As I posted Sunday, Glen Sather really needs to add a little pep to his step if he doesn't want another top head coaching candidate to sign elsewhere.
According to Darren Dreger at TSN, after his interview with the Rangers yesterday, Alaine Vigneault is expected to re-connect with the Dallas Stars in the next few days. The former Canucks head coach is considered a top choice of both the Rangers and Dallas.
Larry Brooks at the New York Post adds that Vigneault not only has a long personal relationship with recently hired Stars GM Jim Nill, but is not likely to take a chance on being left out by waiting on Sather who has been known to take his time with head coaching hires.
Although, Josh Rimer at Next Sport Star says that with Dan Bylsma inking a two-year extension with the Penguins to expect the Rangers to make a decision on their head coach very soon.
While Vigneault has been the only candidate interviewed at this point, Andrew Gross at the Bergen Record reports that the Rangers are also expected to speak with Lindy Ruff.
Finally, on Mark Messier's candidacy, Brooks adds he is at the Rangers organizational meetings in his capacity as a special assistant to Sather but is recusing himself from discussions with candidates. No word on whether "The Captain" has been formally interviewed.
...so basically at this point, with no one other than Vigneault being interviewed, I can't see that the next head coach will be anyone but him. Which is why if Sather doesn't make a move before Dallas does, the Rangers are back at square one.
...very surprised with how quite it's been on the Messier front. I assumed we'd hear about him at least being interviewed this week. Unless of course Sather doesn't feel he needs to interview his own special assistant.
...while Kings assistant Stevens and former Lightning coach Boucher have been linked to the Rangers it doesn't seem, at this point, that they are serious contenders for the position.
I know it got deflected, but fucking Michael Rosival winning the game for the Hawks.... you literally could not write this shit if you tried... I swear.
No mention of Boucher? Could be Mess, or could be a more experienced coach with Mess as asst. for 2 years of "training" for head coach job.
remember this pic?
pierre mcguire can say like, 90 words on one breathe (15 of them useful) and using one flat tone.
Hey who would have thought Michael Rosival would play for a cup before Hank.... CRAZY.... Not to mention Wade Redden as well...
I refuse to show favor to any candidate, so when shit hits the fan I can say "I never really wanted him in there anyway".
Wait I thought this was cnn.com
Watching this just makes me sad.... CAN WE JUST PLAY FOR THE CUP ALREADY!!! Jesus christ.... ITS A JOKE 20 YEARS NOW...
I think Sather's slow handling of new head coaching process is because he's made his mind to go with Mess. Not my choice, but just seems to be rolling that way
I have been watching the Rangers lose for 39 of the 40 years I have followed them. It's not as if when they make Messier the coach that they will be tinkering with a successful model. Why all the handwringing? Are you worried that Messier can't match the same level of incompetence? Go ahead...make him the head coach. I have no doubt that at some point he will grow into it. He's a helluva presence. See what happens. You're telling me that after decades of not winning, THIS will be the year that you will not watch with hope....because MESSIER?...is behind the bench? C'mon. Get some more talent on the ice. THAT is what really matters.
Kinda off topic, but one guy I would love to see the Rangers go after in the UFA market is Stephen Weiss. Sure, he's coming off injury, but if they could sign him under 4m per, he would bring good value.
I'm beginning to think that all this talk about "experience" in a head coach is a bunch of BS. Vigneault, Tippett, Ruff, Eakins, Boucher, hell none of these guys have won squat. It's a crap shoot with anyone. Messier's got just as much a chance of being successful as any one of the people being mentioned. My guess is they offer it to Vigneault, if he declines then it's Messier's.
This is all a formality so this can put Mess in as coach and then Sather can say ......after an extensive search we picked the best person for the position.
@NH_NYR_88 You root against Boston at all costs.... its fucking boston
@Josh6 Josh....... please. :(
@jslnyr1102 If you're right he probably decided on Mess before Torts was even fired - what a media circus that would be. Truth is I'd love to see Mess behind the bench but it would be smarter to let him be asst. coach for a couple years first
@jmacwilli And get a coach who can utilize that talent - Torts couldn't but he did great when his team had no talent
This actually kinda makes sense! Thanks!
