Craig Custance at ESPN Insider thinks there might be some trade activity during the draft this weekend and one of the players who could be on the move is Michael Del Zotto...
"Del Zotto has one year left on his bridge deal that comes with a cap hit of $2.55 million this season, and his price tag only goes up from here. Ryan McDonagh is going to get a big deal this summer and the Rangers also have Marc Staal and Dan Girardi as part of a talented defensive corps that is still relatively young. Del Zotto is a guy who may flourish under Alain Vigneault but with so many teams shopping for defense right now, he's a piece GM Glen Sather could use to fill holes elsewhere."
...if you're a reader of this blog, you know that I give Del Zotto a tough time. In fact, so much so he actually blocked me on Twitter. Having said that, I've also stated on numerous occasions that he's got the physical skills to be the Rangers power play point man for the next decade, so I'd really like to see how he would perform under AV's leadership.
...depending on the deal, I think shipping Del Zotto out could potentially be a huge mistake that could rival the Zubov debacle. Despite his defensive warts, the potential offensive return in a new up-tempo offense is definitely worth keeping him around.
...there's also no guarantee Staal is ever going to return to his All Star form and is likely headed to Carolina when his contract is finished, so there are potential holes on the blueline. Especially if McIlrath isn't ready this season.
Huge H/T to reader Josh6 for the link and text.
The fact that MDZ blocked you on twitter makes my entire summer. That is an awesome qualification to add to your resume.
MDZ vs Moore? Moore needs development as much as MDZ. If MDZ could be trained to keep the puck in the Offensive zone and not turn it over at both bluelines he could be great. He has shown me that he has the ability to play really well BUT the very next night he will turn it over at s critical time leading to a goal against. He continues to make poor decisions and ets beat.
If he is traded he will likely use that as the motivation he needs to become a star.
MDZ deserves better than what is written about him. He gets no protection gets hit often and still keeps going. I would say that if he played in Boston he would flourish. Lets give this guy a break especially since we have 2 star dmen down in Sauer and Staal.
This fan base wouldn't know a decent D-man. You booed Rosival outta town, and he has a ring. Just because you watch hockey between the Kardashian commercials don't mean you know anything about the game. DelZotto is not as bad as some of you idiots think. Go ahead and trade him, and watch him turn into something you'll regret. Some Ranger fans are as dumb as the people who voted in this government.
YOU!! are hard on Del Zaster????
Then what am I?
"...depending on the deal, I think
shipping Del Zotto out could potentially be a huge mistake that could
rival the Zubov debacle."
Del Zaster through his first 250 NHL games played (4 seasons) has 24 goals, 86 assist for 110 points. He also has a total of SEVEN PP goals in that time.
Zubov, in his first 229 games played (also 4 seasons) had 41 goals, 181 assists for 222 points. He also had 21 PP goals. Not to mention he lead the team in scoring in his second season!
Now I know that Zubov played in a more offensive era and had better teammates but the two do not compare.
good riddance MDZ. no one will miss that over rated turd. John Moore will turn out better. Heck - Stralman is better. Curious what Sather will be getting for him though....4th rounder and a tube of Ben Gay?
I think I am the only Ranger fan that thinks that DelZaster has something in him. I think he is just a kid making mistakes, but is a solid defenseman. But what do I know. I have only been watching hockey for 34 years.
I am Back from the grave, or studying for the Bar Exam, but pretty pretty please trade him....Although his value may be higher if we trade him mid season
before the debacle of not buying out Richards... I would have been all for DZ and Boyle for Bobby Ryan. They are looking for a dman and we could use a top 6 LWer
Richards post is up: http://www.nyrangersblog.com/2013-articles/june/rangers-not-buying-out-richards.html
the package for dz would have to be friggin sweet. otherwise we don't have the depth yet to replace him even though he's a train wreck at times.
They don't have the depth back there, at least now, to trade DZ. John Moore looked nice but very small sample set. Staal you hope comes back and is able to do his thing next year but right now that's still touch and go. Plus you can't save against the cap by dealing him unless it's for picks or a prospect (not happening in "win now mode" and would be silly to do with a player who's still blossoming).
Let's all give MDZ a break and remember he's barely old enough to drink. He showed glimpses of being a great player last year, perhaps he'll continue to grow this year.
You didn't just compare MDZ to Sergei Zubov did you?
You'd be more accurate if you compared him to Bill Baker.
Stall has always been overrated...I would hate to see them saddled with him while DZ shines somewhere else...trade the kid but only if you're getting a top 2 center, or scoring wing.
It all comes down to what we can get for him. My thinkings always been that he will be good but he's got some mental blocks. I'd rather see him work those out somewhere else as long as we can get some decent returns
I love people who say we can give up Del Zotto cause we have Staal and Girardi. There is no one who thinks Staal is staying when his contract is up (although I hope he does but I'm not unrealistic) and that's if he's ever healthy. And who's to say Girardi doesn't bounce next summer? He'll be looking for a payday and I wouldn't be surprised if he left. (Disappointed, but not surprised.)
I also would love to know who everyone is replacing DZ with. And for those who say McIlrath, I'm going to be blunt - please learn the sport since those are two completely different players.
@Rose M. Presinzano I agree with you 100%. He has some woes but he is reasonably priced and has some tools so lets see if A.V. can help him grow into the player he should be... but what do I know I have only been watching hockey for 23 years.
@dsclaw88 Good Luck
@FREE LINDBERG that would never happen you do realize Ryan is a highly coveted goal scoring forward right?
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG DZ and Boyle for Bobby Ryan?
@supermaz he's comparing the situation of trading a young defenseman 5 years after drafting him...
@supermaz Not really comparing, but I think Del Zotto has a lot more to offer we haven't seen yet and would hate for him to figure it out with someone else.
@Melissa (blknblueshirts) Rangers D corps isn't really as deep as some people think. See Roman Hamrlik.
@dsclaw88 on the Bar that is
I say trade him before the rest of the league realizes what most of us know...He will never reach the expectations put on him. He is what he is, a tentative poor decision maker.
@_Jack Exactly. Too many people don't realize that.
@supermaz If that's your only beef with MDZ, "a tentative poor decision maker" then damn. That's something a coach can modify.
