In discussing what he'll do when free agency starts tomorrow, Glen Sather tells Andrew Gross at the Bergen Record that while he'll investigate his options, he want to make sure there are roster spots available for some of their young prospects to compete for...
“There’s some options, it depends what’s available. We have lots of good kids coming and I don't want to shut the door on them."
...let me translate that for everyone: "Because we decided not to buyout Brad Richards, we have absolutely no cap space for free agents, so we have no choice but to give our prospects a legit chance to win spots."
...remember how much fun the last two offseason were with the Richards signing and Nash trade? Yeah, don't expect that kind of excitement this year.
...really going to be a huge camp for guys like Miller, Hrivik, Kristo, Jean, Yogan, Fast, Lindberg and Bourque. With Callahan and Hagelin likely to miss the first month of the season there are two forward positions up for grabs, plus current players such as Pyatt, Asham, Boyle and Powe, in my opinion, can easily be beaten out for roster spots. Would really like to see a few of those young guys make a real run at making the big club out of camp.
Meanwhile, Larry Brooks at the New York Post feels that despite his agent saying there's "still some work to be done" on a new contract, Ryan McDonagh is likely to sign a deal worth between $4.5 and $5 million for anywhere from three to five years, with the price escalating as does the term.
If McDonagh wants to go to arbitration he has to file by July 10th. The Rangers can file the next day if McDonagh doesn't go that route.
Kev...Let it go on the Richards buyout already....LOL. Here is an absolute irrefutable fact, they kept Richards cause if they bought him out there was no FA's worth signing. Thats why they kept him. You can disagree w-that but again the fact is if Richards has a bounce back season then we R better w-Richards then w-out. So what were we going to do if we didn't buyout Richard? There were no moves to make. Slats is desperate to win a Cup so desperate he didn't give Messier who he considers like a son to him the HC. If he thought he could make the team better he would not only buyout Richards he would throw in his wife too...LOL
I think most people agree he will have a bounce back year. If he does & Kreider, Lindberg, & a few others develop into what we think they can this team can win a Cup.
Yeah, it's all Richey's fault. Right. I don't agree with the decision either but its done. I don't agree with everything Slats does but he has 50 yrs in this league. He has a pretty goid idea what this team needs now i would think. the nucleus is pretty strong. the kids are pretty good so we can live without big free agent signings. We need gritty supporting roll players and we will be competitive. Powe and Asheam are gone. Lets see how it all plays out now
OK, the present roster forwards left as of today are Stepan, Richards, Brassard, Boyle, Nash, Hagelin, Kreider, Zucc, Callahan, Pyatt, Dorset (did I miss anybody) plus Callahan and Hagelin won't be ready. That leaves 3 spots open and others that can be battled for. If Lindberg sparkles, he could kick Boyle out of a job. Think either Kristo or Fast will get the Callahan opening, not both.
As long as Richards is healthy as of next June 30th, I can live with what Sather is doing. Maybe send him on vacation in January?? LOL
The Rangers will make a move next year to buy out Richards. Next years free agency looks much better than this years. Who knows who goes back to their team but I'll take Stasny, Henrik Sedin or both if Lundquvist can help, and Vanek over Richards...... And some SIZE
And so it begins. Every single move the Rangers make or cannot make will be the direct result of keeping Richards on this team. WHY? Cos he MIGHT play better next year!
More room for Kristo & Kreider to get real minutes. If the boys are going to get better they will need the minutes to prove themselves. I can't wait for the AV to put out Kreider-Stepan-Kristo as a scoring line. This is going to be a fun year to watch. Less Hype than last year, but all HOPE!!!! #BleedBlue
Ok, so Sather wants to go young (again) basically cause he has no choice. I get it.
But keep in mind, this team that has been around the last 6 -7 years with Lundquist hasn't produced anything that says it is a cup contender. Every year but one - this team has had to use all their energy to grab a 7,8th seed to get in and rarely do they make much noise when they do.
So now if they address all their needs by giving them to unproven rookies, then you have to expect a long learning curve with plenty of mistakes that will cause them to lose games. And plenty of PATIENCE will be needed. Question is - does Lundquist have plenty of patience to give here?
By the time this team is completely jelling, Lundquist will be about 35-36 years old and past his prime. If he re signs thinking they are going to win now then he is only fooling himself. The bold move would be to trade him now and get great top notch value back and go get a stop gap goalie for 2 years while drafting and molding one now for the future.
This will be ugly in a few years when there is no championship and Lundquists' beard is grey.
