Larry Brooks at the New York Post has this quote from Ryan McDonagh's agent Ben Hankinson on his client's contract negotiations with the Rangers...
"Still some work to be done before a deal is made."
Meanwhile, Rick Carpiniello at the Rangers Report wonders with the Rangers up against the cap if another team had the guts to submit an offer sheet to McDonagh when he officially become a RFA on Friday...
"The Rangers surely would match up to $6M per year somehow, even if they might have to get rid of players they’d like to keep. But what if the one GM decides to go to $7M per, or more? Decides to go to a point where the Rangers can’t match because they decided to keep Richards?"
...i'm officially sick to my stomach.
...Sather is a respected man amongst his fellow GMs, so I very much doubt any of them will cross him by offer sheeting McDonagh. Having said that, I bet Garth Snow would love to stick it to his cross town rival and the Islanders have plenty of cap space. Talk about heating up the rivalry in anticipation of the move to Brooklyn.
...if not buying out Richards ends up costing Clowe and McDonagh it should also cost Sather his job.
Speaking of not buying out Richards, Glen Sather explained the decision to Andrew Gross at the Bergen Record...
“There were lots of factors. He’s been a good player. He had an off year and we think he’ll be much better next year. That’s probably the deciding factor.”
When asked if the risk of Richards being ineligible for a buyout next season due to injury was one of those factors, Sather responded...
“No, not right now.”
...is Sather kidding me?!?!?! How is Richards getting injured not a factor right now? So, when will it be? When he actually gets hurt?
...as much as I think it's a huge risk, I do understand Sather's reasoning and agree that he'll be much better this season.
Just re-read this & saw the Isles speculation...are you serious? You really think the Isles would do that? What planet you been living on? Have you not been paying attention, the Isles barely sign their own players to reach the floor. They just let Streit go cause they don't want to pay him. They traded for Tim Thomas so they can reach the floor in payroll w-out actually having to pay the $$$$ & U speculate thye would offer Mcd an unmatchable contract? Thats the equivalent of speculating the Pens are going to trade us Crosby & Malkin for Biron, thats how ridiculous that is. They don't have the money. Besides you think they are going to rile up the Rangers w-all the young players they have to sign? Sather would be on the phone w-Tavares agent in about 3-seconds telling him don't sign anything until ur an FA so we can give you the greatest contract ever...lol.
Its not a factor cause no succesful person, business, team, entity ever makes decisions based on fear of something going wrong. Even if he gets hurt & retires young the Rangers will survive it, its not the calamity Brooks & everyone has made it out to be. Also like I said if he is hurt...he will get unhurt real quick when buyout time comes.
It is now "let's freak out over every possible rumor" time among Ranger fans. I so hate this time of the year because so many Ranger fans overreact to every possible thought of bad news.
What is next Henrik Lundqvist demands that the Ranger bring Sean Avery out of retirement or next year he will sign with the Islanders?
I remember when Neil douche bag Smith tried to buy out rfa Joe Sakic but no GM with an ounce of integrity would even think of it, and certainly not McD at those numbers. No worries.
everyone kiss sather's ASS, the backlash is gonna bite the rangers ass, this is about who wants the cup BAD ENOUGH now; not 10 yrs. from now.
No one going to pay Mcd 6-m a year & give up the picks. Not gonna happen. Brooks does this every year. Writes a column saying Rangers R vulnerable Cap probs blah blah blah....
Its not going to happen
Does anyone beside me think there might be “an understanding among all the GMs” regarding the lower cap…….buyouts…….and restricted free agents?Anyone who takes Sather’s comments literally or even figuratively should become part of the NY Hockey Media. The way Sather speaks to the NY Media is with the same disdain as Torts, except Sather coats his words with sugar.
You kids are so funny and panicky in the offseason. It really cracks me up. Fucking relax, seriously. Uncle Glen has not let us down in quite a while. He's got it under control. @KevinDeLury go have a fucking beer man, it's gonna be perfectly fine.
Sather got rid of Brian Leetch. Do you really think he cares about McDonagh? He is he worst!
What? You guys don't think Holmgren and the Flyers wouldn't take a shot at Ryan? HA, your all nutzzzzzz!!!!!!
As far Rangers, sad to say, I think this ship has sailed, I don't see better years ahead with this tired banged up team.....
Anyone want the rights to sign Ryan Clowe? Anyone? Hurry before you can sign him for free! How's this working out for you Glen?
Has McD ever given any indication that he is unhappy here? And he doesnt strike me as an egocentric, greedy player that would be willing to screw his team over to get the $ he wants.
Don't be ridiculous. If anyone forced their hand into signing McD for more than they intended then they just won't resign MZA.
