TSN is reporting that the Rangers have decided against using their final compliance buyout on Brad Richards this season.
...while I'm not shocked by the decision, all I know is they better cover him in bubble wrap this year to prevent any injury that would make him ineligible for compliance buyout next offseason. Although, Richards has only played less than 72 games once in his career so I doubt anything bad will happen, right?...
...putting the injury concerns aside, I'm fully prepared for a very motivated Richards to bounce back big time this season. Hey, maybe he'll have such a good season the Rangers could trade him away at the deadline.
This should upset some of you, but why in the hell would we sign Zuc given our cap situation? With the kids (Krieder and maybe Miller) and all this talk about being soft, why would we sign a completely undersized player with a big heart but little skill and nearly zero finishing prowess? Ritchie, Nash, Cally, HAgs, Step, Krieder, Brassard..Without Zuc, thats 7 forwards for the top 6.. which TWO do you remove to make room for this guy? I love his heart, but we need every penny and cannot afford a shootout specialist right now.
The fact is this move pulled us out of 5 teams that could contend for a cup. I'm not saying just richy, but the players we could have potentially gotten could have put us in there. Yes a team outside the top 5 can get hot and take it all. But right now I put the 5 contenders for next year as Chicago, Boston, Pittsburgh, LA, and Detroit. There are other solid teams (Ottawa will be tough now that they are healthy, Toronto, San Jose, Vancouver, and yes the NYI depending on who they get as a goalie) but these are my top 5 going into next year, depending on moves they end up making. I wouldn't put the rangers in the top 10 in the league, and the only reason I would put them in the top 15 right now is because of Hank. If bob stays in Columbus that team has a brighter future than us especially with 3 first round draft picks in the deepest draft...
Oh damn - after a long hard day did I really need to come home to this shit? Well despite the likelihood that failing an intelligence test is a prerequisite for becoming a GM here the thinking must be that he still has some good hockey in him and his experience will help us in the playoffs, if we even get there. Sorry to break this to the short sighted SOBs in our front office but Richey is not a great player and never has been but he has a great player's contract and he's soft. We lost to the Bruins because we're soft! Well! - for all you DelZotto haters out there that probably means he's gone, along with his cap space for some cheap role players being that you can't even get to the playoffs when practically everyone on your team is soft. For gods sake 2 of our smallest players do most of the hitting around here. I wonder what future star we will not sign this year because we failed to clear up enough cap space. I wonder what top UFA we will miss out on, this after trading away all our top draft picks in the richest market in years. Slats must have a plan. That really fucking scares me!
This Hank worry has to end as well. Losing good players doesn't sink a team for years. Long contracts to underperforming players is what sinks a team for years. Fill the pipeline with youth, plug in low investment, high return gambles in free agency, and NEVER think that ANY of your stars are worth the salary of two players unless you get those once in a generation players like Crosby, Gretzky, or Ovechkin. News flash....Hank ain't that. YES...he MAY be the best goalie out there, but not by much. Plus....a whole bunch of teams seemed to have found ways to win the up without Hank, so there is always that....haha
Richards? Betting on a player the wrong side of thirty to make a turnaround in a game that every years demands more size, speed and toughness is just silly.
Damn....how many players on the Rangers roster can you count who could've actually even played with the boys on the Bruins and Hawks during that series?
Sure, keep Richards. No one here remembers the tragic years with Mike Rogers, Mark Pavelich and the rest of the Smurfs. It was horrible. We were beaten up every game....just like we were this year.....and likely will be again next year.
Okay, I'm joining the Richards defense force--
Here's the deal. He's probably getting bought out at the end of next season anyhow. Regardless of this, he likely just had a slump last season. Despite slumping, he still had decent numbers. Unfortunately, he still disappeared in the playoffs, but so did other key players (Nash, Callahan). So it's likely that he'll be prepared for this season, skating early before the season and actually getting to have a training camp with AV.
