After another disappointing season in Edmonton, Oilers GM Craig MacTavish has decided to make his third coaching change in three years, by firing Ralph Krueger.
The man expected to replace him? That, according to Darren Dreger at TSN, would be top Rangers head coach candidate Dallas Eakins, who apparently has a deal in place with the Oilers and will be introduced early this week.
...i know the Rangers want to wait till their organizational meetings start tomorrow before addressing their head coaching vacancy, but it might be time for Sather to start doing something other than just passing out questionnaires or they're going to continue to find themselves missing out on some pretty good candidates. Especially when Dallas and Vancouver have already begun conducting interviews and the Penguins might be in the market for a new top guy very soon.
...unless of course Sather is planning on making his decision based on a Trottier-like dissertation again.
...now I don't want to kill Sather for Eakins going to Edmonton, because the former Marlies head coach might not have been interested in the Rangers opening, but I would have felt better knowing Sather at least gave him something to think about.
...the scariest part of Sather doing virtually nothing so far in his search for a new head coach is that it makes it seem even more likely that Messier might be the guy.
Speaking of Messier, Larry Brooks at the New York Post says it remains unclear whether Sather is willing to even entertain the notion of taking the leap of faith with "The Captain."
Not that promising to those of us that wanted to see him up on the team this year...
If Sather rushes through the process of hiring a new coach then he gets trashed for not doing his homework. If Sather does what he is doing then he gets trashed for taking his time.
There is also the 3rd option which could mean Sather is stalling in order to get permission to talk to coaches who would not be available until July 1 because of their contract status.
I for one have no problem if Sather is wanting to wait until a Dave Tippett is free and clear from the Coyos or even a soon to be former coach of the Penguins.
But what I don't want is a recycle of John Tortorella
as much as I love #11, it would be a complete disaster to put him behind the bench as head coach. Assistant coach should be considered tho.
Give me some guys work hard on the D and punish the other teams forwards some MUCKERS who are willing to give up the body to try to get the puck .The goalie is great no question about that .But sathers was a MUCKER he should what makes a team tick
It was Sathers fault too many scorers and not enough worker bees .They may hire the penguins coach but the same story every year they dont play defense during the playoffs and except for the one cup the won a couple of years ago they havent come close again
none of this surprises me. the rangers somehow don't set themselves up as a premium destination. somehow this organization makes a pretty good team, the biggest city in our country, and all the opportunities off the ice that go with it look unappealing.
Patience please. Two weeks ago they had no thought of replacing Torts. Suddenly they have to start evaluating myriad candidates from scratch while other teams, knowing they were going to replace their coach, had already completed most of this process. The longer they wait, the more I think Tippett may be the guy. In fact, they might even have a deal in place with him...sssh.
I think the dark horse gets the coaching position. Bobby valentine just because Dolan thinks he will bring more money and publicity in
Of course he is sitting on his hands. He is massaging his prostate....and readying all NYR fans for a season of the same.
@TheProspectpark He's not rushing through the process by actually interviewing guys.
@Josh6 you think we would learn by now :)
I hear you and actually agree on Tippett, although i think he ultimatly re-signs with Yotes, but they really need to get going as Dallas are big fans of Vigneault and no guarantee Pens fire Bylsma, which basically leaves Ruff and Messier. Unless Boucher is an option. But I haven't seen one report linking him to the Rangers.
@Josh6 Nice try, Josh. We all know it's you and McPhee.
@jmacwilli massaging his prostate or ours?
I suspect you're correct - he knows who he wants... Maybe he's holding out hope the pens follow his lead and try to shake things up. I am surprised that Guy B isn't in the mix.
@Josh6 agreed. if this was 2008, i'd be all over Eakins.
@KevinDeLury if only Messier & Boucher are left, I think the choice will be easy though ;)
