounce from it that they could use to make a run to the playoffs and hopefully beyond.
...again, wacky season. Maybe I'm just crazy, but I'd still like to see him get a chance to turn this around under normal circumstances.
Meanwhile, Sean Avery, fresh off his Fashion Police appearance, chimed in on Tortorella...
...i am as big an Avery fan and apologist as you'll find, but I don't like this at all. You're the one who decided to retire from the game, so stay out of your former team's business. A tweet like that really puts his ex-teammates in a tough position.
...now having said that, Avery is very close with Richards and Lundqvist, so I don't question that he has access to this information. Because he does.
Here's Derek Stepan on Tortorella and Avery's tweet after last night's embarrassing lose (via Daily News)...
"Our problem isn't with our coaching staff, and it hasn't been. And I think if you asked everyone on our team, they would say the same thing, that that's not the case here...But I don't agree with (Avery's tweet) at all, no. I think it's safe to say that all 23 guys on our roster would say that's not the case."
...i'm going to take Stepan at his word, but what else was he going to say?
sean avery was not one of my favorites, there might be something to what his tweet has posted. It is just as well that the rangers do not make the playoffs. For it will save them some embarrassment,
Its amazing how people forget... It is Tirts who doesnt dress the physical players... it is Torts who doesnt paly them.....his best players get pounded on and he does nothing at all....cause hence he doesnt care its not in his systems as u all claim the guys ins an ahole..... and disrespected Sam Rosend the other do so to have balls after another posters call shim and and say no to disrespect Torts is a fing joke.... As an interview of a Montreal player said they have more confidence cause they have physical players who can handle anything... so they just go out and play with no worries..... Rangers are playing like they did 3 yrs ago.... It was Gabby getting pounded on by Carcillo in the corner as all the damn players watched and did nothing.. and yeah Torts did even less so lets ger real.....for him to pick on him is utter bullshit after that event
He is a bully and doesnt evealute well Sullivan has been a damn failure since he has been here as a power play coach..... and still has a f--ing job....and i give Avery all the credit..... he stood up to him and told him about himself.... a player who who hit and stir some shit up to wake up the team..... how many of those guys we have on the team now or since then or now? NONE.... callahan for last two yrs was a missle in every game u heard the announcers say it every other sentence and this yr u hear it every other game at times....he is a good player and its wearing on him as well he cant do it alone especially at his size.....
when ur best player HANK calls out the team ( the COACH) about toughness why is it falling on deaf ears....we have and have never had a physical defense man... but Torts player project Eminger is always on the team.....its amazing... WAKE Up Fans...its as plain as day U gotta adjust ur system to the players u have and protect them so there is no fear.....
Tortorella's system is one that sets a team up for failure. Most teams come out of the gate looking to score goals, and usually do. The Rangers, play a passive system, thinking defense first, grind the play along the boards, try and cycle the puck, hoping for a lucky shot to go in. When the opponent scores first ( most often than not), it becomes even harder to score. I am sick of this boring, losing system. Time to find a new coach with imagination.
@TheNYRBlog that Avery account is not verified are we sure it's legit?
Avery has every right to his opinion...he was a relevant player and Torts didnt like him, even though he was a huge fan favorite...suck it up Torts
Avery really had no where to go. Torts was not about to let him back in the locker room and no other team was going to pick him up and even if he was given an offer Avery was not about to leave NY. His opinion of Torts is that his style does not motivate everyone and that's likely very true but I can't blame the lack of production from our big guns solely on Torts or his style. These men are top notch competitors - they all want to score and win. Rangers gotta shake this bad mojo soon and make a run for the 8th seed. Did I just say 8th seed ? Well let's start somewhere!
First, Avery: The guy actually had some talent, but between 2010 and 2012 he let his play slip so he could be more of an asshole. His value to the team diminished over that time. Funny guy, though.
Second, Tortorella: Despite what I've said recently on this blog, I'm not against firing him. Thing is, I don't see firing him with less than 15 games left being any help this team. If I were Slats, I'd give him a camp and 1/3 of a season to turn things around.
Also, for all of you who call Tortorella a dumbass, a douchebag, etc. Ridiculous. Firing him to shake things up is one thing, but completely disrespecting the man that helped Slats build this team from the ground up and give it an identity is fucking stupid. It makes YOU sound like an unappreciative and ignorant fan. Tortorella is just a character, and he's old school. Funny how some people will accept Avery's completely asinine behavior on the ice, but when the coach gets pissed off by a loss it's the worst thing ever. OH MY GOD, he was kind of rude to Sam Rosen that one time! Fire his ass! Please.
If firing Torts will help this team win, I'm all for it guys. But you have to pick your spots for this kind of stuff, and bottom line is now is a bad time.
Avery is a clown. Always has been always will be. Torts didn't't play him and they hate each other so of course he is saying this. I am supposed to believe Richards wants Torts fired? Please no one has a longer leash w-Torts and gets more understanding of his mistakes than Richards. I doubt he is feeding shit to Avery. Avery and media people r just trying to settle scores w-Torts. The Garden does not fire people anymore. Unless Dolan hates Torts which is possible
I said it before and Ill say it again, just like with richie, I give torts this season as a mulligan, yea they are suppose to over come rough spots but almsot all coaches and players have shit seasons. If next season nothing changes, buy out richie and get rid of torts. But I give them till next season to see if this was a fluke or not.
