I was a huge advocate of the Rangers going after Mark Streit when he was a UFA back in 2008. Unfortunately, Glen Sather didn't confer with me and decided to sign Wade Redden for 6-years, $39 million instead, while Streit ended up going to the Islanders for 5-years, $20.5 million. The rest is horrific history for the Rangers.
Now that the 35-year old Streit has rejected the Islanders best offer of 3 years, $4.75 million per and will be headed to free agency again, Rangers fans have already begun dreaming about the former Islanders captain quarterbacking the Rangers dormant power play.
Arthur Staple at Newsday says that Streit, who has 141 career power play points, could command a 4-year deal averaging $6 million per.
...so after passing on Streit for cheap in his prime, we want Sather to overpay him as he enters the twilight of his career? Makes sense.
...would Streit upgrade the Rangers power play? Absolutely, but so could I, so that's not saying much. I know a Richards buyout would open up additional cap space to sign him, but this has pre-lockout Sather signing written all over it.
...you also have to remember that the Rangers would be signing Streit to an over 35 contract, meaning even if he decided to retire or was put on LTIR he would count fully against the cap.
...bottom line, no thanks. A better option could be Ian White, who found himself in Mike Babcock's doghouse in Detroit this past season and could be had for cheap. The 29-year old White had 10 power play points during 2011-12 season and just finished a contract worth $2.875 million per.
No thanks. Ian White is a better answer. But they absolutely should look at Bryan Bickell 6'4" 225 lb 26 yr old stud...instead of Clowe.
Please! No more signing of players that aer in the twilite of their cariers. We need to say young and develop the talanted young prostects we have in the system. Havent we've been burned enough with free agent signings?
Yes we need a dman who can actually shoot hard and QB a PP but no thanks - that would be a losing proposition given age and the cap. Thanks for reminding me how horrible our free agent choices have been under Slats - not all of them and he's done great things with the trades but too many disasters
Is Wade Redden available? No way in hell I would sign Streit for any more than 2 years @ $3M per. So I guess that pretty much guarantees that Sather will sign him for 6 @ 6!
ONLY ONLY ONLY for 2 years. NO more. We need a guy like him just for the short term. Would take him only for short period, nothing more.
Personally I dont think this team needs to add an older defensemen. I think our D-corps are looking pretty good now and into the future. As for the power play I think that Moore could step into that role nicely and I also think that under a new coach McDonagh will be allowed to play a more offensive game and get some powerplay time. On a related note I've seen it mentioned that Rangers could possibly trade Del Zotto now that we have Moore. What are the odds that this actually happens and if so what type of return can we expect?
"...so after passing on Streit for cheap in his prime, we want Sather to overpay him as he enters the twilight of his career? Makes sense."
Is that not how we do things?
Also, I would definitely be an upgrade on the point. I have a harder shot than Richards and better knees. Guy was putrid this year, they should have kept miller, and banished him to the ahl
Can we open up this convo? I realize the Rangers need a PP Quarterback. Feels like we've sung the same song for years now. But, I also think they need size, grit and depth up front. Couple options that will be out there: Clowe, Clarkson, Bryan Bickell (Chicago). Anyone else interested in these guys? Could also see a deal for Boyle in SJ being on the table since the Sharks only have 15 players signed for next season and 9 million dollars of cap space. What does everyone think? Everyone's a risk, but who do we like? Please ignore the fact that we hate Clarkson when he has a Devils jersey on because you all know you'd love him if he was in Blue....
Forget Streit. Said it in another thread and I'll say it again here: Andrew Ference. 34 years old, coming off of a modest salary of 2.25/yr. Guy is a solid D man, stand up for his teammates kind of guy, and for 5'11, 195 lbs, throws the body a lot better than most. Not the PP QB we need, but could be a solid, affordable 2-3 year deal if management feels that McIllrath isn't ready for the big show yet.
@pronasty71 I would prefer Gonchar to Streit
@Zelrio Good point. Expect him to be signed 5 minutes into free agency. lol
@Josh6 it is the dame position
@Josh6 Horton would be nice. I think Riberio is just another skilled center. We have two. We need a big man down the middle. But, is Horton even a Center? He's listed as a RW on Capgeek and a Center on hockeydb. I remember him lining up in both places during the series.
@GiveGartneraCup I like Bickell. I didn't watch the Hawks a lot this season, but what little I saw, it seemed like Bickell was either scoring or making something happen.
Clarkson wants way to much, 5 plus a year. Also think this half season and last season were like boyles 20 goal season. He is not a 30 goal scorer and he will come back down to earth. I wouldn't give his type of player any more than 3 million a year, and he is asking for almost double that. I will pass
@MutantCity That's only because I played goalie in high school instead of the point on the power play. :p
He plays all 3 forward positions, and is very good on face offs. He is looking for 4-5 a year, and with the bruins being in a worse cap situation then us, he is going to hit free agency
I like Bickel also but at the right price. 2.5 to 3.00 mil per for 2 years.
Sick of long term contracts.Players lose incentive after signing big long term contracts.
@Josh6 Where did you see that he was asking for that much? Can you share the article? I'd love to check it out.
@Josh6 Also has 2 concussions in the last 7 months. Oyyy
@Josh6 Holy crap. Horton has 7 goals and 10 assists this playoffs!
@Josh6 Wow. He sounds awesome then. I still think they need a hulking winger as well. I'd love Clowe AND Bickell. If Clarkson comes down off that ridiculous number I'd be interested as well. I think this off season is a huge question mark with the Cap going down by so much. No one knows what anyone is worth.
@Josh6 Ya, that is too much. Toronto is already a big fucking team. They are going to be tough to play against next year. Wish someone would say that about the Rangers again.
Yea when I get back home. Toronto is the favorite, and he wants minimum 5 million a year, so the devils are letting him walk
