NYR have approx $11.1M to sign McDonagh, Stepan, Hagelin, Zuccarello, Falk. Another $6.43M over summer, but tight roster squeeze if no trade— Larry Brooks (@NYP_Brooksie) July 5, 2013
...wow, that's tight. Not sure how Sather can sign all five of those guys with so little cap room. With the Rangers stock piling defensemen the last week or so you have to assume a trade has to be coming. Unless the Rangers can catch a break and get someone to take Asham or Powe off their hands. But considering no one claimed them off of waivers, I doubt it.
...got to figure McDonagh gets $4M per, Step gets $3.25M per, Hagelin gets $2.5M per, Zucc gets $1.75M per and Falk gets $1.25M. That's a total of $12.75M. Even if you minus a little from each, I don't see how Sather gets it done. I know the summer cap allows them to get it done now, but at some point they'll have to shed money.
...so what do you guys think? Trade coming?
I don't think slats is going to screw up keeping hags, Stepan and McD. Don't always trust him on free agency signings but i am pretty sure those guys will be signed up soon. Likely zucarello too.
Regardless of all this crap... and even if the team wins (which I really really want them to) we get to watch two things no one else gets to in the league.
1. The best goalie in the World. For this era of goaltenders right now there is no one better, and I would say Quick is the only one even close because how he turns his game up in the postseason. Getting to watch Henrik Lundqvist every night is a pleasure in itself.
2. Rick Nash. The guy is animal, and I cannot wait to see what he does in a full season, he would have had around 35 goals last year if the same stats were extended. All that should only go up in a new, more offensive system.
I can't believe I am saying it but start to look at the positives. I can't wait to watch these two, and the only complaints I have about Nash so far are his postseason play which hopefully he can prove to be a fluke in his next playoff stint.
Why is this Justin Falk guy getting $1.25M? He's going to be battling Johnson and Bickel for the 7th D spot. Only one of those guys is on the opening night roster, so there's another ~750k in savings.
As soon as they announced Richey's still a Ranger I started to think a trade was coming. The equation of the team's current needs vs $ just didn't add up. I don't agree with Slats' decision on Richey. I haven't liked all his moves but Slats is a chess player and he's clever. Hiatory tells me hes got something up his sleeve. The addition of back up dmen suggests either MDZ is on the block or a big deal with Carolina with Staal as the centerpiece awaits Wait and see I guess but he hasn't done poorly IMO with the change he picked up yesterday.
To all you guys freaking out about cap space... even without a trade, read this...
Ummmm. Here's a thought.. Maybe we should have bought out Richards.. Sather sucks.. He's dinosaurs dinosaur. The game passed him by a long time ago.
They can easily free up space by trading Pyatt. Someone would want him. He is big & experienced plus he is cheap & only has 1-yr left on his contract.
Kevin.....I love ur blog & ur posts however lately uhavebeen like Chicken Little....LOL. Your always worrying lately mostly about stuff that's not even going to happen.
Cut that little midget (Zucc) out of the picture immediately....doesnt belong in the NHL...The Rangers are better off playing JT Miller for the first half of the season...who knows?; better than watching the hobbit get bounced around the rink like a pinball by opposing players
Isn't there a summer cap which is much higher, then u have to get down to by the start of the season? If so u r not counting the money saved by Asham & Powe getting waived. According to Larry Brooks , they save another 2-m even if they don't get claimed cause if they go unclaimed they get sent down & their cap hit goes to 100-k each.
Stop panicking!!!! All 5 guys are RFA's....... There's a pretty hefty price to pay by another team if they sign an offer sheet.
Can still waive Pyatt and maybe Boyle to get under the cap limit. Only trade I would like seeing is for Kane and Byfuiglen.. Kane, 5.25M for 5 more years and Byfuiglin 5.2M for 3 more years. But where are the Rangers going to come up with another 10.45 cap space? A possible offer for those two guys is MDZ, Callahan and Boyle whose total cap hit is about 8.5M and waiving Pyatt another 1.5M so it's marginal. Don't know if the Jets would accept that package. Hate to consider trading Callahan. But the Rangers are deep at right wing and with Kane we'd have our Milan Lucic and with Byfuiglin we'd have big size with one of the hardest shots in the league, both things this team needs. With Richards bought out we'd definitely have the cap space. What do you guys think about making this deal if we can fit it in the cap space?
He can trade the 2 sky bridges Dolan is building....MSG Bridges Falling down...falling down....falling down......
Mcdonagh getting between 4.5-5 per. So space needs to open up because step is getting 4 to. Something needs to happen or zucc or bags is gone
i agree ...
@FREE LINDBERG 16 games. 2 goals. Rick Nash.
not sure why ... 1.25 for a chance to compete
-- unless he's part of the rumored trade that is reasoned speculation
not sure why
@FREE LINDBERG that's what i've been saying!
@ThrSage Welcome to TheNYRBlog "Offseason Mode." lol
@ThrSage Its safe to say these moves are a little more than unsettling, especially because I would have loved to seen this done after the RFA's were signed. But, I like Pouliot think he will be strong for us as a 3rd liner. I would be okay with the Moore pickup if Boyle gets moved... no place for both of them, especially because they are both great at the dot. Boyle is definitely not a winger, so we should try to move the cap hit and get something back, like a second round pick and prospect.
