As of this afternoon, Brad Richards has not been contacted by the Rangers regarding a possible buyout. Larry Brooks at the New York Post says one of the reasons could be that the Blueshirts are waiting to see the pool of players that are being bought out by other teams...
"There is a sense that the Rangers would prefer not to exercise the buyout but want to retain the option in case a player becomes unexpectedly available to them leading up to July 4 and the club would thus need to free up Richards’ cap space in order to add him."
Some of the players whose team have announced they will be bought out are Vinny Lecavalier, Danny Briere and Rostislav Olesz.
...this is actually a very smart strategy by Sather. If he can't find a suitable replacement for Richards, I think they end up keeping him. However, with names like Lecavalier and Briere already out there it's probably more likely he could be on his way out.
...again, while I'm leaning towards wanting Richards bought out this season, it has everything to with his contract and the risk of injury not allowing the Rangers to amnesty him next season. It has nothing to do with his performance last season as I am confident he will come back this year motivated to prove his detractors wrong.
If they don't buy Richey out my guess is that keeping him somehow benefits the suits bottom lines because clearly they could build a better team without him (with his cap space vacant) then with him. Nothing against Richey - I too think he has some good hockey left, it's just a ridiculous contract. If they do buy him out and can get Vinny on the cheap then why not but I'd rather see them use their space to make the team stronger and meaner - with a solid D core and the king in our corner we have enough talent to win, but we do not have enough toughness.
I'm sick of Sather. He needs to go.Poor drafts,wrong coaching decision.Will the great one please just buy this team and let Dolan go play guitar somewhere!
Buy out brad bring on vinny. PP improves and we become a much better team instantly. And less of a cap hit to boot.
Winning organizations don't make decisions based on fear. Especially on fear of a guy getting hurt. I guarantee you that is not a factor in Sathers thinking. His thinking on Richards is based on whether he gives them a chance at the Cup next year. Sather knows this is his last "window" to win a Cup as GM. He is 70. Time is running out on him. If he doesn't win a Cup in the next 2-3 years this core is done & they ahve to rebuild. Thats why I always thought he wants to bring Richards back. He thinks if he regains his form he can lead them to a Cup next year. Thats the way Slats thinks. He is a cocky guy. He thinks the Rangers are close & if he thinks there is no one better then Richards out there...expect him back.
You're giving Sather way too much credit. As you and many others have already noted, this is the only issue, "...again, while I'm leaning towards wanting Richards bought out this season, it has everything to with his contract and the risk of injury not allowing the Rangers to amnesty him next season."This is the NY Rangers we're talking about, basically a jinxed franchise that is milking one Cup win in what seems like a million years. Enough said. Move him now.
I've heard that if Richards is bought out, Steven Weiss could be his replacement. Anybody have any thoughts on that? I think he has good skill but seems to be injury prone.
Do not agree on Briere for sure; oft-injured and 35 now and goal output has declined. Vinny, maybe if I had to choose between the two but not to amnesty Richards because Sather is waiting on players of that ilk, not a smart move. We'll see; Sather usually comes up smelling like roses AFTER he fixes one of his bonehead deals!!!
I still think guys like Lecavalier and Briere still have a lot to offer if willing to accept 2-3 year deal.

Jesus, Montreal is using their buyout on Kaberle? Teams are really banking on Next years cap going way up. I mean, that only leaves them 6 million this year. If the cap doesn't go up next year, they'll have 13 slots to fill with very little money.
SATHER! PLEASE DON'T BE STUPID!!!!!
hard using smart move and Sather in the same sentence!!! Most of the buy-outs are going to be aging, oft-injured, past their prime, salary dumps!! How smart is it waiting around for someone like that?
Pens just signed Kunitz to a 3 year extension at 3.85 million per year... Some how they can fit all these guys in under the cap, but we struggle to fit under the cap with less than half the talent... I just dont get it...
I'm sure that wade Redden was also motivated in his second year with the Rangers and look how it worked out. I'll say buy him out and free up a lot of cap space.
Hawks aren't going to buyout Hossa. Only leaves 6 million in cap space. Cough Cough... BICKELL!!!!!!
if AV is going to revamp and open up the offense i think you have to take Lecavalier over Richards... he's bigger and i think he's got more to offer. but only if they can get him dirt cheap.
@ThrSage Right as usual Thr - though my thinking (which may be why I'm not the GM lol) is if we buy him out now we open up cap space to bring in more toughness which is a more pressing need to win the cup then Richey's 25 goals and 70 pts. ( IF he regains his form)
@ThrSage Actually I don't think it would be fear at all. It is just balancing the potential positives and negatives. I think the potential negatives of keeping Richards on the team far outweigh any positives he could bring in one year. If you agree that he will be bought out at the end of next season anyway, then you have to consider his value for one season vs the potential to be cap strung for 6 years after that and the potential to miss out on some signings this off season. Especially since Weiss, Briere, and Lecavalier will all be free agents now, you have some options to sign this year, and with the young centers we have there is a little bit if depth.
@ThrSage You speak the truth and it just hurts to read that....
@Rangers3024 ewww. I have heard some that like him, but for me my response should say it all.
@Josh6This ia a must read on a Canucks fan living in Vancouver who purchased Panthers season tickets: http://www.cavemag.com/my-year-as-a-florida-panthers-season-ticket-holder/
@GiveGartneraCup Montreal is after Lecavlier... They can have him.... Hes got 2-3 yrs left in him..
@Josh6 I think we have the potential for talent, just we need size to clog up some space so the talent can be utilized....
@scrangersfan what's scary is that Redden didn't mesh with Tort's philosophy, which didn't help. What's Richie's excuse?
@GiveGartneraCup I do have to say, for a big guy, Bickell has some hands, plus the ability to clog up Charra.... Nash would have a field day with him on the team
@SGrumet I don't think he's coming dirt cheap.
@Rangers3024 I'm not savvy in that part of the game but it sounds reasonable under the buy-out circumstances - if we could grab him for that it would still give us some elbow room to get tougher while adding a good offensive weapon.
Yea I think that it's definitely a reasonable price, and we could still add a guy like Bryan Bickell. I can't even describe how much I would love to have Bickell on the Rangers.
@Rangers3024 yea Stepan, Brassard, Lindberg, and Boyle should be our centers. Unless we find a way to get Lecavlier in which case Lidberg may have to wait a little bit or might start out on the wing....
@Rangers3024 talk about a line that would get completely out muscled and worn down...
Yea, the fans are talking about trading Gionta, or Deharnes... Or how ever you spell it but they are after size as well and want to unload the undersized players