@shoot_the_goalie i would rather throw out the extra million or so and get Horton. Isn't Weiss a center, we dont really need any more 2nd and 3rd line centers, and Horton can play both center and wing. Just my opinion
@gravey94 I agree about Mess. I'm wondering if this is all just a big media circus and that Mess was chosen before they even canned Torts. Other theory is that they get someone in for 2 years and put Mess in as asst. and then bring him in as head coach. That's if he really wants to coach in the NHL. Experience is secondary to having an unshakable will to win. I've been hoping they give Mess a chance all along.
@gravey94 Look up Mike Keenan's resume before he came to NY. 3 finals trips, 0 Cups. Just shows that it takes the right coach, the right players, and you could have a true contender. Anyone who said NY was definitely going to win before they did forget the previous 54 years of "this is our year".
@pronasty71 Yup. This is what I've been saying all along.
@AnnoyingJoe he just won them the game...
@AnnoyingJoe all i know is that he isnt cleared for golf yet. nor is redden. either way, someone gets a ring. how odd is that? im surprised that rozy is still in north america. I'm shocked beyond belief that redden is still in the league.
all i know is that the league darlings are out of it and we dont have to watch those cry babies play hockey anymore. wow. sorry. kinda went off on a tangent there.
@Josh6 @shoot_the_goalie Horton is not as good in terms of value imho. Plus Horton is injury prone. I did make an error...Weiss is at 4.1m right now. If we could get him for under 5m per, that's still less than Horton would cost, and they both produce similar numbers. (and Horton does it on a MUCH better team) As far as centers, you have Brassard, Stepan, Weiss, Miller. Trade Boyle (he's a UFA year after next) and buyout Richards (inevitable)
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG yea, another dman that pushes the offense but has lost his defensive capabilities, we will eat him and the Flyers up like usual
@Josh6 @shoot_the_goalie Fair enough. I got the numbers wrong. Horton is 4m cap hit. Weiss is 3.1m cap hit. So just drop my previous numbers by 1m and that's what I think the numbers will move to. So Horton is going to be looking at around a contract for 5.5m per. Weiss, probably 4m per. Weiss is still a better value imho.
@shoot_the_goalie @Josh6 i dont know where you saw Horton is making 5.5 this year because that is just wrong. He made 4 million dollars this year... that was his salary hit... He got 5.5 million this year, but that was just because he got paid less at the beginning. When it evened out the contract was worth 4 million a year. He is not going to get a 2 million per year jump... no shot.
@Josh6 @shoot_the_goalie Josh...you have a lot of "what ifs" in your plan. No guarantee Lindberg does anything, let alone become a top center in the NHL. Weiss is a borderline 1st line center, more likely a 2nd line center on a deep team.
Horton, imho, is gonna be looking for about 6.5m per, not 4.8m. He's making 5.5m this year and playing in the Stanley Cup finals. Do you really think he's gonna take a pay cut?
Finally, no guarantee the NYR even are interested in Malkin, and frankly, unless we got him for a steal, I wouldn't want a guy who has all the talent in the world, but only puts the effort in from time to time.
I would love Horton, but not at the price he's gonna be commanding. It is not realistic to think Horton is going to get anything less than 6m per on a new contract. I think it's realistic to get Weiss at 5m per. Weiss is probably a much better value.
@shoot_the_goalie @Josh6 Yea, but Lindberg is also coming up this year... next at latest and he is going to be a top 9 center for sure... that leaves no place for Weiss unless you want to let Brass walk... which I do not. I would much rather have Brass for less than Weiss. We also need a top 6 winger for the second line badly... Horton is perfect for that spot. He is a +21 for a reason, and its not just because of who he is playing with. His other linemates are hovering around +12. He is a great player and for something like 4.8 a year I would love him. Also, if you get Weiss it takes you out of the Malkin sweepstakes because I really do not think he is staying in Pitt
