We already learned that former Rangers defenseman Ulf Samuelsson will be one of Alain Vigneault's assistant coaches, working mainly with the defensive pairings and the penalty kill. Now, News 1130 out of Vancouver is reporting that Scott Arniel, who just recently left his post as head coach of Vancouver's AHL affiliate, the Utica Comets, will be the second man to join Vigneault's staff.
Hearing Scot Arniel will end up in NY with the Rangers.— News1130 Sports (@News1130Sports) July 1, 2013
Arniel spent three years as an assistant coach with the Buffalo Sabres and also spent one-and-a-half seasons as head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets. So he has plenty of experience coaching at the NHL level in all sorts of different roles and situations. Vigneault said that he wanted to bring in assistants with "experience" and Arniel certainly fits that mold.
Concerning, though, is that specific stint with the Blue Jackets. Derick Brassard's failure in Columbus is often associated with Arniel. Arniel and Brassard didn't see eye-to-eye and Arniel limited Brassard's ice-time or put him in the press box. After making Brassard a healthy scratch for the 7th time in 10 games, Brassard's agent unleashed this statement:
"While I have tremendous respect for (general manager) Scott Howson and the rest of Columbus' management team, the situation regarding Derick Brassard has become untenable. The coach has a history of burying players and using them as scapegoats to mask his own lack of success on the ice. Derick has been singled out, almost from the very beginning of the season, to be the fall guy in case things don't go well. The Columbus organization cares about Derick and has been good to him, but at some point, one has to say, enough is enough."
Now, there's plenty of reason to be cynical as a Rangers fan, but Sather, Vigneault, and the rest of management is not so ignorant that this wasn't addressed at some point before giving Arniel the job. Brassard broke out of his shell once he got a fresh start in New York and it would be pretty silly to bring back demons of the past if there were any indications it would be problematic. Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see how Brassard, Arniel, and Vigneault all handle inevitable questions concerning the past once training camp gets underway.

This is not a very smart move by the Rangers. Those saying that the Blue Jackets were just a horrible team and that Arniel is not to blame could not be further from the truth. The team at the start of the 2011-2012 season looked good on paper. They had some great players, including Nash and Carter (do not forget about that). Then as the hockey forums all indicated, the players hated playing for Arniel, so much so that Jeff Carter wanted to be traded, followed by Nash. Brass has also voice his dislike of Arniel. Even if it is the past, this is like bringing back a ghost from an awful time for the CBJ players we have. Then again, coaches are not meant to be friends with the players, they are meant to deliver results. Maybe this will work out.
This is all being overblown, the Arniel/former CBJ players' relationship. Arniel is being hired as an assistant, not the head coach. If AV finds there's a problem, it's easily rectifiable.
Lecavlier a flyer... 5 years 23.5 million... They have the better center out of the two OLD TBL GUYS
New team new situation, not worried. I believe Brass man has since developed and though I never followed CBJ I believe the thinking over there was his effort was in question. Here he's always given 101%
Who will fill in for Hags and Callahan for the month or so they are out at the beginning of the season?
If you want to switch to a more "puck-control" offense than you're going to need players like Brassard sooooo I wouldn't put too much stock in any previous issues they had. Brassaerd played great in the playoffs and is coming into next season with a lot more cred than an assistant.
God I hate this crap. Can it be October?
The kid hits!!!!
TRADE: Christian Thomas for Danny Krysto from Montreal... guess they figure St. Croix is the real deal...
I mean typically I don't care about this stuff but ummmm yeah...u got ALOT of ex Blue Jackets that played poorly for the guy as a head coach. If the situation became untenable it is an odd hire to say the least.
So let me get this straight...Torts was fired because Hank didn't like him and now the Rangers shouldn't hire Arniel because an underachieving center played well for 25 games when he came to NY but had a problem with the guy 2 years ago? When this team starts making management decisions based on players' feelings, all is lost! If Brassard plays like he did in the spring, I doubt there will be any problems with any of the coaches.
Oh, thought I should mention this. Brass and Arniel hated each other, but Dorsett and Nash REALLY hated him. CBJ fans had like 5 FIRE ARNIEL threads on HFBoards. Wonderful.
Don't like this hire one bit. This guy is worse than Torts with the media except he's a whiny little b*tch. How is this going to affect Dbrass?
Where did you get this rumor? Garrioch or Eklund? Since Brassard and Arniel don't get along, it would be a stupid move by Sather to hire him but why doesn't that surprised me when you have an idiot GM running things.
I was kind of hoping that the next assistant coach hired would be "a power play specialist," not "some guy that might screw up Brassard."
This is moronic. The Rangers need Brassard to play like he did in the playoffs more than a coach who successfully led the Blue Jackets to failure time and time again.
in all seriousness if this guy has a problem with brassard now then he's got a real issue with himself. maybe he didn't like his play as a young player, but the guy has been awesome since he got here. bury the hatchet boys and move on.
@FREE LINDBERG the way the Flyers try and assemble their teams...Its the way the Rangers used to. its fun to watch from the other side.
@_Jack Lindberg, Fast, Miller, or even this kid they just got who is 23... Kristo...
@AnnoyingJoe Take a peek at this kid Kristo, he could be on the Wolfpack this year and up next year... I like the trade, he is not huge, but he is bigger than Thomas. Both have pretty high level talent...
@gravey94 Isn't there a possibility that the guys didn't play well because the coach sucked, IMO. if there are 3 players on your team that did not like the coach and you still hire him is just asking for trouble. We are talking about an assistant coach here who should not be hard to replace. It isn't like we are pursuing a Scotty Bowman are we?
@gravey94 Its not just that, a lot of Blue Jackets fans and all over their boards have said that Nash and Dorsett hated the guy even more than Brassard. Another thing is, this guy is a loser, and really loses on every level he coaches....
I was really hoping for a Boucher hiring for a year or two until he could get a head coaching job
@_Jack What is this, why all the names?
@PenaltySh0t yea bring someone in that your star player hated... I still don't know what is going on with Sather this summer... I think he is losing his mind...
@shishya100 doubt it will affect him as much. He doesn't have nearly as much power over the players as before.
@lennynyr Brassard has played a total of 25 games with the Rangers. Somehow, I don't think we should be too worried about his opinions yet.
@lennynyr Brassard isn't the second coming of Gretzky. He looked pretty good over a short period of time with New York, but he still has to prove he can sustain it, and he still has to show that he's not the prima donna he used to be.
@lennynyr Actually all beat writers reporting it also. Adam had it first though.
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG It's more an issue if Brassard has a problem with Arniel. French-Canadiens are temperamental.
From what I have read looks like a real good trade for us.
@scrangersfan @gravey94 Sure. And isn't there the possibility that all this was completely blown out of proportion because they were a crappy team. IMO, it's more important that the head coach hires someone he trusts that shares his vision rather than worrying about what a few players thought of the guy 2 years ago. Players all liked Sullivan, how'd that work out?
@FREE LINDBERG KRISTO looks friggen good
@gravey94 @scrangersfan The Blue Jackets were not a crappy team under Arniel! Do you not remember the problems they hard because of coaching with Jeff Carter? They had a pretty good team on paper that last year of Arniel's tenure with the CBJ. This guy failed miserably with that team and is one of the reasons why Nash wanted out! Maybe he is a good coach for the PP or PK though, I do not know. But, there has to have been better candidates out there.
