(2:16 PM) The St. Louis Blues have "agreed in principle" to a deal with Redden. The terms are reportedly $800K for one year. So we can put this to rest. In fact, barring a Rangers - Blues Stanley Cup matchup, we can end any hopes of seeing Redden on the visiting bench at MSG this season.
(12:34 PM) - The Colorado Avalanche website now has Mats Sundin coming out of retirement and joining the Avalanche. Somehow I do not think that's the case. Combine that with the fact that the Islanders have just claimed Pittsburgh defenseman Brian Strait (not exactly a better alternative) off waivers and it seems that this is most likely the result of the NHL websites having problems. Unfortunate, as an opportunity to watch Wade Redden limping around and taking hooking penalties on the MSG ice in an Islanders jersey would have been a fantastic sight to see.
The New York Islanders have already spent the last week or so adding everyone else's scrap bits, claiming three players off of waivers with Tim Conolly being reported as a fourth. With Wade Redden having officially been bought out by the Rangers, he is free to negotiate - and sign - with other NHL teams. And a very curious addition has been made to the Islanders official website.
The New York Islanders would make sense as a possible destination for Wade Redden. He was drafted by the Islanders 2nd overall in 1995. Signing with them would not require him to move his family. And, as professionally and amicably as I can put this, the Islanders' current group of defensemen are very poor. As such, they are one of few teams for whom adding Redden might actually be an upgrade. Nonetheless, aside from a veteran presence Redden brings very little to the table at this stage of his career. While he was a decent, albeit massively overpaid player his first couple of seasons with the Rangers, his ability has dropped off significantly the last few years to the point that his (lack of) ability AS WELL as his contract justified him being in the AHL. In fact, Redden was a healthy scratch for the Whale on a number of occasions last season.
It's hard to imagine how Redden's image and bio information ended up on the Islanders' website without a signing inevitable; though much stranger things have certainly happened. So while this very well could just be a glitch or some sort of mistake, Rangers fans can only hope that this is a sign of things to come.
Select "Team > Players > Draft"
it's not legit. you can get anyone they drafted to show up. Here's zzdeno chara:
if you go their draft history and click on a name it shows the current NHL profile for the players with the Islanders logo up top. Sorry to burst your bubble
Redden is not showing up on the Islanders' roster when I visit their site right now ... by the way, I will never visit their site again. I have this icky feeling and I think I need to go take another shower.
Maybe they want to sign him to a 7 year $8M contract so they can buy him out over the summer, just so they don't feel left out in the amnesty buy-outs.
who cares. Let's move on. He is washed up, i bet he will be -20 in +/- anywhere he sings. But would be nice if he joins the NYI so our offense can make a joke out of him.
I hope this turns out to be true.... could you imagine Nash or Gaborik abusing Redden during a game??
Adam, Redden was a member of the Islanders so they might have bios of former players on their website.
@basement cat Zzzz
@johnnyb3910 Detective Johnny B on the scene.
@Medvjed004 -- i sincerely wish him the best, especially since he showed such good character in Hartford ... and also since i don't think he can hurt our club anymore
@thenyrblogneill $8m road cone.
@KevinDeLury This linked directly from the roster page. Furthermore, Redden never actually played for the Islanders (was traded to Senators while he was in juniors) so he wouldn't be on their all-time roster.
@Herman_NYRBlog He was drafted by them, but I looked at their all time roster list and he's not there. So yeah this is very interesting.
