Larry Brooks at the New York Post says that even with Ryan McDonagh signing a contract close to $5 million per year, Mats Zuccarello's agent still expects his client to be playing with the Rangers this fall...
“As of now, our expectation is that we will re-sign with NY [rather than sign in Europe].”
The Rangers have $6.55 million in cap space remaining. That number does not include the possible $1.9 million savings from demoting Arron Asham and Darroll Powe.
...of the four remaining RFAs, I feel that Zuccarello is lowest on the food chain, but, despite the Pouliot signing, I still think he ends up back in a Blueshirt.
...if you've been reading this blog for awhile, you know I've never been a big Zucc fan, but he changed my mind last season. Sure he disappeared in the Bruins series, but after being acquired towards the end of the season he jump started the Rangers offense with his playmaking ability. I was also pleasantly surprised with the physical game that he apparently discovered playing in the KHL.
...i'd be all for bringing him back on a two-year deal for $1.5 million per.
Trade Boyle, Pyatt, and MDZ, to Boston for Lucic, Boychuk, and Paille. I know we all hate Lucic but we sure as hell wouldn't if he was on our team lol.
Be a mistake to not re-sign him. World class play making ability world class vision got good speed very very very smart with the puck and very hard to take off the puck considering his size. 1.5 is a honest number for zucc and haglin both should sign at that number for 2-3 seasons then you will see zucc get a big raise. I'm nothing but impressed with zuccarello ever since he got here 3 years ago I knew how good he was and how good he can be his points per game in the playoffs are acuptually better then his regular season pp game both I expect to go up with much more deserved ice time with scorers . Trade delzotto try and move boyler for some toughness a true hw would be nice I would trade delzotto for some draft picks oilers want him ship him there
rather they trade someone now or later, or not at all; the team as a whole can't be nampy pampy, tough teams will kill you if you show fear, look how caps played the rangers.might as well have torts. i'am NOT sayin' to be dirty; just show some grit an take up for each.nobody likes a cry baby wiener.
Zucc is one of my favorites. He definitely eared his spot on the roster.
For those of you who want to trade him, remember another small playmaker the Rangers had and traded? Marc Savard .
the rangers need to keep stephan an hags, maybe they could trade mdz an zucc; they NEED BIG TOUGH GUYS ,BOYLE is big , but not a fighter.maybe ulf can teach this team to be meaner without being in the pen box all the time.
To be honest I would rather have Lindberg, Fast or Kristo in the lineup if they prove they can play during the first month when Cally and Hags are out.
if we don't sign Falk, I know its only a 6th round pick... but just another case of throwing a draft pick in the garbage...
Agree; despite size, he does have passion & not afraid to mix it up. Rangers desperately need that. More concerned with signing of Step & the Jet - "Hags"
The 6.55 cap space number doesn't include the potential cap space savings from asham and powe but it also doesnt include the 1.2 cap hit for JT miller who the rangers will probably have on the roster in the fall.
With the support the Avs have and not having legit center with injury def cause production to drop no? Def not player once was but again, a goal scorer and excellent on the power play... Wouldn't everyone agree that's the 2 biggest things the team lacks?
i Love the inclusion of the Parros pic ...
Zuccarello was a nice surprise last year. Loved his heart. He came back with more game and didn't get pushed around. I like him with the organization for a few reasons, including his play-making ability, but not least of all that he makes the otehrs have to work that much harder to earn a roster spot.
@Rangers3024 i guess boyle will be here for a while, pyatt, mdz, for lucic would be nice, BUT i doubt boston would do that.this team needs stephan hags falk, someone will (maybe)get not what they should; but that's business.
I'm with you, maybe, but I"m only convinced on Boyler and DZ if we get a Great return -- those are Team guys. I'd be looking to deal Pyatt first. On the other hand, I'm not sure how different players are going to respond under the new coach. AV would seem to favor DZ, plus the kid's still young and I think his upside is still big. Between Boyle and Pyatt, under AV, I can't say. Under Torts, I keep Boyle; under AV, I just don't know.
hopefully in skating class
so you like Zuccarello
yup ... especially with Cally and Hags out for a chunk at the start of the season
@supermaz Hate to say it because it was a disgusting hit, but look where he is now... Career ending injury most likely. These undersized guys get outmuscled by these big guys and can get an injury like this much more easily. I like Zucc, but I would rather have Pouliot playing or Lindberg/Fasth playing in my honest opinion
i definitely want to start seeing bigger returns on DZ, but he's already been in the top 6 in points for 4 of the last 5 seasons and he's only 23. He's got 3 o 4 years before he peaks and he's in a good place to be great. After this season he's an RFA. I guess he's got some things to prove.
