In the game of hockey you never want to get down early. Unfortunately for the Rangers, they're making a habit out of it this season as they've now given up the first goal in 20 of their 31 games.
And once they're down, they haven't shown a great deal of resiliency as they were only able to comeback and win seven of those 20 games.
Some of the players addressed the poor starts after the game last night:
"Maybe we talk too much about it. We focus on 'Let's get a good start.' When that doesn't happen maybe we over think it. Maybe we should talk less about it and just go out and play. And hopefully we can get good starts going forward. It is really important. It's so hard to come from behind."
"It seems like the last few games our starts haven't been been the best. We got to figure it out. Get out there and jump on the lead. We've been chasing goals all season. Definitely need to be ready for first few minutes of games."
...the confidence of this team is very fragile right now, so giving up the first goal this often has been a killer. Torts mentioned how the team seemed to freeze after the first goal last night and that's not how a winning team should react. Jumping on teams early in games will go a long way towards helping the mindset of the Rangers.
...and it's obviously not just mental. If you're spending all your time chasing goals, by the time you catch up you've likely spent all your energy, which allows your opponent to take advantage. It's no surprise the Rangers have been struggling in the third period recently.
...last year, the Rangers had no problem opening up games by punching their opponent in the mouth and daring them to punch back. By the same token they were also able to withstand a punch to the gut, knowing they had the gumption to deal with any adversity that came their way (unless they were in Montreal). I've yet to see this team display that mentality once this season.
They're too tense and don't flow early in games as a result. Hockey is a game of flow, a synastry of art and brawn and underachieving easily becomes a downward spiral. Then when they're warmed up by the 2nd they loosen up and start playing well (debatably speaking of course). They should consider bringing someone in to do group meditations with the boys. (I'm serious), or do Pranayama (Yoga breathing) or something like that. Other teams in other sports have done things like that to boost their teams' success and to break slumps, successfully I might add but you don't hear about these things because it's considered too "flaky" or "new-age"
Torts completely dismissed Lundys comment. Great coaching. Wouldn't be surprised if Lundy wants out after next season when contracts up.
You'd think after 2 days rest they'd have more jump in their game. These slow starts remind me of the days when the Rangers were an older team
Maybe they should trade for Anthony Robbins. He'd probably be a lot more effective at fixing things than any player they could possibly trade for or bring up. They need to collectively clear their heads and start fresh for the stretch run.
Someone on twitter commented on the playoff ticket invoice... Obviously have to purchase, but I am very unsure of this team making the playoffs
I was listening to the game against the Caps on XM a few weeks ago, and the commentators cited a running tally we have going for something like the past 3 seasons where our record when going into the 3rd period with a lead. Something like 60-0-3? If that's not motivations for these guys to play hard the first 40 minutes instead of the last 40 minutes, i don't know what is.
Team comes out looking tired. Makes no sense. On HOME ICE you have to come out with more jump and enthusiasm.
@TheNYRBlog Got emailed by MSG about playoff tiks. My $73 seats will be $115 for the first Round. Really? Let's get in first.
@TheNYRBlog bad starts...simply put. yesterday's game was very spirited. good energy. but missed getting that big goal again.
@slapshot13j Seems like a safe bet then. Will NYR refund you plus interest when the team doesn't qualfiy? Or do they make you roll it in to next season?