In addition to that Not Being So Bad Now That I think About It, we have things to look forward to in Stepan after his breakout year, Brassard busting out, Moore being a solid D-line addition, and maybe, just maybe, MDZ will finally come through. Oh, and we have the best goaltender in the world. Not all bad.
lot of complaining going on lol; I wanted Richards bought out purely from a financial standpoint, but now that it's not happening, we just gotta hope that AV can get him going/pray he doesnt get hurt
Contrary to popular belief, the world will not end if a) Brad Richards does not improve from last year, b) Brad Richards has a great year and then starts to decline, c) Brad Richards retires before his contract is up. There's not a person on this planet, except maybe that "call me now" Jamaican psychic, who knows what is going to happen 1 month, or 6 months or 6 years from now. So let's all stop acting like this is the worst possible thing that Sather could have done. There are and always will be many other options, and no matter what happens this move will not sink the Rangers. And BTW, if Richards puts up 70+ points this year, will everyone who is bashing him as washed up stand up, or is it going to take him doing it for 10 more years before you eat crow? I for one don't have a problem with this move, given that he can still be bought out next summer if he does not improve, especially since there was no real attractive options for that money this year (Lecavalier will have the same $$ amount for less years, Bickell is going back to Chicago at a discount, Horton has 1 shoulder, etc.).
Amazingly stupid. The Pats don't care if a guys is a "caliber" guy if his contract makes no sense for them. They just make the move - all business. (crap....calling a Pats guy a "caliber" guy has a whole new meaning now, doesn't it?)
Anyway, this league has passed Richards by. Can you even imagine him on the ice for any of that Bruins/B-Hawks series??? Maybe, just maybe he will benefit from the long and less intense season, but when that rink starts to shrink and the intensity grows he will be invisible. In....vi....si....ble!!!!
This shows me once again that despite all of the money, sports teams are largely run by the same inept individuals that plague the rest of our society.
Good job Sather (clap, clap) you should thank the Lord that ice hockey is entertaining and commands the attention of consumers, otherwise you would be pushing grocery carts you dolt. (not that there is anything wrong with pushing carts)
Well, He's either going to...
Bust his ass knowing a buy out is definitely in his future, and is kept. (Please no)
Bust his ass knowing a buy out is definitely in his future, under-achieves and is bought out. (Yes please)
Bust his ass knowing a buy out is definitely in his future, to up his value then is traded.(Doubtful)
Bust his ass knowing a buy out is definitely in his future, and gets hurt doing it. (Please no)
So either way he is going to bust his ass this year or am I missing something....Even though I don't agree with keeping him, he will at least bust his and is then hopefully bought out anyways, for maybe a better UFA next year....??
OK, I don't think this was the right move, but I'm going to try to make the best of it. I think we can move Pyatt and Asham for a 3rd and 7th round pick respectively, saving $2.5M. If we can resign Step, Mac, Hags and Zuke for a total of about $12-13M, we should have enough left to re-sign Clowe for about $3-3.5 and still have a little breathing room under the cap to bring in a 7th D or 13th F.
Old Chicklet Tooth is back for another lazy lap on the pond?! This is a terrible move. Brad's gonna get laid out and were all gonna pay a heavy price. Sather's gotta put the pipe down, this is ridiculous but Ranger typical. Smh.
somehow I really hope this yankees team and the Jets are not more entertaining to watch... but I am starting to get very nervous
I've said it since they got eliminated, they need to look at Bickell, Horton, Clarkson and/or Clowe. We could have had two of those players, now they won't even be able to sign one. Big bodies and toughness creates space for skill. Skill and experience alone does not win championships! Look at the early 2000s.
This offseason, We had a great opportunity to return to the grit and snarl of 2012. Slats pissed on that chance today to cover his own ass. Had he bought out richards it would have been an admission of the fact that he didn't build a cup worthy team and it wasn't all torts fault. But nooooo this team as is, is totally a cup contender.....
Anyone who believes that is lying to themselves.
@jmacwilli I have to say, this is a breath of fresh air. Thats what i keep saying. We pay these guys a TON of money and keep bringing in 30 something year old guys or older. Maybe we should sign Jagr again right? lol
@tygalpin Richey is a good player who will probably bounce back - that's not the issue here. The issue is his inflated contract. Yeah MDZ will probably come through next year alright, only on another team since we now have to bite off some cap space somewhere, or guess what - we may not sign either Stephan, Hags or McD or whoever else we need in out RFA corps - this move just doesn't add up. Someone has to go. So either let a future hall of famer go (which the Rangers are famous for) or trade other players for cheap role players, with MDZ being the most likely candidate being that we're currently the softest team in the league, adding to the fact that they may not be able to sign Clowe now. Buying Richey out seemed like such an obvious solution to plugging the holes we need to be a legit front runner next year. Yeah - I'm no expert here - God I hope there's something I'm missing.
@tygalpin if the Rangers are under 500 before the deadline... it is going to be armageddon day. They better start fast under a new coach with a new system because the Rangers are not letting Hank walk for nothing... and if they do then the Rangers are truly sunk for the next 10 years...
