Pierre LeBrun at ESPN reports that Brad Richards has been working out with Martin St. Louis in Connecticut lately, and sounds like a man hell bent on proving to people he’s still an elite player.
And if you don't believe LeBrun, check out this pic Richards tweeted out last week...
...the first thing that comes to my mind looking at this pic is what the hell is on the other end of that rope? Olivia Munn?
...in all seriousness, I know you guys were discussing this pic in the comments section the other day (H/T to Jack), but I figured it deserved a post.
...due to the injury risk, I still believe the Rangers made the wrong decision not buying Richards out, but I'm over it and hearing these reports has me more confident than ever that he'll have a huge bounce back season. This also further confirms that he's likely embarrassed about coming into camp last season grossly out of shape and wants to prove he can still be an effective player in this league. I know most Rangers fans aren't willing to do so, but I'm going to give him a pass for last season and will be cheering like hell for the guy to score huge goal after the huge goal the way he did two seasons ago.
NOW, he decides to get in shape. What was he doing last year for 7 million dollars?
I have zero sympathy for this guy.
If Richards comes to camp in the shape I hope he does look out he's going to be alittle faster and he's going to be alittle meaner Richards is a world class player keeping him was the right choice since gaboriks trade was made. Richards as torts likes to say understands what it takes to be a successful player in this league and I really think he didñt believe a season was happening which is why he was so out of shape but that's in the past we have to give him the respect he deserves and if he doesn't perform beautiful thing called healthy scratch to prevent injuries
yeeesh, he is doing some sort of hybrid Crossfit/Gym Jones/HiiT style working out. I do Crossfit religiously, but it is the kind of working out that can really injure someone, especially someone in Richards condition. I just hope they are really concentrating on NOT hurting his rotator cuff (a common injury in the crossfit world).....
Richey never was an elite player - not in my book. He just carried an elite's player contract. But he is still a very good as he has been a top 10 or 15 center in this league for his entire career except last season and if he can return to that form I will be happy and proven wrong.
Well, hell yeah you have to support him and hope. His being here is an indictment of Sather not him. And ..lol...the only good response I heard to that is from someone who posted below that imagine what Sather would have done with the money had he had it! So true. Bad play for him to be here, but get your ass in shape son and contribute...oh yeah...TO THE RANGERS...not the other team. (whew...close)
If the Rangers want to buy him out next season, I bet they can find a way to clear him medically in the off-chance that he is injured. They're above the law (just look at the Boogaard fiasco).
That said, I'm looking forward to a big year from Richards as he puts up some points while continuing to be a tremendous influence on our developing guys.
Any chance Richards can hire Stepan as some kind of advisor for like $2 or 3 mil a year on top of a contract from the Rangers for like $1/5/season so they're both making what they deserve?
Richard's biggest problem was making mental errors. He had time to get in shape as the season wore on. He made passes blindly, made drop passes intercepted by opponents, and tried to stick handle through 4 guys while we had the man advantage! I'd like to see him improve his decision making as much as his muscle tone....
I say buy him out next summer and wait till the summer of 2015 when the UFA's are Kane, Towes, Ryan, Krejci and our own Stall and Dorsett
Richards has been mostly healthy throughout his career. Obviously injuries are always a risk for any player, but it's not like he has a history of chronically getting hurt. I think it's a relatively low risk to take, especially given how driven he's going to be to prove the haters wrong this season.
I especially like hearing that he's training with Marty. That man is a fitness fiend, and if anyone can push Richie, it's him.
Anyone check out Olivia Munn on Conan last night? Wow. How did Richie lose that???
Anyway.... Richards could just as easily tear his biceps or his pec muscles working out just like in the picture above and be out for the next 6 months and play like garbage when he got back. At this point, I think its time NYR fans to put this in the past and just let it go. His contract isn't going to keep Stepan from re-upping. Anyone trying to prove otherwise is simply being hysterical.
Buy-out or not, he's a member of this team for the 2013-2014 season. As fans, we should all be rooting for him to bounce back because that will be a lot more helpful to the Rangers than if he tanks. And after all the ridiculousness that ensued on July 1st, Richards' contract does not look as bad, especially with the thought of what Sather might do with $6M in cap space during a free agent frenzy.
That pic looks like really impressive, until you realize that St. Louis is on the other end holding the rope with his pinky while drinking a protein shake.
I gotta say that I am happy that they didn't buy him out because I feel like you said he can definitely be an effective player. I mean what if slaths bought him out and now hes working his ass off and not to play for the rangers who would still be paying him? I won't give him a pass for last season but I won't fully hold it against him either. I'm kinda inbetween on it. Hoping he has those big goals like he did against PHX.
@WisconsinRangerfan12 That's fair, but he is a Ranger and he's going to be needed if they want to seriously contend for a Stanley Cup.
@mikejaret meethinks his very very expensive trainers are aware of all of this and of course would have checked up on any previous conditions he might have had.
@Brukie_ Zero chance Chicago lets Toews or Kane go anywhere (unless you meant Evander Kane, but I'm guessing you didn't).
yeah, man, wouldn't mind Zucc workin out w Marty while they're at it ..... Richie's a fitness fiend anyway ... i still don't know what the hell happened last year ... we'll find out
@gravey94 Agree that he should have been bought out but also agree that he has more in the tank and a chip on his shoulder so should be fun to watch next year. Of course I want him to succeed. No matter how he plays though his contract is no good and has to be bought out. I don't like it but blame the new CBA or more to the point the loophole that got filled that the Rangers used to avoid the CAP hit for him. I'll give him a pass for last year and hope to hate to see him bought out.
@gravey94 I think most all ranger fans will be rootin for him, its the ones who are a-holes and know nothing that will spread their negativity around
