Andrew Gross at the Bergen Record reports that John Tortorella has switched up the lines for tonight's game vs. Carolina to ignite the offense...
...can someone explain to me why Torts refuses to reunite the Hags-Step-Nash line?!?!?!?! We've already seen that the "Welcome to the Jungle" line makes this team way too top heavy. The top line I mention along with a second line of Cally-Richards-Gabby balances the line-up so much better.
...this totally reminds me of back in 2007-08, when the Avery-Dubinsky-Jagr line was on fire under Renney and for some reason he pulled the plug on it and the offense wasn't the same for the remainder of the year.
...and for the love of God can Torts please break up that third line. Talk about holding a player back. Miller has regressed tremendously on this line. Remember how well he was playing when Richards was out and he was centering a line with talent. Get Kreider up here now!
Here's Nash on being re-united with Richards and Gaborik (via Blueshirts United)...
"The last time we played together we had some success," noted Nash, who leads the team with 23 points and is tied for the team lead with nine goals. "It was early in the season and we were still trying to find one another. But when the three of us play together we have to make sure we are responsible, play good defense, and get our offense from that."
In other news from practice, Arron Asham says he's close to a return, but needs to get into game shape.
...as you know, I've become a huge cheerleader of Haley's, but as I've thought about it, if Asham can rediscover his toughness, he is probably the better option for the Rangers because he has displayed some offensive ability that the Rangers are sorely lacking. Plus he seemed to have some chemistry on the fourth line with Halpern and Powe.
Finally, on defense Roman Hamrlik will play in his third consecutive game while Matt Gilroy and Stu Bickel will be the healthy scratches.
...this better be Hamrlik's last chance. I'm not saying Gilroy is Brian Leetch, but he has been much more reliable than what I've seen from Hamrlik up until this point.
I will attempt to explain this to you Kevin but since I am merely a fan and Torts is in theory anyway a brilliant hockey mind I shall speak only hypothetically.. Since it's been demonstrated that the only line that has shown any scoring chemistry all season (and of course they were together for too short a period of time to know this for sure) is the Steph -Nashty-Hags line where as, though early in the season Richards-Gabby-nashty showed no chemistry whatsoever and infact looked downright abismal, though on paper this should be a good offensive unit. So, IMHO - it Appears, from this season's "ice follies" as well as Torts' other coaching tenures that our coach is egotistical, short sighted and highly stubborn who like a rabid dog chases the same parked car repeatedly, and would rather appear right than do what is right for this team, and that is the reason why he refuses to give that line a try. I know it's not this simple and I'm speaking from the perspective of a frustrated fan but why the hell do you not play the one line that showed any promise. These guys were really tearing it up when Richey was injured and I'm sure our "esteemed" coach could have found another line combination to play with Richey. In all fairness to Torts he may feel like it's time to give the "superline" a shot again and see if they will generate anything and I'd prefer to be wrong in my opinions and win than right and lose, but if this experiment does not work, and I do not think it will I hope that he will do (from a fan's perspective) the right thing and reunite the one and only line combination all season who has not looked offensively inept.
moving people to wings they arent comfortable with is stupid. keep gabbi where he was and nash where he was. have cally switch off. Nash and gabbi have dominated the league on their regular sides through their career, why change....or why change the nash, step, hags line........
@TheNYRBlog Kev,rangers are not tough enough, fast enough .break out is easy to defend teams pinch.
So the only way they could get Gabby back on the right wing was to move the only player who has been playing well and actually scoring out of position? That makes sense...
Boy, I really thought Gaborik's OT goal against the Islanders was going to give him that boost of confidence and kick start him to scoring some goals. One lucky bounce is all he needs.
Just want to say, I bet 100 dollars with a friend that the rangers would finish higher than the islanders... First time I am Nervous about this... I thought it was easy money at the beginning of the season :(
I hope like hell we win tonight. I live in Raleigh and am not prepared to deal with the fresh load of crap I will undoubtedly receive if we lose tonight.
The three RWs have all been at their best playing RW. Obviously that doesn't work unless you can roll three lines evenly, which they can't do as currently constructed. I know Torts might not even want the kid back up yet, but bringing back Kreider could help balance everything. Hags-Step-Nash Pyatt-Richards-Gabby Kreider-Miller-Cally and then three of Boyle, Halpern, Powe, Haley, and Asham would help even things out and gets all the RWs in their correct position. Pyatt hasn't scored except when playing with Richards, and that line of Callahan with the rookies was pretty good in their short time together.
