Larry Brooks at the New York Post reports that Alain Vigneault is believed to have made a favorable impression on Glen Sather during his interview on Tuesday, though an offer for the Rangers head coaching vacancy does not seem imminent, unless the Stars make a time-sensitive offer to Vigneault.
Stars GM Jim Nill says he'd like to have a decision on a new head coach by the draft, but it's not a must.
...Vigneault is considered the top candidate AND impressed during his interview, so why isn't an offer imminent? Hmmmm, I wonder what it could be? (cough) Messier (cough).
Speaking of the former Rangers captain, Brooks adds that if Messier is hired as the Rangers next head coach he is likely to ask Brian Leetch to join him as an assistant coach.
...NOOOOOOO!!!!!!! Listen, I'm all for the idea of Leetch behind the bench as an assistant, but not when the inexperienced Messier is the head coach. Is Sather purposely trying to destroy these guys' legacy? And I'd love to get Lundqvist's thoughts on Sather bringing in two coaches with zero experience to lead a team expected to contend for a Stanley Cup.
...would much rather see Vigneault as the top dog with Messier and Leetch as the two assistants.
...if this is ultimately the direction Sather goes, you have to assume a second assistant will be brought in with NHL head coaching experience. Maybe Schoenfeld?
Finally, Brooks notes that the Rangers do not appear to be in any rush to speak with Lindy Ruff before their meetings conclude tomorrow.
...from everything I've been reading, it doesn't sound like Ruff is a serious candidate. Which I'm more than fine with.
Hey if Jason Kidd was hired by a Major Market NBA Team the Brooklyn Nets then why not Messier? A winner is a winner in any sport or business. Just ask Bloomberg the Mayor of New York City. Sports is a business and Dolan is a business man we fans are so tied up in the fantastics of it and don't think about the BOTTOM LINE$$$$. Messier knows these player and systems can be bought and sold in the common market. These players don't need to be taught the game they need guidance on how to win the Stanley Cup. There is more to it. Dolan still has to pay for the New Enhanced MSG!!
What're the chances of Sullivan just being promoted & then having Messier and/or Leetch come in as assistants?
I understand your concerns Kevin and yes, it would be most prudent to let Mess get some asst. coaching under his belt before making the leap but I also think that experience is secondary to the unshakable will to win that Mess has shown at every level, and would bring to a head coaching position should it be offered. This is a guy who would elbow his own granny in the face to get the game winning goal.
I was too young to watch thee 94 cup (I was two!), but I've seen enough replays of the whole thing while growing up that it almost counts. Either way, being a Giants fan, I've been kinda spoiled recently, so I guess I can wait for the Rangers. can't get too greedy.
No doubt the coach choice is important, but why does anyone think we will seriously contend for the Cup with this roster? As we've seen - Hank can't do it alone. still missing important pieces regardless of coaching choice. But we'll all keep watching. It's an addiction.
If they do decide to go ahead and hire Messier as head coach and Leetch as an assistant then maybe they should fill out the rest of the coaching staff with Graves, Zubov, Larmer and Richter.
I am being sarcastic of course.
The Nets were mentioned below signing Kidd. DO NOT underestimate Dolan's desire to stick it to the Nets a bit by stealing a bit of their thunder and getting in Sather's ear to give the job to Messier. He can't do it with the Knicks but he can certainly trump the Nets' news by putting the Captain behind the bench! Besides, Dolan could not care less about the Rangers so if hiring Mess only accomplishes pissing off one of his baby's rivals, I don't think he would hesitate to do it.
I still don't think Mess would be a bad choice because he's won as many Cups as a coach as any of the other candidates, and he's won 5x as many Cups overall as ALL the candidates combined!
Do we wait for Tippett now? With Coyotes situation literally in flux he could be a very viable option, and highly sought after by almost every team that needs a coach
Side note....how badly do Bruins fans feel today? They had SO many near misses (oxymoron) in OT. That is crushing to watch as a fan. Man, do both of those teams play great hockey. This is just awesome to watch - especially without the anxiety of having skin in the game. (As a NYR fan a position we are all too familiar with - lol)
Still...I LOVED watching the NYR when they were one "of them"....back in 93-98. Someday
Malkin just signed to a crazy deal... 8 years. 9.6 cap hit each year. How can they afford this shit?
Ay Carumba, this is ridiculous, so two guys who love being retired, spending time with their families, one with a ceremonial title of "special assistant to the President" whatever that means and the other who dabbles in broadcasting by sitting in on a dozen games a year (very well, I might add) are suddenly going to throw everything to the wind and jump into the frying pan that is coaching in the NHL? Why would either of them do this, they don't need the money. Neither of them seems to terribly miss the game. I don't get these "reports", it has to be just made up fodder to get the fanbase interested in reading their schlop articles. If Messier and Leetch become the coaches of this team, believe me, it will last exactly 20 games, when the Rangers are 3-15-2 and looking at the Aaron Ekblad, Sam Reinhart, Jake Virtanen sweepstakes.
If i was hired as head coach of the New York Rangers there is no way in hell i would want Messier to be my assistant. We have to understand that Messier is the closes thing to the highest power in the eyes of Ranger fans. If you go out and hire someone with no ties to the Rangers then you are putting a whole lot of pressure on him. The first time something goes wrong the fans will be chanting "We want Messier"....
1. The Nets just signed Kidd as head coach and everyone is pretty stoked.
2. "a team expected to contend for the Stanley Cup" Gotta love Ranger fans. If by contend you mean make the playoffs, okay, but they do NOT have the talent to be considered a contender for the cup! Yes....anything can happen in the playoffs, but is anyone watching the finals, or semi's?? The Rangers couldn't play with any of those four teams night in, night out. Holy crap is that obvious. They don't match the talent. They don't match the size. They don't match the speed. They don't match the depth. AND news flash....Crawford and Task have been EVERY bit as good as Hank.
