With Michael Sauer, Roman Hamrlik, Matt Gilroy and Steve Eminger all likely not to be re-signed, Dylan McIlrath not ready for a full time role in the NHL just yet and Marc Staal's status in doubt, the Rangers should be in the market for a defenseman this summer and Scott Cullen at TSN says Ryan Whitney, Ron Hainsey or Marek Zidlicky could hold some appeal.
Whitney (30-yrs old) put up some big points his first three seasons (32g, 105a) in the NHL for the Penguins but knee and ankle injuries have kept him from duplicating those numbers. Whitney, who had 4g, 9a last season, just finished a contract with the Oilers that paid him $4 million per.
...obviously Whitney would need to take a huge pay cut, but he's a veteran who could spot start when the blueline gets banged up and/or Del Zotto inevitably struggles.
Hainsey (32-yrs old) hasn't scored in two years and has just 34 career goals. He is also a career -29. Hainsey just finished a contract with the Jets that paid him $4.5 million per.
...Hainsey doesn't score or hit. So how could he hold some appeal for the Rangers. Oh, he blocks a ton of shots? Apparently, Cullen doesn't know Torts is now coaching in Vancouver.
Finally, Zidlicky (36-yrs old), who just completed a three-year deal that paid him $4 million per, had 4g, 15a and was a -12 last season for the Devils. He has 176 (45g, 131a) power play points during his career.
...earlier in his career Zidlicky was a stud on the power play, now he's nothing more than serviceable with the extra man. But similar to Whitney, I'd feel comfortable plugging him in for a spot start.
...of the three, I'd be fine with Whitney or Zidlicky as a 6th/7th defenseman. Both would have to be willing to accept a lot less money as there's no way they should be offered more than $2.5 million per. Not sure Rangers could even afford that without buying out Richards. Especially if they want to bring back Clowe as well.
What is everybody's problem with Steve Eminger? Sure his game isn't flashy, but sure does a damn good job. I would rather they resign him than go out and get anyone else.
Pass, pass, pass. anyone else available? If any of those 3 Whitney would be my choice. Hopefully MDZ will get a brain transplant during the off season and have a stellar year for us - the kind the organization thought he was capable of when they brought him up at age 19
is mcillrath EVER going to be ready for the NHL? serious, non-retorical question there. does he suck? is he projecting to be a career AHLer?
anyone know? dont bring in these broken down 30 year olds. bring up a kid, let him fuck up without fear of the doghouse and let him play through it.
also Derek Roy is a UFA. he's kinda had some downer seasons lately. I wonder if he liked av enough to come here kinda cheap.
Whitney is only 30 Ted. May not be putting up the numbers he did in Pittsburgh but he also hasn't been healthy. But if he can stay healthy he can stay healthy, he can still play. And how exactly does a puck moving defenseman who can join the rush not fit AVs system?
I think Torts put it best when he critiqued his team as not "stiff" enough at the end of this past season. They need toughness on D just as bad as they need goal scoring, if not more. If you can't get it out of your own zone by creating turnovers with big hits, you can't score. I wish McL was ready, but I doubt he is since D take so long to develop. I say suit up Bueke. He's only 76. He'll be fine.
Who says McIlrath isn't ready? I beg to differ. Get a D or 2 in trades. See if there's enough interest in the likes of Boyle, Pyatt, Powe and Asham to get a d or 2. FA market sucks. No to any of the ones you mention Kevin.
One more comment -- I would trade anyone in our system for Phoenix's Connor Murphy ( Phoenix is absolutely loaded with young defensive prospects) or Jacob Trouba from Winnipeg.
The crop of free agent defensemen is very thin, and even thinner when you look for offense from the blueline. I know everyone is down on MDZ, but man, the alternatives are EXTREMELY bleak. Who else would they get that can put up 40+ points from the blue line? I would love to sign Ference or Scuderi, but I don't think the Rangers can afford either one. I think we just have to hope that Rath of God has a great summer and comes to camp ready to become the Iron Hand of the King!
I strongly believe this is the perfect opportunity to trade Marc Staal ( If he PROVES to be Healthy - I know he's out injured!) to Carolina. The Hurricanes are desperately looking for a large, mobile presence on their blue line, and what better option than the final missing Staal brother. We can free $4M. in cap space, acquire their highest 1st round draft pick in yrs. (in a very talented draft) and their best d-man, Justin Faulk.