Sather doesn't know how work quietly. While I'm sure there wont be any huge signings by the Rangers come tomorrow at noon, the Rangers are allowed to be 10% (i think) over the cap during the summer. So the Rangers could conceivable sign a free agent that puts them over the cap, then try to move a guy like Boyle, Pyatt or Powe after.
I'm not worried about McD. I think his deal gets done. i don't think anyone will want to give up 3 first rounders for him by giving an offer sheet.
@ThrSage I really try and respect everyone's opinion here, but there are a few who, every night must put on their Ranger pajamas before they go to bed to dream how there is no wrong in Rangerland. No free agents that are better than Richards? What the hell are you smoking? Not only can't we sign free agents, but what about our own players? Sather is not done trying to pare down our roster out of neccessity to keep Richards. Right now I hear he's shopping MDZ. Who will be next?Believe me, the fallout from this will put the Rangers years behind instead of ahead in a quest for a cup. Sweet Dreams.
I agree I think the youth movement could pay off. I just wish Richards was gone because there are one or two players that would be good pick ups for us. I want kristo to have a roster spot out of camp.
@stRangers fan I agree I don't see Hank wanting to stay so may as well get a boatload of player/picks for him.If the Rangers choose to go with more youth then let's call it what it is....bascally a rebuilding year.I have no problem with that but then why keep Richards? I really don't see what the point of keeping Richards was. With Asham on waivers we lost our toughness unless Mcilrath makes the team but you cant reply on a rookie to do all the dirty work either. Very, very confusing!
Much rather see pylon, ash, and even the giraffe or Powe go for a big solid grinder that can take on guys like lucic and allow JT, kreider et al be given a legit chance to have an impact.
@MikeBlue @ThrSage You try and respect other people's opinions but sometimes it's hard to do because of the way they come across. They alledgely have "sources" and inside information, of course it's all bullshit. It's their way to attempt to impart their so called hockey and Ranger knowledge on the world. Keeping Richards is a mistake! People think he will have a bounce back year so what! He isn't worth the cap hit period!!! What is a bounce back year 60-70 points maybe? NO free agents as good??? NONSENSE. Remember your talking about the third line centerhere so tell me what woul dbe wrong with Mike Riebeiro, Derek Roy, Saku Koivo, Stephen Weiss or even Tyler Bozak? And they would be cheaper. But the Rangers are stuck with this albatross for this year lets see what happens
I think we all can agree Pyatt was the one to keep out of the 3. he is familiar with Viggy and can score a bit. even though I will miss those wild Asham slappers from the right circle.
@_Jack They're both skating on sponges. Pyatt at least knows where to head for since he's been slower for longer. Richie seems to have no concept that the puck won't be in the same spot when he finally lumbers over the blue line.
I am so unimportant u feel the need to not only respond to me but to comment on something else I posted. If I am so unimportant then just ignore me. However we both know why u won't cause u know Im right & wish u could have the accesss sources & life I have. So I prrsonally don't care if U like or don't like me or even if u believe me. Just the fact u responded is all I need to know Im in ur head & under ur skin....In fact Im LOL about it right now.
@ThrSage Another typical response from the boy who knows everything there is to know about everythin. Youre a moron. Now yor a grammar expert as well. Those players are cheaper third line players so dont say they arent as good., this is a cap world we live in and they are all better choices as far as the cap goes. You thibk they can win a Cup with this team???? You need to get off the pipe in your mothers bunker idiot! Just a big bag of wind!
Your a 13 year old idiot who plays table hockey . What I forgot about hockey you still need to learn jerkoff!.
Not So Nashty MikeBlue ThrSage Hey dipshit I do have the sources I say I do & its obvious you are jealous of that. Maybe someday u ill get to where I am in life, but first u have to get out of your moms basement. Your so dumb you used albatross in the wrong context.
BTW go look at my past posts & I told u guys before Slats said it publicly Torts got fired cause of stuborness. Had it & posted it here long before he said
As for the rest not one of the guys you mentioned are better then Richards right now let alone have his resume'. So please your response just shows your an idiot.
I agree. Of course, but these guys have to prove they deserve pp time by fighting there way to the net and reaking havoc every shift, and then setting up the screen when they do finally get the opportunity to get pp time. It's not like the coach is telling them " whatever you do don't plant your big bodies in front of the net". There is some wisdom to not having just the perimeter players on the pp unit. Cally shouldn't have to take on the role of a big man because he's not, but I don't think Torts believed he had a choice and would have loved for either of those guys to step up into that role.
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG Pyatt's not a bad player. He didn't do a whole last last season but quietly he plays his position, makes very few errors and does some nice board work, and he can find the net once in a while. I think if he could add a bit of snarl to his game next year it would quiet the critics.
