Larry Brooks at the New York Post reports that the Rangers have given the Vancouver Canucks the permission to speak with assistant coach Mike Sullivan.
John Tortorella was officially named as head coach of the Canucks yesterday and is expected to ask Sullivan to join his staff as he was in Tampa and with the Rangers.
....Hallelujah!!!!! I was starting to get worried Sullivan was going to be retained.
...and in related news, the Sedin twins just magically became inept on the power play.
I have never understood why the NHL will not allow teams like the Rangers to buy cap space from small markets. If Nashville is only spending 50-m on a 60-m cap then its a win win if the Rangers buy 10-m in space from them. The Rangers can get the players they wanyt & Nashville can get more money for their franchise. Isn't that the whole point of Revenue sharing? To make small markets healthier? Then again that would take a commissioner w-vision & smarts unfortunatly we have Bettman.
On another note, the NYI are one team that is very interested in Bryzgalov. I think if he goes there he brings some of that Phoenix magic, and that team could be very dangerous...
I have been hearing that the NYI want to trade Dipietro to a team that can afford to buy him out. Obviously if they do so they would have to give a King's ransom along with Rick because of how much money he is owed...
Any chance the Rangers would be into this for Grabner, Griffin Reinhart (an absolute stud defensman thats 19 years old), and a first round pick. Obviously Sather would have to explain why he is shelling out a ton of money for Rick Dipietro though.
Just an interesting thought.
Tooling around Canucks blogs, read this from a Torts' interview
He emphasized the pride he took in "(changing) the landscape" in New York "from a free-agent haven, to building a team with our young kids."
for all of the Torts' bashing, you have to give him that. It hasn't been often that a coach will leave a team and be percieved (by me at least) as having left the team and the culture better off from when he had started.
2 separate & totally unrelated notes:
1) Anisimov signed a new deal for a $3.2M cap hit, Dubinsky's is $4.2M. That's nearly all of Nash's hit. Nice job Sather!
2) It looks like Boston will not be re-signing Andrew Ference. Solid veteran (34 yrs old) D, probably around $2.5M. Any takers? Looks like he would be a solid 2nd/3rd pair guy, but not much offense.
@Josh6 : Apparently this is technically not possible under the CBA. Tampa Bay just bought out LeCalvalier after an attempt to trade him and an "asset" to Toronto where they would buy him out allowing Tampa to resign him. The NHL stepped in and warned them that this would be seen as trying to get around the Salary Cap.
and also now you are allowed to pay for additional salary cap for another team, or something to that tune... Maybe the Isles help us out there too. Listen Dolan has a ton of money, and these would be HUGE pieces for our team. Reinhart also makes DZ gone. He is 6'4" with a cannon from the point... and he is only 19!!!
@AnnoyingJoe Well, one could say it was circumstance too, cause the NYR didn't start rebuilding young until pre 2004 lockout. Most of these guys weren't ready to play NHL level under Renney, and so happened to mature in time for Torts. I will give credit to Torts that he did help some of these young guys grow and develop. I actually think Torts is really good with the young guys, cause they're eager and much more willing to buy into his philosophies than a harden veteran.
@AnnoyingJoe I will always give him credit for that.
I always pretty much liked Torts, even though some suspicions have been confirmed in the aftermath of his tenure, but this is one of the best points, Joe. You gotta give him that. Torts probly made Sather better.
@ThrSage if, however, their PP improves to like, say, anywhere between 12th and 15th in the league, then it will be a story.
@gravey94 Thought of Ference for The Rangers when I read that.
@gravey94 also unrelated..... Michal Slow-zsival also won the stanley cup....ugh.
@gravey94 no thank you. We have depth on defense, we need some offensive talent with the money we have left.
@Josh6 Is that true? I thought they said no to that?
@Josh6 Dolan does not own the Rangers. Cablevision does. He is the CEO of the company & has voting control, however he almost lost his job a few times due to shareholder revolt. You know what changed it? The Rangers started making tons of money due to the Cap, therfore earnings per share went up. . What people on this blog & in general don't get is his first responsibility is to create SHAREHOLDER VALUE not win Cups or NBA Championships, despite his PR flacks stating his Number-1 priority is to win. Its not. His large Institutional shareholders want him to make money not win. Thats the way it works, so he doesn't have endless amounts of money to spend, cause its NOT HIS MONEY ITS THE SHAREHOLDERS!!!! He may want to but he can't. So even if he wanted to spend 30-50-m to buy the Isles probs he can't. Unless spending that money generates more profits. Though Thats unlikelyPay Thats why you may see Richards back for another year. Its easy to say buy him out cause Dolan has the money but in the real world ts a tough decision to eat 30-m of shareholder money. He may get bought out but he may not.
@Josh6 Sorry to post on post, but isn't Dipietro grandfathered with the policy of burying him in the AHL and his salary not counting against the cap anyhow?
@Josh6 Interesting Josh. I wonder if the NHL would approve the trade knowing that whatever team Dipietro went to would be using an amnesty buyout on him.
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG I hear ya. Not sure it makes sense either unless Staal is a no go or someone else goes. Ference is not a depth guy. I think MDZ, Moore, and Stralman will give us good offense on all 3 pairs and I still think McDonagh has more to give in that respect.
@ThrSage @Josh6 I really don't believe that every decision Dolan makes regarding both the knicks n rangers is hinged on what will happen w/ the shareholders. Look at some of the bad contracts over the last decade that SAther signed on Dolan's watch. The guy showed up to testify in court for Issaiah's sexual harassment case in sweatpants n dismissed the charges as office foolishness. He fired the D'Antony cuz Melo wanted him gone. Like you said, his #1 priority is the value of both teams to increase n generate profits. But don't think he's sweating what his board is thinking. Plus it may be a bitter pill to swallow, but what is worse: having to buy out a $30 million contract or continuing to pay the player to be so god awful that he rides the bench. If you cut your losses (richards) you end up w/ more cap room to actually pick up some players to make this team a winner. A winning team generates more viewers n higher ticket sales which = high shareholder value!
@Josh6 we already used one on Redden
@Betweentheworlds @Josh6 @gravey94 If McIlrath can further improve his skating, he could be the answer you're looking for. Obviously, big, strong, nasty, and he actually has a really good shot from the point. He just has to get a bit faster (not talking north/south, but laterally and quick first step). Some say he needs to improve his positioning, but that will come if he can get faster.
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG I wish, but you cannot learn Leetch's vision and talent. I love McD, and he's going to be a great defensemen, but he will not reach Leetch's level imho. I hope he proves me wrong.
This is the unrestricted free agent that we need to sign!
@Betweentheworlds @gravey94 @GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG MDZs a lost cause. He's going to do what he has done the past two years: put up decent #'s in the regular season thanks, in large part, to playing in front of the best Goalie in the world and then turtle in the playoffs. Still wish they could move him.
@gravey94 @GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG Yes, these guys all have offense in them. Staal was starting to show that as well before he went down. McD has some O - and even the stay at home robo-Dman G can pitch in. If someone could screw MDZ's head on straight he could be a good offensive player for us from the blue line.
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG yeah. maybe with this new coach they will work on accuracy drills. im sick of hearing sam say "and he shoots...wide..."
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG Ference was injured during the series, correct? I don't even remember him out there. What kind of game does he play? We need someone gritty and hard-hitting a la Girardi 3 years ago.