@gravey94 Thanks for your post - I think I need someone to be a voice of reason, and you're probably right but damn, this is a good player with a great player's contract. In the cap era it makes no sense to me. I'm cringing thinking about the possibilities we will miss out on now for next season (and no, LeCav was never on my wish list) - anyway I retorted my views on this above - I'm sure I'll re-read it tomorrow and say "Adam, you've posted yet another knee jerk reaction on this blog" lol
Can this team, as is, beat Pitt, Boston,Tor or even Ott in a seven game series? It's not about the player, it's about the $$$$$$$$. That 7 mill could have done a lot towards making this team bigger and meaner. We will now have one of the smallest top 6 in the nhl. But it's ok, Richards is fast enough to make up for it! Come on guys! Didn't you guys see Lucic kick the shit out of Nash and Stralman, Hank get run by every forward on the hockey gods green earth. This team was so soft!!!!!!!! They need size and snarl, not a 33 yr old center who might have a 70 point season. Do you think rich can out muscle any player on the bruins for the puck????? Come on!
@gravey94 It's not about the possibility of a less than disastrous, or (fingers crossed) even a decent outcome. It is and has always been entirely about playing the odds. And when viewed in that light (as it should've been) this was a simple decision.
Yes, you can bet the title of your house on on a roulette wheel and win, but it doesn't change the fact that it was a terrible decision to take that gamble.
@jmacwilli Was it you who posted that very clever comment yesterday about the short-sightedness of humans (which seems amped up when it comes to hockey people) "Fucking stupid animals" my favorite quote here so far. I'm starting to believe that our entire front office has the collective IQ of an Everything Bagel.
Josh do you think trading Hank is really an option? I don't see it or want it to happen. But people keep talking about it. Just want the opinion of somebody with strong hockey IQ so thought I'd ask you.
@cb1 In what dream land do you think we will get a 3rd rounder for Pyatt?
@cb1 That still doesn't solve the fact that we are the softest team in the league and are going no where if we don't address that. I'm sure MDZ would go along with a few others to get some needed snarl around here
@craig_atherton keep Richey a decent player, then move your top goalie for the cap room. Only to a Rangers GM would that make sense
I know u wanted him bought out but it will be fine. He will have a bounce back year. Remember Messier was 34 when he won his last Cup. Jagr was his age when he had his big year for us. I know Richards is not Messier or even Jagr but he is one of the premier centers of the last 10 years. He will be motivated to have a big year & he will be in great shape. Look on the bright side if he is has a good year we can contend for the Cup.
Also as for Lindbergh this doesn't change anything. It was unrealistic to think he would come in here & be a top-2 Center. It will take him a year to develop. If he is that good his talent will shine thru & he will get ice time. Keep ur chin up it's really not that bad.
@GiveGartneraCup fucking idiot! I'm sure that's exactly the reason, that or the almighty dollar. Maybe Slats' dominatrix can beat some sense into him before the 4th - but no, his golden ass is totally worth more than the entire team and it's millions of fans.
@GiveGartneraCup We need a REAL old fashioned Goon. A guy who will make you fear life if you touch one of our finesse players.
@GiveGartneraCup bigger and meaner has never been specific criteria on this team
@GiveGartneraCup Maybe Glen is trying to build a "Chicago" team. :-). But really, we are more like Hawks than the Bruins. I'd really like them to have a 6'4+ nasty guy with Nash and Richards/whomever. Nash would have so much more open space to do his thing. If we have the rights to Clowe, and can afford him, throw him on that line. You saw how Bickell clogged up Charra... I think I was talking to you about this in another post but I'm definitely on the same page as you in regards to what the Rangers need.
@Rangers3024 I wouldn't say I have a strong hockey IQ lol. I just break everything down as much as I can and post it...Thanks though... As for Lundqvist... I don't know, I cant see him in another uniform. I can only hope Slather has something up his sleeve for next year to entice Henrik to stick around. Its hard to come around a stud goalie, and if we want a cup we need him because our offense isn't going to do it for us.
@ThrSage My concern with this decision is that we are the softest team in the league just about. Richey is a good but soft player but his numbers are about average for a 1st line center and is more often a minus player than not. He's lost some quickness now which, even if he gets his game back is hard to make up at 33. If he was bought out his production could be absorbed by other players but without that cap room to bring in the toughness needed to contend for a cup we will have to give up something else now - or simply be mediocre again next year. Will it be an RFA/ perhaps Stephan or McD? Probably not so trades will be needed (which will probably delight MDZ haters). Then if we do sign our key players we have little elbow room to bring in a good UFA - not the end of the world and I am not saying you are wrong but we have holes that need plugging up here - buying Richey's contract which is inflated anyway given his productivity would have seemed to have been the best way to do that.
