Rangers Showed Interest in Hjalmarsson?

Written by Kevin DeLury on .

Elliotte Friedman at Hockey Night in Canada says that he heard the Rangers had recently showed interest in the Blackhawks Niklas Hjalmarsson, but both teams said, "No sale."

Hjalmarsson, who has two years left on a four-year contract with a $3.5 million salary-cap hit, had 1g, 15a in 69 games last season.

...to be honest, I don't know much about Hjalmarsson other than he scored in the Stanley Cup finals a few years ago and he blocks a ton of shots (over 135 every year). While his shot blocking prowess may fit into Torts' game plan, a $3.5 million cap hit for just one goal a year has me more than glad to hear it didn't workout.

The cap hit is definitely a bit high but he is an excellent defensive defenseman. A shame a deal couldn't get done but our defense is not in dire need of him, either.

@Herman_NYRBlog I'm surprised the Flyers aren't throwing the kitchen sink at the Hawks for this guy.