@TheNYRBlog What does Avery care??? Thought he threw his skates in the Hudson?
@TheNYRBlog w/ the lack of preseason players need to step up, look at teams loaded with new players and overachieving, coaches don't skate
As much as I've been down on certain players and Torts I still think this team given time will succeed. I don't begrudge Avery making the comment and don't completely disagree with it however, as much as something has to be done a knee jerk reaction of trading Gabby the ghost or Torts isn't likely to propel us to a cup. The team has to decide they want to be a team and play with the competitive fire they all certainly have. Herb Brooks didn't make too many friends when he coached the 1980 Olympic team to victory but he built a team. I don't agree with many of the decisions Torts makes but I also know that I am not as knowledgable and not in the locker room the way he is either. It's always easy to second guess a coach when things go wrong, but I believe we will weather this storm and be a better team for it. We've had horrible puck luck and some big players not playing up to par, but the talent is there and the chemistry and fire will like a Phoenix rise from the ashes. I hope that instead of trading away key talents or firing the coach the team looks at it's self and decides to play as a team! They are creating more chances and the pucks will start to find the back of the net... maybe not in time to save this season, but hopefully without too many more upheavels they will finally gell into a cup worthy team! LETS GO RANGERS!!!
In an unrelated note, did anyone see how Habs fans are claiming Nash was trying to hurt Price last night when he ran into him? lol....
I hope Slats is not deterred from making a couple of moves in lieu of our last 2 games.
We are still tied for the 8th slot and maybe a defenseman and a depth player who will throw his weight around can help us.
This is the same situation the NY Giants were in 6-7 years ago. They got rid of Shockey, Rangers got rid of Avery. Coughlin was the biggest hard ass, the players couldn't stand him. There were talks of letting him go. You know what he did? He lightened up on the players, he changed his ways, became more of their team mate than a coach just giving orders. The players love coughlin now. Torts is an asshole, like a dictator. Look how disrespectful he is to the media and especially sam Rosen. The guy has no respect and I can only imagine how he treats his players. Torts is one of those guys that is always right, and no one likes that shit.
So what?? It's their jobs to answer up for whats going on... They don't have to bad mouth Torts or the staff, but they need to give their insight and be called out on certain topics. About time someone besides fans say it... I've had enough of hearing excuse after excuse. As much as I love the Rangers Team and will never quit, I'm disappointed. Something is going on here and changes NEED to happen.
I get it Kevin. But Avery knows Torts, and Avery is a great player when he has confidence. Obviously there's a crack somewhere. Maybe it's Torts, or the locker room, or the chemistry. Whatever it is, it needs to be fixed. Maybe Zuccs will be a help. But Avery is saying something a lot of people are saying. He just can't get into trouble for it this time.
Things like this are why Sean Avery is always going to be relevant. Because he makes himself relevant. Damn, I miss that aggression out on the ice.
Not saying what Avery said might not be true, but he put his teammates in a tough spot with those comments. Stepan already had to answer questions about it.
@TheNYRBlog Think he said same thingseveryone is saying..... just got heard by!!! Have tried all combinations... Team has tuned Tort's out!
Still amazes me that Avery was suspended 6 games for words, while guys get either 0 games or only 2-3 games for blasting somebody in the head, from behind. NHL is so backwards it's ridiculous.
@TheNYRBlog stop crying...he said what many fans r feeling...and the press actually listens when he speaks...
Happy Easter Kevin and to all the bloggers. If we are to keep Torts get him the lunch pale guys he needs to support the top 2 lines. If not, then find a replacement next season. Slats or the organization in whole did not bring in the proper depth players to replace the one we lost last season.
EXCELLENT! T You are dead on!
@MikeBlue I didn't hear you complaining when we finished first in the east and went to the conference championship with this system. Wasn't boring then was it.
@Al_Ski21 It's him.
@coontzbloontz Well said.
@JMK8363 Holy shit, positivity in these darkest of times! it's like seeing a unicorn on this blog...
Best Comment. You sir made my day.
@ATCRyan I'm fine with a blanket term like this, I feel like 40% of Canadian hockey fans are stupid.
I was about to say the only difference between Coughlin and Torts is Torts is too stubborn to change his ways. His way or the highway.
@NYRangersPP Didn't need Avery to remind us. Their play this entire season is reminder enough.
@RobCanone Not cryin. Just think it's messed up. Putting his former teammates in tough spot. Stepan already had to answer questions about it
@jslnyr1102 Happy Easter to you.
@TheNYRBlog I'm shocked he would stoop that low
@ATCRyan @TheKing I agree. Coughlin took the team bowling and was willing to let loose a bit even if it wasn't in his DNA. I don't see that in torts. I think they need a life size poster of sather and for every win the take a portion of his clothes off. It worked in major league!
@TheNYRBlog But the way this team is playing and expectations before season...dont u think is somewhat warranted?
@RobCanone Agreed. I think making a trade would be a waste. Especially if they give up picks.
@TheNYRBlog Essentially no trades at deadline will be justification from mgmt that this is a total redo and not a quick fix
@RobCanone Absolutely. Lots of blame to go around. Easy to blame the coach.
@TheNYRBlog ok fairpoint not only one that has underachieved...entire staff plus mgmt underestimating impact of trades and nonsignings...
@RobCanone I'm not saying what Avery tweeted may not be true, but hearing it from him just sounds like sour grapes. Torts has underachieved.
