Larry Brooks at the New York Post says that the Rangers’ waiver claim of defenseman Roman Hamrlik will make a contract offer to Mats Zuccarello more problematic.
Under league rules, each organization can only have 50 players under contract. Hamrlik represented the Rangers 49th player. Which means if the Blueshirts sign Zuccarello, they could be severely hamstrung at the trade deadline.
Brooks adds that the Rangers currently have approximately $2.75 million of available cap space that equates to approximately $5.96 million of space at the deadline.
Brooks further notes that the club could free an additional $1.25 million by placing Michael Sauer (concussion) on long-term injured reserve.
...not a big deal to me at all if Rangers need to pass on Zuccarello. While he proved last year he could spark the Rangers power play, their recent success proves they don't necessarily need a return of 'The Hobbit' to do it again. Would much rather have the flexibility to bring in a proven center at the deadline than Sather be compromised because of a player who's never consistently proven himself at the NHL level.
...and as much as I'm not a Hamrlik fan, if the choice for the Rangers was between him and Zuccarello for that 49th slot, I'm glad they went with the defensive depth, which you can never have enough of.
...hey Larry, appreciate the unfriendly reminder on Sauer. Depressing.
Hamrlik will be string in front of the net which we need..he is no fighter but will not let guys set up in front of the King. Has a powerful shot that actually hits the net if given a chance to shoot. Blocks shots just as good as Giradi..Now how about letting Haley play and bitch slap Martin a few times..lol
Unless the hobbit has learned to play defense and forward, it's a no-brainer going for veteran defensive depth over a PP/shoot-out specialist.
You saw what we brought up from it already. Thomas, Mashinter, Kreider, all good players but too raw to hang with the big boys. Besides Hamrlik is a veteran, how bad can he be?
I'm sure it doesn't matter until it gets down to cap space, but why isn't Sauer on LTIR already? I also agree we have a few guys right now in the minors that could do what Zuc would do with us, but we don't have a Dman that could. Go with the defensive depth.
its unbelievable that the rangers farm club has no better players than Hamrlik ,why have they got a farm club for , answer me that
@TheNYRBlog i agree plus this is romans last go around and is on a contender you will get his best (or what ever is remaining
@TheNYRBlog Not a huge roadblock if they really wanted Zuc they just trade someone further down the depth chart within the 49 contracts.
I totally agree. I would have liked him to here under different circumstances, but I don't think he'd be a difference maker and certainly not worth handcuffing ourselves for any potential deadline moves.
@Chris_Roche Agreed. But they might not want to do that or might be looking to just trade draft picks at deadline.
