Bruce Garrioch at the Ottawa Sun reports that the Rangers have been quietly shopping J.T. Miller to see if they can get some proven help in return before tomorrow's draft.
Garrioch adds that Miller didn't live up to expectations.
...yes it's Garrioch, blah, blah, blah, but as I have written the guy was on the Gaborik trade before anyone else, so I've at least got address this. Having said that, he obviously doesn't know much about Miller because, to me, the Rangers didn't have that high of expectations when he came up last season. They more or less plugged him in hoping to give the team a spark and some much needed depth. I'm sure they would have liked to see him score some more, but I don't think you can say a 20-year old didn't live up to expectations in his first 26 games in the NHL. It's not like the Rangers thought they were recalling the next Gretzky.
...to the actual idea of Miller being traded, it might not be as far fetched as you might think. Miller was drafted in the first round by the Rangers because his game fit perfectly into Tortorella's high tempo, hard forecheck system. But with Torts and his game plan now residing in Vancouver, I wouldn't be surprised if the Rangers felt Miller was expendable, especially if they don't think his game would flourish in Vigneault's puck possession system.
...as far as a return for Miller, because he didn't light it up last year I don't think the Rangers can get much for him. Maybe a second round pick and/or a mid-level defensive prospect. I bet Torts would be very interested in bringing Miller out to Vancouver with him as he obviously was very fond of the 2011 first round pick.
JT Miller is a good prospect, a successful prospect with excellent if not outstanding upside. If he does get traded its because Sather can get a real good deal. They aren't getting rid of him because he made mistakes, have to remember we have another good center prospect with possible outstanding upside -Oscar Lindberg.
I just hope we make some kind of move this weekend that will help us this season. Not getting my hopes up too high tho.
I keep hearing more and more about players bein let go/bought out. I still have a shred of hope that Sather will change his mind.
I don't buy this for a second. I don't think Miller was ever looked at as a guy who was going to be in the NHL in his first pro year. Also, the notion that somehow he was drafted specifically for Torts' system and that he doesn't fit into AV's is bogus.
Wow, people are actually taking a Garrioch rumor to heart? You all need therapy! Sure, he was on the Gabby trade, but does 1 rumor out of 1,000 mean he's now credible? Ugh.
Way to go Rangers, trade a first round pick for a second rounder makes a lot of sense to me(not) way to build for the future. Bunch of MAROONS!!!!!!like Bugs Bunny would say.
Sure he made some mistakes....he is a kid. BUT, he played hard, fast and aggressive.
Sather (and a bunch of other GM's) have to learn that "winning" in the NHL is different than winning the Cup.
To win the cup you only have to make it to the playoffs. It doesn't matter if you won 10 more ordinary, non-intense, regular season games because your guys can fly around the ice. Just make the playoffs. THEN...it is an entirely different game and is 100% a war of attrition. Big, Tough, Fast....whoever has more of those guys will win 90% of the time. Big, tough and fast puts the puck in the net and keeps it out of yours come playoff hockey. Don't invest money in ANY players that are not 2 out of 3 in that department (Richards) and never let go of players that are 2 of 3 in that department (Miller), unless you are damned sure you are getting it back.
9. San Jose
10. St. Louis
The highest you can put the Rangers with their current roster is 15th best in the NHL in my opinion, and that is only because of Hank. I know anything can happen, but I would even put teams like Columbus, Washington, Philadelphia and Winnipeg ahead of the Rangers.... Sather has to improve this roster before day 1...
Here's a good analysis of my thoughts on Garrioch. From 2008, and it still as true as ever.
TL;DR Garrioch claimed the Kings turned down a trade that would send their #2 pick of the '08 draft and Mike Cammalleri in return for......Evgeni Malkin. Sounds credible.
I don't get the didn't live up to expectations comment. That's ridiculous especially since he did show flashes of talent. If he is traded it won't be because he is a "disapointment" it's because they can get something in return that makes them a better team.
Also keep in mind when he was drafted he was seen as a 3rd line checking center not a big time playmaker. He was also seen as someone who could develop into a top-6 fwd over time. So I find it hard to believe the Rangers are giving up up on him. Remember Stepan wasn't seen as a top-6 fwd when drafted & look how he turned out.
I can see the Rangers trading him but not cause they are down on him.
Can't be any worse then Manny Malhotra, and he played well under AV. On the other hand Richard$ is coming back so why would we want a guy who at the age of 19 was playing in the NHL.
I am OK with this provided we get some grit and size in return. I think we would be nuts to trade MDZ.. I think he had a horrible year, but who replaces him in the line up? As bad as he was in the playoffs last year, there was nobody to take his place so he just stayed out there. Unless someone overpays, I say hold on to him and hope he regains his form from 2012. Ill say it again, we need to let Zuc go and use his money for a role player. He has no spot in top 6 and has no finishing skills (big heart yes, but we need big bodies).
