Haley Recalled; Richards Questionable
Written by Kevin DeLury on .
In anticipation of a physical game tonight against the Flyers, the Rangers have recalled Michael Haley from the CT Whale.
Haley has 9g, 12a and 158 minutes in penalties this season.
...i was one of a few Rangers fans who liked the Haley signing this offseason. I vividly remember how he sparked an Islanders run two years ago when he fought Penguins goalie Brent Johnson. He definitely has the ability to be a catalyst for the Rangers. Unfortunately, he could just as easily pull a Kaleta tonight, so he needs to make sure he walks a fine line.
In not so good news from the morning skate, Brad Richards was out skating early, but left before it ended leading to speculation he will not be ready for tonight.
Arron Asham did not skate and will miss his fourth straight game.
...not sure if the strategy is to just insert Haley if Richards can't go or possibly move Gilroy up to forward and then pull someone out of the line-up (Bickel) for Haley. I'd rather they just insert Haley, because as I said in the previous post, tonight is likely to get nasty so both Haley & Bickel will be needed.
Pat Leonard at the Daily News thinks the lines might look like this tonight...
Hagelin-Stepan-Nash
Gaborik-Boyle-Callahan
Pyatt-Halpern-Miller
Haley-Powe-Bickel
...expect that fourth line to get 2 minutes tonight.

@TheNYRBlog you never responded to my tweet the other day, but i guess i have my answer
@NomarFachix He was recalled but not sure we actually "saw" him on the ice tonight. lol
As Haley's agent...I fully endorse this move. :)
Seriously tho....this was a move that had to be made.
I've been asking for Haley to be called up for weeks now. Since the Oprik hit, my fear was that the lack of response to Kreider getting laid out would spread through the league.....and it did
Nash.....
McDonagh.....
Richards....
It has to end.....
Good job by the Rangers calling him up.
Darren Dreger at TSN saying Richards will not play tonight. Any chance that Kaleta suspension is increased b/c Richards is now injured?: https://twitter.com/DarrenDreger/status/309038851593220096
@KevinDeLury good question. here's another. any chance our total number of turnovers goes down or that the PP gets better? had to say it. not trying to be snarky. i WANT him to succeed of course.
Haley will give this team a lift, there is no question--curious if Bickel and him have a quick bury the hatchet conversation. Haley destroyed Bickel in a fight a few years back, left him with a really bad black eye. I remember Bickel saying he thought Haley jumped him early. He did not. I agree, he can be our Avery reincarnate, but if he pushes it too far, Tortorella is not the kind of coach who is going to allow that to fester. He is going to have to earn that trust.
@LanceGold1 I don't think there will be any bad blood between the two. Just Haley doing his job.
They fought 3 times during that season---and 2 of the times they jumped each other....twice Haley cut him open. Always an interesting dynamic when players with those reps change teams. Like you said, hopefully it is just something that they move past. I have been calling for Haley all season---constant ignition and he absolutely will stand up for his teammates-something Mashinter and others simply have not done.
SIDENOTE: Haley scored a goal for the Whale on Sunday afternoon against the Sound Tigers, so he can find the net too.
I'm kidding.
He'll see one shift and end up fighting some bum.
Can only hope tha Richards being out inspires Gaborik to step up his game. If he starts scoring this team becomes a lot mor dangerous.
Haley has my respect for this alone: http://www.hockeyfights.com/fights/111307 He may not have won the fight, but he hung in there with one of the better fighters in the league.
Also wondering in terms of hank. I am sure he goes tonight, but is he getting a rest Thursday against the isles or Friday at home against Ottawa? Biron is going to be playing more in the near future.... We have a ton of games in a short period of time
@slapshot13j I agree that we'll most likely be seeing more of Biron but it seems like the more Hank plays the better he gets...He gets in a groove then he gets a game off and then the next game he plays so so
@Dudeinski asking cause I will only be back for one game this year, and its Friday so I was wondering if I get to see hank or if it will be biron...
@slapshot13j @Dudeinski You could always just call Torts and ask him who he's going to start? :)
Well deserved. He's been good the last few weeks in Hartford. And wouldn't worry about him pulling a Kaleta. He hasn't been a dirty player in the AHL this year, so as long as he doesn't change his game he'll give them a positive physical edge.
@TheNYRBlog hopefully halpern plays on the second line. If it's boyle we are SCREWED !
I think your follower McPhee21 just peed in his pants a little with excitement ;-)
So since Richards is not playing, shouldn't THAT have factored into the NHL penalty for Kaleta. What an effin joke. Haley's a good call-up. Hopefully he makes Bickel a little more obsolete.
@slapshot13j @gravey94 Agree they shouldn't, but they even say in their explanation that Richards returning factored into the decision. Joke.
What if you put Callahan at center? I know he's not really one but he's taken a lot of faceoffs recently so if he can play the middle, it may work. Then you keep Pyatt in top 6 and move Boyle to wing of third line. Either that or give Miller a chance at center on second line. I just don't like Boyle there.
@KevinDeLury So do I but if Torts doesn't want to put him in that position then Cally was an option. Probably should've written them in reverse order though as Cally at center isn't ideal. (Although isn't he technically the center on the PP? Not that that's a good thing for him...)
I like him just from watching the video LOL. Maybe he is what this team needs ... A spark!
I hope injuries are not starting to be a trend with the rangers this year. Tonight is a huge game and we need all hands on deck, if we want to win tonight. Philly is no pushover
Haley and Bickel both need to be in the lineup tonight. Further, maybe Haley can have a get-together with Talbot.
@TheNYRBlog I love this and don't at the same time. I agree & love the toughness and how that's a HUGE plus, but no Richards infuriates me
@jenngolding Line-up looks real weak without Richards. Boyle could be 2nd line center. Not good.
@TheNYRBlog Literally agitating. I got a little nauseous looking at the projected lineup tonight, do you think Richards will be ready or no?
Haley had a nice goal the other night I think he could take ashem s spot if he plays good
Hailey v. Talbot tonight, then Hailey send Bryz to the moon. I'd rather see Halpern on the second line.
O my god, I never thought I would miss Richards so much. Boyle a second Line center..... That's just disgusting, I really hope he plays or it is going to be a long night... Haley should just play for asham, and take Bickel out. I'm really frightened about having Boyle on the second line, we don't win this game with him in our top 6, unless Nash has a hat trick.