But speaking of the Flyers being a pain in the ass, what is with them an announcing buyouts and signings before the official time period begins? and then the NHL acknowledges each one on their website. Pretty sure I got updates on my phone regarding Briere and Bryz before the buyout period, and an update on Lecavalier before free agency started. It's like they're more desperate to win the off-season than anything else...
Sather keeps burning through coaches and bad contracts...how many more chances is this overrated dolt gonna get...if they lose McDonagh the whole front office should be fired.
Here's what makes me nervous about how much McD is worth. Looking at the top 25 highest paid D-men in the game, all of them will be making at least $5 mil or more. Now points as a D-man obviously don't mean as much as certain defensive metrics, or other intangibles like positioning, skating ability, etc. But we know how good McD is at both of those, plus we know he's a tough son of a bitch. Out of those top 25 highest paid D-men, McDonagh had more points than 7 of them last year. Here they are, salaries included:
Jay Bouwmeester - 6.6 mil
Jason Garrison - 6.5 mil
James Wisniewski - 6 mil
Tyler Myers (HAHAHAHA) - 5.5 mil
Matt Carle - 5.5 mil
Tobias Enstrom - 5.75 mil
Braydon Coburn - 4.5 mil.
McDonagh is also younger(24) than everyone on that list except Drew Doughty(6.7mil), Myers, and Karlsson(5.5mil). I know someone can dig deeper and get some advances metrics to help his cause, but we know how good McD is. He is, in my opinion, a top 25 D-man. And he deserves to get paid like one. Which means, according to this list, he'll be making at least 5 mil a year. Only 5 players on that list make 7 mil or more (Weber, Suter, Chara, Keith, and Brian Campbell....Pronger does too, but we won't count him). So I think it's safe to say he's not worth 7 mil, at least not yet. But 6 mil? I think he and his agent can make a strong case for a deal worth 6 mil per year. I have faith that Glen won't let him walk. But McD is gonna get paid, deservedly so.
I can't see this happening. Don't forget, the higher the offer for an RFA the more draft picks are given in return. I cant see anyone overpaying for McDonagh and then giving the Rangers two 1st rd picks, a second and a third!
I tend to think Brooks needs things to write about.
I'm more bothered by that the team minus Clowe is gonna be a bit on the smurfy side...
Playing the game: If they had brought out Richards, signed Clowe and his buddy Lecavelier the team would LOOK alot tougher to play against and more well rounded with better depth. But there's that dead money the owner has to pay in that case...
Born a day after the Rangers last cup.... wouldnt it be something if this kid brought home the next cup.... Seems like an intelligent kid, Good luck Skapski!!!
I don't think the keeping richards is connected to this simply because as you stated, Sather will probably match anything up to 6 Mil and get rid of someone else (prob zuc). But the bigger question is, is McD worth a higher cap hit than Richards at his best and equal to hank and nash? I think sather would walk from 7 mil regardless of the space and in turn do whatever he can to make that GM's life miserable. McD is one of our best players PERIOD but given his age/experience, he donesn't command that kind of cash.If you need more perspective, Duncan Keith has a cap hit of 5.5 mil this season. A comparable would be Doughty whi has a cap hit of 7Mil but he was a top 3 pick...and got overpaid.
if we lose McD because of this my rangers aligence would be shaken. I could never be a fan of another team but that doesn't mean I wouldn't absolutly hate this organization while being a fan of them.
With a cap one must look at a team as a process, rather than an entity. It is a pipeline. You must have a continual influx of youth and talent in order to compensate for the fact that you simply can't hold on to all of your developed talent. You WILL and SHOULD occasionally lose players who are in their prime.
That said, there are two crimes a GM should NEVER be guilty of:
1. Don't issue long, expensive contracts to anyone over 30. It is a young man's game - doing so is crippling and should be made ONLY if you have years 28 & 29, and then only if the player is one of the top 5 players in the sport! Sather? Blew this rule up with Richards....and didn't even get out of it when he could.
2. NEEEVER give away the front end of your pipeline (top picks) for a player UNLESS you are 75% certain that it is the ONLY piece keeping you from getting a Cup. Sather blew up this rule with Clowe....made even worse given his age and the type of game he needs to play to continually be effective.
Sather is a mess. A GM must also answer to the fan base and speak to the team being a process/pipeline and showing his vision. Doing this allows the fan base to be engaged in an understanding of this and is critical for the owner's bottom line - and yes the NYR are not immune to this. Sather spent years early on hiding from ANY contact/comment. The team floundered and the local interest waned. It recovered quickly in the ONE good year he had, but now again will wane if the NYR continue to flounder.
The reason he doe not share his vision of the team, or acknowledgment of the process is almost assuredly because he does not seem to have a vision, nor understand the process. There is no other explanation and his end results confirm it. His performance has been abysmal. Look at the NYR performance under his watch!!! It is an embarrassment that he is the GM of a New York team.