@ThrSage he should have been the 3rd line center this year... not wasting away in the AHL.
@ThrSage stop making sense, you'll only make him more angry
@GiveGartneraCup @PsychJukebox - now their heavy hitters are Cally and Zucc ???? and 6;7" Boyle will lumber around and watch his smaller team mates get beat up hoping for a good bounce
Did you not watch the team two years ago?!?!? That season they could bang with anyone! Dubi, prust, rupper, even Bickel were fearless and mean! That's what they are missing!
@josh930@Betweentheworlds@GiveGartneraCupMaybe Josh, but keeping Richey
kinda seals that deal. there's never any guarantees and I'm a realist. I
knew they did not have what they needed to win this year, which made me
kinda unpopular here but with smart maneuvering they could have had what it takes
next year. If Slats is waiting to build a cup for the following year then he's a fucking idiot. Whomever he's coveting when he buys out Richey may not be available, or may sign with someone else and there are no guarantees that any of these prospects will ever be ready or amount to anything. One could get a severe career ending concussion, another might never develop. Our best prospect in years died at age 20 (forgot his name) - point is you can't think like that in hockey with all it's variables. You got to pull the trigger now. We need to get tough now so that what skill we do have can have room to score and that our assets can be protected instead of mowed down every goddam shift without retaliation. and if these professionals need a whole freakin year to learn a new system then they all need to recondition in Hartford. Pre-season and 20 games max.
Josh, with all do respect, if they are going to buy him out anyways, what's the incentive in waiting? Why not make a run this year and next? There's going to be so many players available this off season due to the lowered cap via trade, buyout or ufa. I really think this was the year to pull the trigger on the market even if its not their year to win the cup.
You and every other fan of every team want to win the cup THISyear. But the guys we need to step up are not ready for a cup run this year especially with the Richards move and a new system. Everyone will know the system next year, Kreider will hopefully be the stud everyone thinks hes gunna be and I think we will have the right mix of young talent and veteran guys, Richards will be bought out and toughness will be added. I definitively see 2 solid scoring lines next year. This coming up year will be a primer for a run for the cup. Like I said, I'm not sure whose on the market next year but hopefully glenn has a plan to free up cap space and get some big boys on the team..
@josh930 @GiveGartneraCup Maybe Josh, but we are now the softest team in the league - we can't even put a pimple on Chicago's ass with what we have here now. richey's cap space could have meant getting some snarl back on Broadway. Now either we don't sign an RFA (like Stephan, Hags or McD), trade MDZ for cheap grit (pretty much a done deal now I would think), trade other players or try to compete in the toughest league in the world with a team where your hardest hitters stand 5'7" and 5'9" - which basically means we don't make the playoffs. yeah we can buy him out next off season and build a tougher core but I kinda want to win the cup this year
@GiveGartneraCup Rich needs to go no matter what next year. Too much money tied up into somebody who's going to break down sooner than later. He's bought out next year I think no matter if he puts up 70pts or not. So we will get his money and a year he's going bust his ass in to stay in NY. Stepan or Bassard will be ready to step into the top line with Nash. Hags, Kreider, Miller and Lindberg will be a year older and wiser. Hank will still be in his prime. Everyone will know the system... So I think Sather knows next year is the year and we get the grit next year. I'm unsure who is available next year but thats what I'm hoping for
I don't know if they can afford any ONE of those guys now. Had they bought out rich they could have brought in two!!!!! Maybe just MAYBE Glen already knows what it'll take to keep McD, Step, and Hags and he thinks they'll have more cap space left then we all anticipate?????? God I hope so. I would not be against keepin Rich if they added some grit and size to this roster. I only wanted Rich's money to fill that gaping hole!
I can't see him in another uniform either, as for the offense I don't even wanna talk about it right now lol
@Rangers3024 Maybe Hank and AV will get in the Sedins ears to get them over here.... I know they are as soft as melted butter, but dam they just seem to know where each other are a put up some points.... Either way it will be interesting.....
@Rangers3024 But either way. Richards needs to be bought out. Like I said, hes gunna bust his ass to stay in NY and glen might just want to get that out of him for 1yr(Dirty), then buy him out but its business.