The guy Rangers should sign is MIKE KOMISAREK! Was a beast when drafted by the Habs- right handed shot, takes body well and blocks shots.. Also false on statement made on Eminger- no reason why he won't be back for 700-900k played exceptional solid when the D line got hurt
So, what is the feel about Lecavlier... we could definitely get him cheap and probably for 2 years. He is known to be a PP stud, and is not that old...
None of these guys interest me... all second rate players, he may not be as good on the PP, but I would rather have Eminger for 750K then these overpaid over the hill players.
In your opening paragraph, I didn't see Stu Bickel's name in that list. Is there a possibility he some how manages to stay on the roster? Or was it Torts the only one that didn't really like his play?
Kevin man your worse than Slats whats with all these aging vets u want to sign, dude lets at least give McIllrath a shot at making the lineup. At least aim high these 3 are way past their primes & none fit well in Veenyo's system of play!
Wait. Staal's status in doubt? As in it's doubtful he'll play next year? Me no get. Help small mind.
@IcyCup Give the kid a break...is he even old enough to drink yet? He's had a HALF of year at the AHL level and is meant to be a Defensive style Defenseman. It typically takes a while for those guys to develop to be NHL ready. We all loved John Moore this year right? It took him a good few years to be able to play well at the NHL level and he still has a ton of developing to do. The only difference in his case is that he's a great natural skater. A great skater can likely make the jump in levels faster because they can recover better if they make a mistake reading the play. So patience and maybe with any luck he'll get his feet wet with some success this year.
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG If they go after Roy I'll shoot myself. Enough small skill players. They need grit and size.
Also, there's really no chance they look at Emi? Thought he really surpassed expectations this year. He was also one of their most solid hitters along with Stralman (it makes me sad, that I put Stralman and Emi above G as far as hitting).
@lennynyr Any report that I've seen says he's not ready for full NHL gig, but who knows, maybe he impresses in camp and makes the squad. I haven't seen him play, so just going on other reports.
@MikeBlue Jacob Trouba will never be traded. Best defenseman not in the NHL. Homerun pick.
I honestly believe DZ is going to have a break out type season this year. Allow him to be more free in the offensive aspect of his game and his confidence will build. Probably the player most excited about the exit of Torts on this team.
@MikeBlue you could be right on trading staal now when you can get something for him. he is good but i dont think the sun rises and sets on him.
@MikeBlue Carolina is hot and heavy looking for defence, but most of the "experts" say that this year's draft is pretty weak after the top 3 and I don't think Sather pulls the trigger for a #5 pick and a young D for an all-star proven Defenseman. I don't think Carolina does it either since they have a shot at some D help at #5.
@Josh6 Lecavlier centering for Nash and Clowe - I'm in! Although if Tampa buys him out, he will have a ton of suitors, especially Montreal.
@Josh6 Agree that none of these guys excites me, but they would be nothing more than a 6th/7th guy. Can't imagine there are too many 6th/7th dmen around the league who excite people. Would only sign on the cheap.
@VinnieR Good point on Bickel. I think that depends on what kind of defenseman the Rangers bring in. I also think McIlrath might be ahead of him on the orgainzation's depth chart.
@dahjay I've seen nothing that has said his vision is back to normal, so until I do, his status is in doubt. Now that could mean he misses the first month, three months or full year. Or he could be at training camp. No idea.
I'd take Ference he's not going to put up a ton of points but he's about as solid as they come defensively. Also pretty damn physical. We could get him for around 2-2.3 mil a year probably also
@GiveGartneraCup Eminger just quietly goes about his business and plays solid hockey.
@KevinDeLury @lennynyr I've seen him play for the Wolfpack (formerly Whale) and McIlrath is comparable in his skating ability to Beukeboom or Purinton (and in today's NHL that's not a positive) DM is slow on his first step, but not bad once he gets going, but today's NHL is much faster than when Beuke and Purinton played. He needs to improve his first step if he's gonna play in the NHL imho.
I feel the same way man, I really think Mcdonaugh is capable of running the power play and breaking out offensively. Moore as well. And would love it if we signed Ference.
Mentioned Ference a few weeks ago and saw so I wanted to post, but you guys beat me to it. With Staal still a question mark, Ference could be a solid veteran with a real physical upside. Living here in Boston, I can tell you he's a respected teammate, a fan favorite, and very involved way from the team. I think he'd fit in real well. Forget stats, I'd take him leaps and bounds ahead of these other guys. Let John Moore and McD fix the power play and sign a D man who can CLEAR THE CREASE!!
