Here's a couple of highlights:
- A third assistant coach, who will be Vigneault's eye in the sky during the games, should be hired in the next few weeks
- Vigneault wouldn't commit on Richards being a top two center in the Rangers line-up this season.
...it really is interesting to hear Vigneault say "from what I've been told" "it's my understanding" "I think." When a new coach comes in it's amazing how little knowledge they have of their new team and its players. Torts sounded the same way during his press conference in Vancouver.
...the most surprising thing I heard from Vigneault is that the only player he's spoken to since being hired is Richards. It's been two weeks, I would have thought a few players (especially Callahan) would have reached out to him already. And vice versa, as you'd think Vigneault might want to at least say hello to his captain.
Ineresting that he says he had no input into the Richards decision (yet that is the only player he has spoken to). Also the way he talked about the selection of the 4th asst coach. I get the impression that Sather is making sure to keep AV on a tighter leash after his experience with Torts.
My guess on his vernacular: In business it is always a wise idea to give yourself some "wiggle room" when you're not in a situation where a final decision must be made. Especially if you're dealing with say...the NY media. As far as his communication, or lack thereof, with the players...I don't know but it's my impression coaches don't have much contact in general with players during the offseason...its up to the players to train and get better and be accountable for themselves and their performance (again that thing where the coach can't go out there and score goals themselves).
The Richards thing has gotten odd on so many subtle levels. So many players on less awful contracts have been brought out for lesser lousy seasons. Can we all just agree this is DOLAN's call and not Sather's? Slats gave the press NOTHING in his decision to not buy him out.
btw I do think someone is going to get moved but I don't know that you move your economically responsible assets (Boyle, Del Zotto). Those guys are good players and Del Zotto is still slowly but surely trending upwards. Wouldn't trading Taylor Pyatt/Darrell Powe for a pick or something get the job done just the same?
Doesn't surprise me that Callahan hasn't spoken to his coach yet. Cally is another introvert like Drury was. He doesn't express himself quite well at least to the media. A captain should be the one held responsible for speaking up for his team and Cally should have at least reached out and made the effort to welcome his new coach. I like Cally as a player but not as a captain.
Overall Rangers signed a bunch of bums yeaterday. None of these guys will be on the team and re signed next summer. Pretty much a total waste of time.
Am I the only one that has a feeling a trade is coming real soon? With all these depth defenseman transactions slots has been making I feel that all signs point to a dman on his way out mostly to shed some cap. With the Moore signing I can see a delzotto Boyle package. I know they're depth defenseman but this is a next man up league now just ask Torrey Krug (that name still pains me to say). This is all speculation but we have to assume a trade is imminent, what do you guys think?
Cause I'm sure the players are all just hanging around waiting to speak with AV and not at all on vacations on a beach or with their families, right? If he still hasn't spoken in mid August the it could be considered strange!
One would think the captain should have been the first call and then to all of the key veterans if not the whole team...
Well Powe eas waived a couple of days ago allng with asham but trading pyatt wouldn't really be a tremendous cap saver. Delzotto has been anything but trending up, he was a skating minus all year and was by far the worst I've ever seen him during the playoffs, and with the emergence of stralman I feel he could be expendable to save cap. With the Dominic Moore signing what does this day for Boyle? I feel he's too slow for vignaults style anyway.
@stRangers fan I couldn't agree more. Finally someone out there feels like I do about Cally. Solid player but not captain material. I think Stepan will eventually fit in that role.
@stRangers fan I love Cally and respect him as a captain, but if we had it to do over right now, I would want it to be Mac or Step, there is just something about the way those two carry themselves. They are winners.
The Pouilet signing (or however you spell his name) has me intrigued - hes got some snarl and is young enough to develop his talent, which seems apparent, albeit unmanufest, and DMoore's a spark plug. Lets wait and see..
@stRangers fan Agreed.
Been sayin it since the first depth Dman was signed, in fact since Richey wasn't bought. Don't agree with the decision to keep him, don't always like slats' decisions but he's a chess player. As soon as the news came in I felt strongly big trade is afoot
@Ticklemetikkanen agree 100%.
@gravey94 Not the biggest deal, but last time I checked you could pick up the phone while on vacation to welcome the new head coach. Seems like the right thing to do.
@gravey94 hard to reach people in turks and caicos by phone i hear. i imagine that this would be the one month where the players could drink and eat like demons before shutting it down.
I've been saying this all season about Cally's captainship as well only adding that he's a young cap't and can atill grow into the roll. I love his heart and play but as cap't Being a "quiet lead by example" type won't quite cut it IMHO, not in NY
@_Jack I like Cally the player, never wanted him or liked him as a captain.
slapshot? is this Josh's new negativity outlet!? haha I gotta say...josh6 has been freaking awesome! serious wealth of knowledge lately.
Being realistic, I don't see any impact here. Johnson won't crack the lineup unless like 3 d men get hurt. Pouliot will be shuffled back and forth to Wolf Pack. I like Moore in 2005 but Moore's best years are behind him, there was a reason he played with 9 teams. These guys will not make any positive impact next year......sorry, I just don't see it.
Lol this guy is talking about NEXT year. You're hilarious. What type of impact are you looking for homeboy? This team needed a shape-up, not a full on haircut.
@stRangers fan someone is on the move for sure. i doubt it's MDZ. but if i was boyle i would start packing. same goes for dorsett who makes even more money. who knows. maybe talks with the hobbit arent going very well and thats why benoit pouuillelett was signed.
