As expected, Katie Strang at ESPN reports that the Rangers have not extended a qualifying offer to RFA Michael Sauer and he will become a UFA.
Strang adds that Sauer is still dealing with residual effects of the concussion suffered from a hit by Dion Phaneuf on Dec. 5, 2011.
...and that my friends ends Sauer's tenure with the New York Rangers.
...not a suprise, but still sad to see. The Rangers have yet to replace Sauer and likely won't until McIlrath is on the Rangers roster and living up to expectations.
As I posted this weekend, Strang says the Rangers have sent qualifying offers to Derek Stepan, Ryan McDonagh, Carl Hagelin, Mats Zuccarello as well as newest Ranger Justin Falk. All of those mentioned have arbitration rights except for Stepan.
...i don't expect the Rangers to go to arbitration with any of their RFAs.
In the AHL, the Rangers extended a qualifying offer to Brandon Mashinter, but not to Jyri Niemi or Nick Palmieri.
...NICE!!!!! Loving that Mashinter will be in the mix again this year. Hopefully he doesn't let me down again if given another chance in the NHL.
From the bottom of my heart I am saddened by this. I hope that he can eventually resume his career but like others have said obviously they are all prone to this sort of injury. Maybe the medical field should look into why these fellows (although built like monsters) are so prone to concussions.
Phuck that Phaneuf! Get well Sauer! You and Blackburn are the Moonlight Grahams of the NY Rangers..."hey rookie, you were good!"
What a shame. The kid had so much potential. Here's to hoping he eventually gets a clean bill of health and the opportunity to continue his career. I'm miserable having a sprained ankle that keeps me out of rec hockey. I can't imagine what he must be going through. Just terrible.
Michael's injury was devastating - both to the team and, certainly to him personally. I have had him in my mind all last year. It's really terrible. And both his brothers had their athletic careers cut short due to concussions. It makes you wonder if there is a genetic component to the seriousness of these injuries. As much as I bleed Ranger Blue, my wish for Michael is a full recovery for his health sake. If somehow he would read this - get well, Michael. Many are wishing you the best.
It's really too bad. Sauer is an incredible defensemen, the Rangers were incredible when he was on the team, very good with and without the puck, watched him shut down plays again and again, could easily have been an all-star. Hopefully he'll get another chance soon. Get better Sauer!
Okay, what I am about to write probably is unfair, but I think the Rangers should have extended an offer at whatever minimum possible, just to help Sauer transition further. The Rangers usually are a class organization and there may be something to all of this I don't understand, but I'm sure a league minimum thrown the kid's way wouldn't hurt the cap all that much and it would be a good thing to do. I am bummed by all of this.
Andrew Gross reporting that while Dylan McIlrath's skating has improved, it's still obvious it's something he needs to work on in order to be NHL level.
Dislike. Hope he can handle this setback better than his brother. Geez. 3 brothers...all 3 careers ended by concussions. Just awful.
Just realized... it is going to suck this week to watch other teams around the league get better while we have to stand pat :(
I hope Glen knows what he is doing
I hope that when McIlrath makes it to the Rangers he will inflict a bit of pain on Phaneuf as a payback for whatever he did to Sauer. I know it was a clean hit but I'm an eye for an eye guy who believe in squaring the score regardless of the circumstance.
Lindberg will get a LONGGGG look to make the team, as will Fast. Lindberg "best season of all the prospects"... Cant wait to see this kid.
Miller, Kreider, Fast, and Lindberg only ones that Clark thinks have a chance to make the team
So sad. I was going through my favorites on YouTube yesterday and I came across his first goal. My favorite aspect of his game was his nastiness in front of the net. He was always the first one to shove players away from Hank.. something they've been sorely missing
@gravey94 it really is an amazing reference!!!!
@gravey94 holy shit thats an amazing reference
@Melissa (blknblueshirts) Because he's completely awesome! Duh.
Actually it looks like they are 41? Not counting the 5 RFA's (46) And I'm guessing potential UFA's & Draft Pick EL's. So they are still pretty tight to 50.
@KevinDeLury My bad! Sorry, I forgot that lol