When Richards was not bought out, I just wanted all our RFA's to stay (and if one of them had to go it should be Zuccs)... he just better get Step and Mac signed long term ASAP
not too excited about the fat man ...
but we could use a big guy, not that he's a fighter
questions about Kane as a team player could be answered here, but i don't see that happening either
Yeah, Winnipeg's GM would have to be smoking crack to agree to that. Love how we assume GM's in other towns aren't watching or scouting our players. We know MDZ is flaming out and Boyle plays hard once every two weeks, yet professionals whose livelihood is partly based on making these evaluations doesn't know that? Kane and Bylf are two studs. Come on get real.
I don't think Stepans gonna get 4-m....he has no leverage. slats will play hardball & give him a bridge deal at 3-3.5-m. Same W-Hags except he will get 2-2.5....
Though w-that said I think ur right a trade is coming cause they have added a lot of depth pieces. Between the new pieces, the prospects & the left over spare parts(Boyle& Pyattet al) there are now a lot of guys who are similar players. I could see Boyle Pyatt or MDZ traded.
When you look at the intention behind the comment, you realize those are your stats, @Wallace1
Since you asked, Rick Nash had 21 goals in 44 regular season games. If you extend those numbers to 82 games it's actually 39 goals. That's without considering all of the challenges players had last year with an uncertain, lockout season.
Any Rangers fan is rooting for Nash to be successful. Given a clean start, the fan that can do some basic arithmetic has to like Nash's chances. @FREE LINDBERG is just talking about last year, but looking ahead, Nash will maybe not play all 82 games but is likely to do slightly better next year, as several of our players are, with a fresh start, training camp, etc ...
There will be, once again, a lot of new faces, including a new coach, but the nucleus is intact and a full season is in their favor.
LET'S GO RANGERS !!!
This is true, and I overlooked that scenario, he is very tradeable and may not fit in as we'll with AV as he did with Torts, perhaps a package to Vancouver? G, Pyatt & Boyle? Torts would be like a kid on Christmas. Excellent observation Free
@FREE LINDBERG On paper, trading Danny is a good move. He's UFA next year and likely at his peak as a player. The problem is that Staal might not be what he once was. Without him anchoring things back there, our D doesn't look quite as stable.
@coolandluke Remember the Gomez!
@ThrSage Girardi and Boyle would be a very strong package to most teams
@ThrSage Basically zero chatter... Slats is doing a great job keeping everything under wraps. Feels like something big could be coming. I would not be shocked if Girardi's name has been floated around. With him and DZ being Free agents next year, the Rangers will only have space for one, and although he struggles a lot, AV apparently wants him in his system. Also, would give us more cap to move G
When dealing with the press, the pros are going to say they did their job -- and you should too! -- unless they really screwed up and have to own up to it. Pros don't make excuses, especially pros that are supposed to be great, like Nash and Richards.
If they wanted to,
the lockout is a legitimate excuse -- the top players cannot use it
though -- the team did not get to train and prepare together and they
needed to, because there were more changes to the roster than any of us
expected last year. I thought it was everybody -- another reason the
pros don't even have to make the excuse -- but Almost everybody knows a
lockout shortened season is a real impact on a team.
Scoring in the postseason is always a different thing, but less so when you've had a whole season, including training camp, with a new team ....
If your real concern is Nash scoring in the playoffs, hopefully he is with a better team now than he had in Columbus. There's also reason to believe Nash may thrive under AV more so than Torts. In addition, the guy wants to score in the playoffs way more than you want him to.
@AG_Blue @Wallace1 @FREE LINDBERG I like Nash, but scoring goals in the regular season and scoring goals in the playoff are two different things, so those statistics mean nothing. I do think Nash can score in the playoffs but he has not come close to proving it. I don't think he played very well against DC or Boston, yet he says he did. That's weird. Also, the lockout excuse is ridiculous. Not even Richards uses it.
man, i think Josh started battin that around last year ... i don't like it, but it's a real consideration
that's 5 players when they include RFA's Zucc and Falk along with McDonagh, Stepan, and Hagelin. Neither 11.1 nor 12.4 gets all five, but 12.4 should be good for 4 of them. Much negotiating to be done, and perhaps a trade along the way .....
I agree u r mostly positive I couldn't't read the blog if u weren't. I'm just having some fun w-your posts
@ThrSage I think for the most part I am. Besides pointing out some doomsday scenarios, I never say that the Rangers are done or have no chance before the season even starts. And to be honest, if the Rangers can find a way to get all five guys signed, I think they're a playoff team without having to make a trade.
I can't wait to see how Kesler & Sedins react to having to block shots.....if they rebel Torts won't last
Not really. Have to look at their roster more closely, but I am not in love with edler, and Lesler is not being moved because torts would be run out of town. Unless its a huge blockbuster, involving sedins and cally Girardi and del Zotto which is clearly not happening I'd have to look at their roster more closely.
Since Torts loves Giradi & Boyle & coaches always love to get "their guys" once they go to new teams, I can see Torts wanting Giradi&Boyle is there anyone on the Canucks u can see either of those guys traded for? Either in a package or by themselves?