Something has to be in the works... With Richards staying, it just does not add up. Miller and DZ could bring back a pretty sweet package... maybe Carolina's number 5 pick and a prospect.
In my humble opinion, the only thing Garrioch may have discovered here is the Rangers intentions to pick higher than their first pick at 65th overall and would possibly be willing to trade a player like Miller to accomplish that. I nearly stopped reading after Garrioch wrote that Miller "didn't live up to expectations" after only a handful of games. If that doesn't set off your BS alarm, nothing will.
Not how I wanted this weekend to go. So... instead of buying out a rapidly declining, over-priced player and freeing up huge cap space for all kinds of options, we are keeping this player and putting on the block a promising prospect, along with DelZotto. And we can look forward to Sather making Lundqvist the higest paid goalie in NHL history.
It's been said before and it needs to be said again; virtually every player in the NHL is going to come up in trade discussions on some level. If Tampa Bay comes calling about Derek Stepan then Glen Sather better at least listen for a few minutes just in case they're considering blowing up the team and moving Stamkos. If he didn't do his due diligence with every possibility then he wouldn't be doing his job. Sather is going to engage in baseline discussions about Miller, Kreider, McDonagh, Staal, Hagelin, Del Zotto, etc. And 98% of those discussions are going to be dead within 15 minutes.
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG If he gets out of bed with his mistress and does his job maybe he'll come to his senses.
@cb1 It would be a desperation move at best. how do you trade a good prospect of that age who's already shown a Cally like will to win. No he didn't score but what he showed us here at his age is extremely rare - how can you even think of moving this gem - but then again this is Slats, who in light of the Richey blunder is showing about as much intelligence as a manatee chasing a boat propeller.
@blueshirt21 Parentaeu was a journeyman minor leaguer who left as a UFA. Not really the same situation.
@gravey94 wasnt his nickname "malkin to the kings" for the longest while after it proved to be wrong?
@jmacwilli dont think the Rangers will make the playoffs with this current roster... But I definitely agree with Miller
Hey Josh Idk much about his game but Mctavish has said he is going to trade Horcoff. He is trying to she'd his salary. Is he a fit w-the Rangers?
He is also dumping Hemsky but I know I don't want him. He is Typical underachieving one dimensional European. Lots of skill but no clue on how to score. Reminders me of Zherdev Frolov et al,
Is Horcoff a fit for us?
I agree....I have always thought Sather was going to try to trade back into the 1st rd. This is a deep draft so I am sure he wants to be a part of it.
I agree something is up. I wouldn't be surprised to see some kind of trade w-Canucks where Torts & AV swap some players they like.
@FREE LINDBERG Sure.. I am sure Carolina will do that deal.. I wish I had your optimism!
@Herman_NYRBlog Absolutely right. It's just frustrating that Garrioch still has a job.
@Herman_NYRBlog 100% correct.
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG your high
@ThrSage Right now no one is a fit for us... We have no extra cap to work with because Slats decided to keep Richards... We have 0 flexibility to work with, so a guy like this is a Pipe-dream
@ThrSage Sure, trade up to the 1st round and draft someone like Hugh Jessiman makes sense to me. LOL.
@ThrSage If we do, I want Drouin (which is probably a stretch) or Shinkaruk. Two wingers that know how to put the puck in the net and have so much talent. My third option would be Valeri Nichushkin, who is a power forward... 6'4" 200 pounds... and again knows how to score...
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG didnt you hear Christian Thomas is our Steven Stamkos lolololol
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG They would not take either of the players you mentioned... no one would
I always liked him. apparently they want a second pick (something we don't have) and a prospect. maybe they would take something other than a pick.
Ur probably right but ya never know who we can dump. Remember we do have 14-m in cap space & I know we have to sign Stepan Mcd hags but maybe Sather hardballs them. Garrioch just mentioned it & I also read in several places as wellFleischmann is available. I would love to add him. He is a big body & a winning player who does all the little things plus can chip in some goals. Though I am curious to see how our skill guys do in AV's system I would trade Hags for him. I don't think Hags will ever score enuff goals to be a 1st or 2nd line player & he is too small to be a 3rd line player so I would trade him while he still is considered to have upside. Plus we have a lot of guys like him in the system.
@ThrSage I just dont see how we have 3.5 to spend on one player without Richards leaving. There are so many needs and after signing all 4 rfa's we are only going to have about 1 million left in cap space.... Zuccs should not be coming back.
We have a lot of depth in 2nd-3rd line players throughout the organization so we need a big time scorer. I have thought Sather might package a few from the St. Croix, Miller, Jean, Fast, Nieves, Nicholls, group for a high pick or big time scorer currently in the league, so u might be right.
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG cap hell... and we don't even have that much talent. Look at Pitt, they have more cap space than us and 5 times the talent on their roster...
