Going into the off-season, most Rangers fans assumed Brad Richards being bought out was a slam dunk, but Larry Brooks at the New York Post says not so fast...
"Given the change in coaches and the absence of cost-effective available talent down the middle on the free agent market, it is beginning to seem more and more likely the Rangers won’t be asking Brad Richards to clean out his locker during the amnesty buyout period that will follow the Stanley Cup Finals."
...while the Rangers would be taking a huge risk here if Richards gets injured during the season and becomes ineligible for the buyout, I'm still not 100% against keeping him around this year as I think he still has some hockey left in him. Plus, the Rangers are in win now mode and a veteran who's "been there" is very valuable come playoff time. I know Richards' performance this past postseason didn't prove that theory, but I'm going to give him a pass due to the lockout. You guys might not agree with that, but there's no denying that he was woefully unprepared for the beginning of the season and it just spiraled out of control on him.
...having said that, I want him bought out no matter what next summer. Even if he has a renaissance 2013-14 season, his contract is such an albatross it makes absolutely no sense to pay him $6.667 million per year until 2020. It also puts the Rangers in a position to be charged a full cap hit if Richards retires in the final three seasons of his deal. No thanks.
Rangers NEED to get Brian Bickell. I'm sure there are other positions to fill, but it would be nice to see someone over 5'10 on the Rangers.... and get some defenseman on the team or get on Mcilrath's and train his ass off all offseason to get him up here. Get some size and the scoring will come
I watch most games on DVR, so lots of slow motion and stop action. Richards has lost 1.5 to 2 steps. Teams defend him by closing him off as soon as the puck is on the way to him, never mind when he touches, as he can't blow past anybody. Teams take away his time and space immediately. How many players, in any sport, regain lost speed? Frankly I was almost hoping to hear he was having off season surgery, and that would explain the dropoff. I think the NHL is getting faster all the time. Great guy, thank you for your service, but maybe we can translate that salary room into more solid 3rd and 4th lines. As depth seems paramount to win the Cup, as I am watching on TV from CHI and BOS. Maybe find some guys that can check, hit AND chip an occasional goal.
I don't like our team regardless of the money on the table. Next years team needs to be bigger and meaner, period. If they can make that happen with Richards still around, so be it, if they need his money to go after UFA's like Bickell, Clarkson, Horton, or Clowe, they have to buy him out.
I'm sure a lot will have to do to what terms they agree to with McD, Step and Hags so they may hold off on this decision. Also, I don't think it's bee mentioned but the league dd really well financially this year in spite of the lockout so rangers brass might be anticipating a great year next year and therefore I hire cap in 2014-15 - which I believe is the first year the cap is set by Hockey Related Revenue for this CBA.
If the Rangers decide to keep this guy than maybe an 8th seed at best... I Can't see Hank sticking around after this year if Brad isn't bought out
Richards has played his last game as a Ranger. Look at it like this: the chances of him getting hurt are small, maybe 15%. But the chances of him bouncing back and scoring 70-80 points are just as small. Our centers for next year will be Stepan, Brassard, Boyle and Lindberg/Miller/??? I'm ok with that down the middle and saving $6.6M we can use towards a free agent or deal at the deadline/draft.
Can't wait for this listless hap to get injured!!! Then we will get his $100 million cap hit for life.
Honestly, he'll bounce back and be fine under the new coach, but hey keep it up with the buy out talk - we'll be looking for depth that isn't out there, while Brad is putting up numbers elsewhere on the cheap. Stop being so NY, give it this one last year. Enough with the cap talk, Sather will work his way around that in the coming year.
He needs to be bought out. Are the Rangers going to pay him all that money to be a third line center? Because at this point, he's not better than Stepan and Brassard who will no doubt be centering the top two lines next year and beyond.
I dont care who is coaching. Richards is way beyond his prime and we need he cap space to lock up some key players in Hagelin, Mcdonaugh, and others
there is a lot of great players in the nhl; stamcos, crosby, ovi, bot are they able to win a cup, henrik wants it now, can't blame him; ain't many like brodeur...
He's kinda reminding me of Captain Pizzeria Drury (leadership), who was paid a ton and was utterly unwatchable towards the end of his career. Granted Drury blocked shots but like...he was brought here to do way more than that.
look at the yankees, jeter is near 40, can he ever be the same?? a-rod is near 40, 2 hip surgeries, all that money he singed for DUMP THEM!!!!
Someone just commented on Rochards conducting himself like a pro. It's the Internet so I can't sense sarcasm, but this guy is a disgrace. How much are we paying him? (12 million last year alone). He also has a letter on his chest, and either one of two things happened... He declined to the point where his body can no longer play hockey, or he came into the season so out of shape that he couldn't play a period of hockey let alone 3. Either way the guy is a joke and has worn out his welcome in NY. Professional? Please... Don't waste your breath, the guy is a cancer!
NM.... the fact that you have a post suggesting we trade Staal tells everything we need to know about your hockey knowledge. Go watch the mets dude.
Get some defensemen on the team?? What team are you watching?? Do you even watch hockey?? And we only had 4 everyday players on the roster that are less than 6'. So what the hell are you talking about??
Ritchie costs the Rangers 2/3 to buy him out. None of which counts against the cap. Dolan's pockets can handle picking up the tab on Richie.
@leewardtide finally a voice of reason!!
@leewardtide how do you know if he will bounce back?? i know this for sure, we all could be dead in the blink of an eye, i hope he does well elsewhere.
