Heading into tonight's game at MSG, the Flyers are aware that history is not on their side as they've lost five straight at The Garden and are just 1-8 in their last nine games against the Rangers.
The Flyers say they will try to use the bitter rivalry as motivation tonight (via CSN Philly).
“Well, every game against the Rangers is a big game,” Briere said. “I think they’re right around us, a few points behind us in the standings.
“They have some games in hand. The rivalry makes it more fun. We all know what happened last year. We’re trying to rectify that.”
“They’re a solid team,” Simmonds said of the Rangers. “They all stick with the program. They all block a lot of shots and they make it tough for you to get to the net.
“Obviously, we’re going to have to battle through that. It’s going to be a good blue-collar game, and we have to be strong in the corners and strong in our defensive zone.”
The Flyers currently sit in the eighth and final playoff spot, one point ahead of the Rangers. However the Blueshirts have three games in hand.
The Rangers seem prepared for the surging Flyers, who have won three of their last four games overall, as Carl Hagelin said this about tonight's game (via Blueshirts United)...
"Philly is going to be a lot more physical game than it was against Buffalo, so we need to come out with more speed, more power, and we have to be more aggressive. We didn't have enough hits nor enough blocked shots last game. So we have to come out and play Rangers hockey."
...Rangers have been playing out of their division for almost a month now so it's nice to get a rivalry game tonight. Gives it a little more juice. At least for me it does.
...as far as the Rangers recent dominance over the Flyers, I'm throwing that stuff out the window. This is a different season and the Flyers are hot right now. I've actually been shocked at how tame the first two Rangers/Flyers games have been this season. I have to wonder how the Rangers will hold-up physically if the Flyers decide to take the body. Tonight would be one of the few nights I wish Asham was healthy so that both him and Bickel can be in the line-up just to try and keep the peace. Toughness will be tested for sure.
We just need to go out there and put a bunch of goals in on Ilya "This goal is so humongous big" Bryzgalov.
I love Simmonds' game. I tried to argue elsewhere that I would rather have a guy like this... a Shanny in his prime... or a Lucic any day over an inconsistent, highly compensated Gaborik. These guys can score... drop the gloves... and grit nastiness and character to any team and you know what you're going to get night-in and night-out.
Bickel and Haley will probably combine for 6 minutes on the ice and 20 minutes in the box. Should be a fun game to watch
Rangers recall Micheal Haley from the Whale. So Richards probably isn't playing tonight. PP should be great, but it's going to be rough at center. Hopefully Halpern will step up, and Miller too if he plays center.
a win tonight could be the start of something. pretty much the most critical game of the truncated season so far in my opinion. a big game by gabby would kill two birds with one stone. with 2 assists last game i would say he is "trending upwards".
I'm going over to my sister's home to watch the game tonight, so the rivalry will be alive between us. Hope the Rangers bring their "A" game. Having Bickel in the lineup will help. Guys like Boyle and Girardi may be asked to do more physical work. Flyers playing better - yes - but they are beatable and they sure as Hell aren't the Blackhawks.
@TheNYRBlog u never answered my question about Boyle why is he playing slow can't skate bad hands and centers gaborik something wrong
@KevinDeLury word is Richards was on the ice but not for long, Gilroy is likely out, and Asham is still a bust and not skating. Thoughts??
I freaking hate the games with the flyers. I don't even enjoy one minute of them. The rangers can't score enough against these guys. Unfortunately I won't be home until late in the 3rd so atleast ill save myself some aggravation.
@TheNYRBlog They're playing the flyers, islanders,Sens and Caps this week..We're going to see LOTS of fist-a-cuffs in the next 5days #NYR
@Jbianco As long as they do it the right way and fight for the sake of sticking up for their teammates. I don't want to see Haley pull the bs he pulled with the Islanders and give the Flyers unnecessary power play opportunities. Toughness without stupidity was what made Prust so valuable, since he never really took a bad penalty to send a message. That's what Haley needs to do.
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG Rangers have beaten the Flyers eight out of the last nine games. What's not to like?
The rangers and tots specifically would not stand for any cheap or dirty play. Haley has to know that if he wants to play on this team he has to do things the right way.
@TheNYRBlog Kevin u r kidding we played buffalo and Tampa don't u think we need a real center everyone player he sends down plays well i
@KevinDeLury I live in PA and 85% of my friends are flyer fans. Either I hear how much better the flyers are when they win, or what a bunch of lucky/cheater/dirty players the rangers are. Haga