3. Torts probably did more to contribute to the notion that the NYR are a contending team than anything else. Torts conjured a season where a mediocre team by virtue of just sheer will was able to get to the conf finals. That team would almost literally skate through a wall to win. Trouble is is that an act like that often grows old quickly - now he is gone. What remains is the false notion that somehow the NYR are just ONE piece away.
4. Make Mess the coach and let him grow into it. NO coach is going to MAKE this team anything that it is not. You might as well get Messier and likely have a coach for a decade (honestly, Mess loves the big stage and there is arguably none bigger). And as I have said a hundred times....it is not like the Rangers have been successful over the past 40 years and bringing Mess in is tinkering with success.
@Betweentheworlds The problem is that Messier can't get on the ice and make things happen the way he did as a player.
@Betweentheworlds The lack of experience worries me too, but Mess is a straight up winner. I just get the feeling it could be one of those "crazy enough to work" situations! I'd prefer Vigneault, though.
ya me too. I grew up a yankees fan and a giants fan so I get what you're saying. and while I do remember the 1994 cup I was only 10 so I didn't have the emotion I would now if te rangers won the cup. but I did get pretty emotional when the giants beat the pats the first time. so when the rangers win a cup and yes I said when. I will be inconsolable.
@dook83 If... and thats a big if this happens, which is worst case scenario. It would not be the end of the world just another rebuild. Which is all my life has been with this team anyway besides last year. Just a rebuilding year. We would have had 3 years of being a contender, and then back to rebuilding. I am used to it... like my dad said "you only get to see one cup per lifetime...."
At least its better than the Jets, I don't think they will ever win it again...
@Beckfan5 You forgot Tikkonen, who is my choice for head coach.
I think mess would be great at anything he does. I think the fac that I'm against his hiring is that it could blemish his name in NY. maybe not for guys who remember his playing days, but for younger fans who will only remember him as a coach. god forbid I ever have kids, but if I do and my son only knows mark messier as a bad coach I would feel terrible.
@jmacwilli Epic game, tough loss for the Bruins and HUGE for the Hawks coming back from 2 goals down!
actually the NHL will make the cap high enough until 2022 that the pens can fit this all in and sign lundqvist next season.
@Josh6 So wait, I thought we were signing Malkin? So the Pens didn't let him get to free agency? Shocking.
they can't. their 3rd and forth line are going to suck. also they will have to let Letang go or let fleury go and have a starting goalie that will make 2 mil. if this doesn't sink them then I will be convinced that the NHL rigs things in favor of the pens.
@Michael Barton Why would they do it...ego. The potential to win their 2nd Cup in NYC by AGAIN leading the team to the promised land would be hard to pass up.
good. now they can't sign Letang next year or have any depth. him and Crosby account for 28% of their cap (or close to)!!!
@jmacwilli I'm a Nets fans and I'm not stoked about Kidd at all. Very similar to Messier situation. I'll be rooting like heck for him to succeed tho.
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG "Inconsolable." Sounds about right for me too. it'll be so worth the wait. All of these mediocre seasons will make it that much better!
New NYR fans aren't used to the endless parade. Look....if the Rangers survived the loss of Mess and Leetch, they will certainly survive the loss of Hank.
JD, Beezer, Richter, now Hank...the NYR have always had good goaltending and though Hank has single-handedly kept them reasonably competitive I by no means think that is the way to go i.e. mediocre team with a goalie that stands on his head - NOT a winning formula and not too much fun to watch.
I'll say this. The Rangers having a mediocre cast of talent then they better have something worth watching. Last year it was heart and effort. This year was terrible - a middling team, with no soul. Ranger fans should HOPE that they get Messier as at the very least it will be interesting to watch a hockey God and New York legend who is known for peak performance and unyielding effort handle this team. For unless they suddenly get an amazing upgrade of talent, this team is going to be right back where they were this year and THAT was tough to justify spending the time to watch.
when I'm 86 sitting on my porch talking about the captain and my kid pops off with some wise crack about mark messier being a bum because he wasn't a good coach I'm gonna crack him over his head with my cane and then go find glen sathers grave and take a leak on it.
all I could think is how bad I wanted our 3ot game to end. it's agonizing if you're a fan of the team but as someone who didn't have a horse in the race...I LOVED IT!
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG that would be terrible, and i probably would never buy anything with the NHL brand on it again until Bettman was fired
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG yea I was not around for the 94 cup and to young to remember probably until 98 or 99. But at the end of his career I wanted Messier to hang it up because I thought he was a detriment to the team. Just by his play because he was ancient. That being said I understand what he did for us, but I don't have the same feelings as all of you guys do, whom he brought the cup home for... because in all fairness he didnt do crap for me...
I hope you're right. I'll support the decision but I do think some young fans will never have the memories that we all have of our franchises Paul Bunyan.
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG Honestly, if Messier became coach and it turned south, it won't effect how he is remembered. How many people focus on Jordan's days as a GM, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson as a coach, and even Gretzsky. One thing u can say about Messier is that everything he does, he gives 100% and if he gets the job I think it would be awesome!
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG really? if toronto beats Boston... I think for sure we are there. Boston was just a better version of us this year. I think we beat Toronto and beat Pitt if they play like that...
I guess. I don't get the "it shoulda been us" feeling this year like I had last year. so I'm not feeling as vindictive.
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG I was happy for him. I was shocked though that he actually shot the puck!
so much fun to watch. it's amazing how much more you notice when it's not your team. how bad does it feel that Rosi got the primary assist haha
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG Much less stressful when you don't have a dog in the fight!