@FREE LINDBERG that's a huge IF however, we have too many ?'s on the roster already.
that's a big IF fans are waiting on, but frankly it's usually more challenging than that for players to make the jump, they may last a month or two or three, but new to the NHL players don't last the year ... in fact, Zucc is one among numerous examples
@lennynyr Somebody should clue Brooksie in about alot of things.
@kevin11 Waiving or trading Boyle and Pyatt will clear up that space.
@Mike Frank Zucc is a young guy and he should be signed instead the garbage that Sather signed last week. I can not think of any of those so called hockey players that I would like to see on the roster. They're either inferior or has been.
@AG_Blue Spot on, AG_BLUE. Couldn't agree with you more.
Yea definitely, I think he would be a fine replacement in hags spot until he's healthy. Would really like to see what he can do with a full training camp with the team under his belt. I did really like what I saw from him when he rejoined the team towards the end of the season. With a full training camp with the team for the 1st time I believe he will be a key player on this team and put up some pretty nice numbers. Plus he's added some grit to his game definitely looking forward to seeing him play for us.
Yes that seems likely to happen. Im not worried about signing our RFAs, I still think zucc and hagelin both are still signed after mac and step
@lennynyr I think he's talking about Hejduk. I think the Rangers should focus on signing their own players. Hejduk will probably get overpaid by a team with a lot of cap space and then underperform.
i hear you both ... but even if a newbie impresses in camp, he won't last the season. Zucc has been here now, he knows what it takes and I bet he comes back better this year. I'm rooting for the kids and all the new guys but, especially with Cally and Hags out with their shoulder surgery, Zucc seems like a shoe-in
i'm confident the powers that be will see clear to buy out Richards next summer ...
the only reason i suggest you like Zucc is 'cause he's not "nampy pampy"
if you move your feet, you don't always have to be as tough ... Montreal has done it recently ... I got away with skating with much bigger guys when I was a kid
Zucc has had some time in the NHL to get his timing, he can skate, and he has vision
not the answer to our prayers, but again, with Cally and Hags out for a while, Zuccs may just be more of a known factor for the team
can't argue with that, we need size in a bad way, but that still doesn't preclude Zucc for me, not under the circumstances ... and it's a reason to keep Boyle and Pyatt around ... i'd deal Pyatt before Boyle except I'm not sure who would do better with AV ... w Torts I think it's Botler, with AV maybe Pyatt -- can't be sure
also, little guys that have vision and can skate can play with the big kids -- move your feet, kid
I am 5'8" 150 pounds. I have been outmuscled... My size is one of many reasons I am not in the NHL. Zuccs has a future, just not on the rangers we need size...
And staal has been unlucky, but still not a small guy and I am pretty sure there have been a few other little guys who do just fine - not saying I want a whole team that size or that I don't want a big bruiser like Lucic, but Zucc earned a spot and showed more toughness and grit than most of the team - photo above should be proof of that!
Do you understand, Josh? Have you been outmuscled? Stand up, may man! Like Zucc!
me too, this might just be the chance he needs
still, with Cally and Hags out for a good while at the start of the season, we need Zucc who has a proven record with our guys on the ice.
I want to see all the new guys succeed as much as the next fan, but it doesn't happen automatically, you gotta put your time in. Zucc's done that, hell, Cally's done that, it's the way it goes. I'm rooting for Kristo, and he might just be poised to make it happen, he's not a total newbie or anything.
I have a good feeling about Kristo, but there's no guarantee he takes a spot from Zucc, and we don't really know at this point whether we want him to.
The roster will change over the course of the season. We need Zucc in the beginning while Cally and Hags are out. The kids will have to fight for his spot, and if they take it, how long will they last? Zucc's ahead of the curve.
@kevin11 I'd like to sign Falk too.