@PaulRussomanno they need to sign their main players now, maybe sign 2 more who ca n score an play like they want to, it's about ATTITUDE, you do or you don't
@_Jack Drury's body was literally falling apart, not just slowing down. Not sure what Richie's is doing, but just seems like he's lost a step.
Jeter is going to play until he is at least 43, and is still the best shortstop in baseball. But, i tend to think Richards is more like arod, except a lot worse in his prime. The guy is a joke and embarrassment
@RangersVW14 Don't take everything literally guy. Wow, I can't believe the Rangers passed you up and didn't give you a contract. A guy with your detailed analysis should be in the system......or on ESPN. Absolutely nothing gets by you. Please, please, please teach me the ways almighty one! I am not worthy.... I will sacrifice a chicken in your name! I hope to be as divine as you one day. I will build a pyramid for you in the valley of the assholes and fill it with gold plated human excrement to show future generations what you know....
Ahhh.... I get it, I've been searching around these posts an you are the "know it all" on the forum. Don't worry, every forum has one. Your the guy where only your opinion is the only opinion and everyone else is wrong. The only thing I as is you change your name to obnoxiousdouchebagthatdoesntknowwhentostfuvw14 so when people join, they know that your "that guy"
@RangersVW14 @RangersVW14 you think the dolans pay brad richards contract? WE DO. That's why 40 dollar tickets in 2006 cost 120 now--CEO's don't take pay cuts, they raise prices to make sure profits only go up. So, yeah, lets do what's best for the team, but lets not pretend for a second like we weren't the ones who paid for Wade Redden to take buses in Hartford, and for Chris Drury to make pizza places in Conneticut while our fix went up every year. I say let Richards play another year, if it needs to be done...do it then. It's bad enough grown men get paid 90 million dollars to play a child's game--we pay them NOT to play it here in NYC!
I'm very obviously being optimistic, that being said, I find it hard to believe anyone else has his upside/experience if things go well. If he winds up in Dallas killing it with Torts - while we're missing a center - it'll be a hard pill to swallow. Even as a 3rd line center ($ aside), who do we have that's better? His level of production (or lack of) has created opportunity for Step and Brass. V will be good for him and look for his leadership. The intangibles matter too. Sick of all the hate.
HA - jeter is the best ss in baseball? this is so inaccurate its hilarious. Tulo - pre injury was putting up better numbers then jeter had seen in years. Segura is by far more exlosive - desmond is better - everth cabrera is better - Yes jeter is an all time great but he is not the player he was. And is not the best ss in the game today - not even top 5.
The best ss in baseball??? Lord, I trust you are kidding, otherwise you dropped about 2200rpm's on the credibility meter kid.
@Josh6 i like jeter any day than a-rod, they should buy him out..
There's just no getting through to idiots like you. And since I know it all, Richards signed a 60 million dollar contract, not 90. So keep making shit up buddy.
@RangersVW14Well you're obviously the kinda guy who uses the word obviously a lot--you guys can rip on me for saying it's absurd to pay a guy 2/3rds of 90 million for playing 1.5 years of hockey as much as you want, but I've grown up with know-it-all fans like you my entire life--one season you clamor that we NEED to get the Richards on the market, the next you want him gone. No one is above this BS, which is why good players' careers have always come to NY to die. Richards was just fine his first season, decent point production and a lot of clutch goals--let him play another year under a new coach who doesn't make his players hate playing hockey, and if he still sucks, THEN we can pay him to not play for us. And "of course ticket prices went up?" They tripled, under a salary cup. I saw the Kings beat the Devils last year (booked the trip based on thinking our boys would be there) and they were charging 30 a ticket for season ticket holders. But yeah, you're right, business is business and we should pay Richards another 40 million dollars to go play for Philly (and don't play the renovation card--prices on my season tix doubled before the renovations started). It's really cute to see that the little people are looking out for the big guys, though. Hope you sent a nice card to Mit Romney and @ChesterMeekins, I don't what having a paper ass means, but I wouldn't give up on top tier talent because they had one mediocre half season and a crappy playoffs--if you clowns like you had their way, we'd buy out half our team every single season. Richards this season, Nash the next...I sincerely hope that whether it's with us or someone else, Richards puts up 80 points and shuts you people up.
@RangersVW14 A business man too!! Oh how the gods have blessed you with such knowledge. We are all much better off with your presence. Please... drive off a bridge so you can return to your place amongst the hockey gods.....
You obviously know nothing about the business side of hockey. Far too risky to keep him around. He's not going to return to a point per game player so he's not worth 6 million a year and if he gets hurt we can't buy him out at all. Far too risky risky. And of course the ticket prices went up. It's the nature of the business! Especially as the NHL's popularity has grown since the last lockout. And Dolan is dumping his own cash into a billion renovation to MSG. Did you think he was being charitable?? They need to get Richards of the books. Period.
@leewardtide i can only speak for me, i do not hate richards, just not for the rangers.only he knows ho good he is or not ; if is honest about things..
I like Jeter, but he has been overrated as a SS for years. He did have a good year last year though.
@jmacwilli last year he was is what i meant.
@Josh6 the ra gers buy him out now, be done with it
@Josh6 i think he should be bought out, wasnt arguing that...my only point was about the yankees actually lol
@Josh6 didnt win it here so irrelevant to me, if vigneault cant get richards going, dump him at the trade deadline
The thing is that would be 100 million dollars, and they feel they might as well see if he can play and not just hand it to him. Also no salary cap in baseball so it doesn't matter