I really wish I could ask torts why he refuses to put our best line together. Its pissing me off more then the losing.
@TheNYRBlog EXACTLY. Our onlyy line that has worked. He put rich w\/ nash 2 get him goin, now nash is supposed to get him anddd gaby goin??
@TheNYRBlog probably bc it means Gaborik back on LW with Richards and Callahan? Or Callahan moving to LW to accommodate Gaborik?
%s Don't worry I give torts 10 min into period 1 before he starts shuffling the lines like a deck of cards %s
So how is putting your 3 hottest players on the same line not causing the team to be top heavy? This team, as we have seen the past few weeks, goes absolutely no where unless Gabby and Richards start contributing. Nash could be a good catalyst to do just that and putting substituting Cally for Nash on Step's line is not exactly a death sentence for that line.
This is the worst possible move... Gaborik needs to be on the right wing. Callahan can adapt, so I say move him to the left and let Richards center those two, or better yet let miller. Nash steps hags should be the first line, as I have said before we are 6-0-1 with that line, and the only loss was when we collapsed against the islanders and lost in a shoot out.
Been saying for I don't know how long "Rangers will NEVER win with Dolan/Sather running the organIzation. They are right back to the perennial problems: can't score, little heart,etc.....get rid of Sather and hire Keenan. Only Dolan would never have it.
If the sixth D-man is only going to get 5 minutes of ice time I think Bickel is the best option. At least he brings toughness and can handle things if the game gets rough
We're just never satisfied as Ranger fans, are we? Reuniting Nash with Gabby will hopefully fire him up. Nash loves holding onto the puck, using his body to shield it and make plays, and Gabby only likes getting the puck and get rid of it. Pairing him with an elite playmaker and passer like Nash is worth giving it a shot again. And I'm not sure the Kreider we've seen this season is the answer. I don't think many people complained when he was sent down. Sure he's racked up the points the past few games, but I'd hate to see him come back up, play timid again, then get sent down a few games later. We've seen this play out before this season. Let's just hope we play the way we did during that 4 or 5 game winning streak last week and get on a roll here, starting tonight.
Respectfully disagree Kevin. With the way Stepan and Hagelin have played lately putting them on a line with the always relentless Ryan Callahan creates a very strong and versatile line
Assuming that the top six scores some goals. These guys are going to have to score a goal. There has to be some goal production from one or two of them.Other wise bring up Krieder or even Noobs or CT but there has to be goals from someone in the 3rd or 4th lines.Necessary.
@TheNYRBlog I like it. Last time they stacked the top line, Hags\/Step were struggling. Now they are playing better & is a better 2nd line
@Jbianco it's the way it should have been from the beginning... I know it's two different sports but you didn't see the Yankees move jeter out of shortstop when arod came over... And I think we all know that was the right decision
@nyrfan747 well knowing we will lose, like always, at the prudential center tomorrow and I wi being taking a truckload of crap for being 0-2 against them I don't feel pity ;(
@jtf1218 These are the lines I want as well. Really liked the Kreider-Miller-Cally line. Thought they brought some great energy. This was the lineup where they rolled all 4 lines and at least the top 3 were all fun to watch.
@jtf1218 who cares what the lines are just bring up kreider so we have someone that can put the puck in the net in our bottom 6. It's a joke that we have 4 goals 5 on 5 by our bottom 2 lines all year, there was a piece done on NHL.com about it
@ChrisP I wish someone from the media would ask him.... In my opinion the media asks some horrible questions... I thought NY would be able to find some tougher media guys
@Garts2point2 But Nash is a right wing as well, so he has to move or Gabby stay on LW. I think Cally can play either wing.
@gravey94 Fair point. I just like the mix of that line better. Same with Cally-Richards-Gabby. I think Cally's willingness to go to the net will open things up. Just my opinion. Bottom line, I hope whatever the lines end up being they work.
@slapshot13j Actually if you look at the lines, Gabby is on the RW and Nash is moved to the LW.
no way he's sitting until they get a win
@KevinDeLury thank the heavens. I have been asking for that since the beginning. Being a Yankees fan when arod came over they didn't move jeter even though arod was better. There was no reason to move gabby off his wing, if anyone has to adjust it should be Nash. Gaborik has been here and earned that spot, torts messed up big time there
@AnnoyingJoe @KevinDeLury he probably told torts that Personally. And he will definitely be going again tomorrow