If someone does offer sheet Mac for 7 million plus, they have to give us 3 first round draft picks right? I am not saying I want this to happen, but just want to make sure. And if keeping Richards costs us Mcdonagh, I wish Sather retired when he got cancer...
@ThrSage i live on planet earth, not on the outermost planet, pluto dip wit. sports is a business like a lotta cos. anything can happen, don't mean it will, just can.
@ThrSage All I said is that I bet Snow would love to stick it to the Rangers by doing so. I didn't say "they would" or "were going to." You really don't think the Islanders would love to get the upper hand on the Rangers on something? They're the little brother in this town, hoping to somehow one day overtake the Rangers. And I think they see what's happening in Brooklyn with the Nets closing the gap on the Knicks and hope to do the same.
I'm with you 1000%. I also find it kind of annoying what an expert everybody is. You'll read in the comments section, in no uncertain terms, exactly what will come to pass and what is and what is not plausible.
Nevertheless, I do like to read about the rumors, almost as much as the actual developments. It's one way to keep a little bit of hockey in my life during the off-season.
Thanks to @KevinDeLury and crew for keeping the conversation going.
@TheProspectpark Sather planning on signing DP. Says that less money will be offered to Lundqvist since he regressed by not winnig the Vezina this yeah. Yea Sather....
@Betweentheworlds If I remember correctly, that transaction should have happened, except there was a problem faxing the contract.
Don't know about the other GMs, but I would bet the house that Sather has told other GMs don't mess with my UFAs and we'll have no problems. Sather had never done an offer sheet and I don't remember any being posed to any players in Sather's tenure.
@CJ @KevinDeLury Too funny. Are you a relative of Sather's? Not let us down in quite a while? They haven't made the playoffs in 50% of the years he has been GM....in the NHL....where everyone gets in..LOL...and they have lost in the quarter finals for half of their playoff appearances.
Egad man, what does someone have to do to "let you down" boil your dog??
And I don't think anyone posting here actually sweats what the Rangers do, or what Sather does, so I don't think anyone has to relax. These are just people who want to watch some good local entertainment, but the dude at the helm of our ol' good ship ice hockey, just really sucks and can't deliver a decent product. Sooooo....being in NY we all want the prick gone, as this town is the center of the known Universe and deserves the best.
Sounds like you would be content with Roseanne Barr on the cover of Playboy. This is NY...we have standards here, son! Accountability. Let Sather produce this product in Florida - where it belongs.
Kevin, you keep it dialed in right where it is. Sather should be gone.
@cb1 *Cough* Prust *Cough*
@boogiepicker I think with McD is as great as he's been its pretty clear he's going to get even better, we haven't seen his best yet which is exciting as he11
But Sather's time is up.. Winning cures all woes, so if we win a cup this year he is a genius for all his off season moves.. but I'm still tired of him. We have barely sniffed the cup under his reign.
@_Jack My dad would tell that to me, when I start speculating.
@FREE LINDBERG That's not nice to say....but I'm with ya!
But we ARE al experts AG - that is until we're wrong. Seriously I enjoy all the speculation myself. It's fun in the offseason. My only comments here were based upon history and McD'a market value (below), but of course you never know. My Kudos as well to Kevin and staff
@MikeBlue @Betweentheworlds The Avs were a franchise in financial trouble. Smith gave Sakic a lucrative offer sheet, wone which he accepted and one as a highly skilled player he deserved thinking the Avs would never match it. The Avs however did raise the funds by reaching out to the community to keep their star alongside Foresberg and the rest of the successful franchise. In the end he got paid what he was worth, the rest of the league looked at us with disdain and Smith was exposed for the scum bag that he is. I would have loved to see Joe in blue but not by playing dirty pool. this is how I remember it anyway. It was a long time a go. The fax thing sounds more like the failed Lindros deal where we were willing to give up half our team including Leetch to obtain his rights. Lindros was an awesome prospect who became an absolute beast before the concussion but I'm glad it never happened
@AG_Blue @Betweentheworlds Well said and agreed. I enjoy reading it from the very insightful comments which teach me things a bout the sport I love to the ridiculous over the top one - I don't agree with it all and I will occasionally counter punch but I love this format where we can all express ourselves.
you're right, there are some experts, mostly coming from their love of the game, so i'm all for that; and there's often something to learn from the not-so-expert commenters, sometimes they bring an unlooked for insight. the speculation is great, and most of the people here will be proved wrong. it's part of the comings and goings of each season. and there's nothing wrong with being wrong. i just prefer to read what people think without their implications that the next guy is a fool for having their thoughts, and all the sarcasm that comes with it. i can really do without it (unless it's really funny). i don't mean to be a poor sport, and i'm not singling anyone out, it's just the way it's said sometimes. obviously i'm still here reading .......
