...assuming Rangers fans are back to thinking we're going to win the Stanley Cup after that one. Was great seeing this team play with some passion and fire again. I finally feel like the Rangers 2013 season has begun.
...having said that, still some issues with this team as they remain sloppy in their own end, can't win a faceoff and it looks like Perry Pern is still running the power play.
...so I guess Gabby's shoulder is 100%. If he can score 40 without Nash taking the pressure off him in 82 games, he might hit 40 in 48 games this year.
...what's the matter Nash? You can't finish? Absolutely Nashty tonight. Those moves were effortless.
...and after a combined 3g, 2a from Gaborik, Nash and Richards (GNR) it's time to officially name them the "Welcome to the Jungle" line. (H/T to reader GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG for the name).
...i normally give Torts a ton of crap for his constant line juggling, but credit him for replacing Kreider with Pyatt on the second line. Kreider looked lost out there tonight. Especially in the defensive end. Pyatt has been one of the Rangers better players early this season. Could fill Dubinsky's role, but actually, you know, score.
...back to Kreider. If he doesn't figure this out soon, he'll be back in Hartford.
...i told you Callahan was going to be hitting everything that moved tonight. 9 hits.
...i refuse to be concerned about Lundqvist, but man he's got to have that third one.
...you can look at the Rangers five penalties and say they remain undisciplined, but I'm sorry tonight's refs were worse than the NFL replacement guys in that Seahawks/Packers game. Almost put my foot through the TV after the Rupp penalty.
...one of the more complete games I've ever seen Staal play. He was physical, blocked shots and joined the offense. If he can keep this up he may regain his status as best defenseman on the Rangers.
...was wonderful seeing the Rangers blocking shots with a reckless abandon again tonight. Not so sure Girardi's body agrees.
...another dreadful night in the faceoff circle for Halpern (0-for-4).
...not sure who finally got a hold of Del Zotto, but he's finally hitting the net on a regular basis and the Rangers offense is benefitting from it.
...i'm sorry, the Rangers need to have a better option to fill-in at forward than Bickel.
...right back at it tomorrow night in Philly.

Going to start this off positive with a win was needed to get some confidence. Yet i still feel the D needs some much needed help. Del Zotto did help set up the first goal with a good stretch pass to Richards, but, how many times have we seen him have that pass intercepted or miss. The high risk/reward plays are not something the D need to be trying. As noted in the review he is finally hitting the net with his shot, which could really help the PP. Yet he is still very soft in the D zone which is a bit alarming considering Tort's feeling on soft play. He needs to get to the puck first and not be afraid to take a hit to make the play. If he consitantly makes first passes on the tape it will help them out tremndously. As for Staal, I am still not sold. I wan't a fan before the concussion and still am not after. To many times he gets caught trying to poke check the puck instead of just playing the body. He needs to improve his shot and decisions when he is carrying the puck. I think McDonugh gets over looked to much in regards to his offensive ability. I would much rather him running a PP unit than Del Zotto and here is why: -Better decision making -Better shot -More accurate shot -Better open ice vision -Consistant As for Girardi - Nothing really to say other then, he is the best defensive d-man in the league. Very lucky he is a Ranger Stralman - Good at his roll, you need guys like him Eminger - Can't believe he is still in the NHL Gilroy - N/A need to see him more to make judgement, but way more upside then Eminger Forwards - Richards/Nash/Gaborik is as good as advertised Callahan - all effort with some finish, can't ask for more Boyle - Big guy, good effort, needs more finish for he effort he puts in front of the net Stepan - On the right track, developing nicely Halpern/Pyatt - Good additions, will fill out the roster nicely Krieder - Don't Panic! kid is a stud will figure it out Henrik - Will be fine
@NYCFAN Nice write-up! I've never been 100% sold on Staal either. But he was money late in the playoffs last year and I really loved his game last night.
I think newbury is badly needed, guy won 60% of his draws with the rangers the past two-three years and is a great fourth line winger or center-man who can flip flop in and out with asham. Halpern, Newbury, Rupp is a lot better than having bickel there. After last nights performance in the face-off circle, something needs to be done. And I personally don't think Kreider should be in the NHL just yet, let him gain some confidence in the AHL and move up later....he's a grounded motivated kid and will work hard and not be discouraged by such a move. I think kolarik should be brought up to replace Kreider and chip in on the 3rd line. Think the team would benefit from these moves right now and in the long term as well.
Nash looked so much better then everyone on the ice for both teams, its incredible that he didnt bury anything. They have to be more disciplined, the penalties killed thier flow, even if HALF of them werent penalties. Im liking DelZ's play, hes good in the defensive zone and creating chances in the offensive zone. I like that second line of cally-step-pyatt. It was a step in the right direction but they are still sloppy and face offs and the power play is a joke. But I was happy with the win. I hope they continue their success against the flyers after a physical battle with boston. You know the flyers are gonna come out and play scummy flyers hockey , hopefully we can take advantage of them without some of their key players.
Also...Hank needs to get that 3rd one, all the other goals hes let in are all deflections IE the only way to beat him.
Bickel needs to be sent down to the Whale. I'd rather have Haley in there than him. And why wasn't Asham dressed?
@scrangersfan -- "Welcome to the Jungle," song by Guns'n'Roses, aka GNR, GNR= Gaborik, Nash, Richards
I am partial to the RaNGers Line or even if a misnomer: The GRIND line. Gaborik Richards Insert Nash Done
Tonight's game would be the equivalent to a 4 game pre-season. So with these players being such creatures of habit I could see where Hank might take another half a week to be truly in season mode! I won't be upset unless in a few weeks he having games like these first 3 consistently.
I love our top line. You always feel like we are dangerous with them out there. I love Pyatts game so far. He's big and physical and shows poise under pressure. Hags looked like a world class speedster again, and I'm giving him credit on that goal that got waived off because it was a snipe!!! Cally was so much fun to watch too! He's just a warrior!!! LGR take Philly to the woodshed tonight!!!
So following Bruin blogger statistical analysis and logic, based on this one game the Rangers will finish the season 45-0, outscoring their opponents 180-135. Gaborik will score 135g but the team will fail to score another PPG.
Much much better boys. Not perfect.. but much much better. Now they need to work on clearing the zone.
@Van_Ness_WVU Interesting. Assuming that means Asham is out again tomorrow.
@KevinDeLury @Van_Ness_WVU Of course it's Newbury. Surely we'll see him on the ice, then fight a guy, then in the penalty box...and then we never see him again. Wish it coulda been Miller or, hell, Mashinter.
@JoshKaye @Van_Ness_WVU I don't think Kreider has punched his ticket yet. Tomorrow will be huge for him.
@KevinDeLury I'm more concerned with our D Men not clearing the crease, letting dudes whack away at rebounds 3 or 4 times while Hank is scrambling... those guys should be laid out or at the very least tied up. Hank is fine.
@KevinDeLury no....there have been a bunch of goals early but there have been a high number of goals that were deflected...the third goal tonight he seemed to be screen by hagelin. The defense was shaky at best the first 2 games i.e. staal not picking up lucic in the first game and deciding not to cover james neal who was wide open in the slot
@Van_Ness_WVU @KevinDeLury I thought he was a bit screened too but didn't get a good look at it. Not really concerned about him at all. I feel that the more starts he gets the more he gets into a rhythm and the stronger he becomes.
@Van_Ness_WVU Agreed, was just wondering what fans were thinking. Had a few people tweet me about how shaky he's been.
@AnnoyingJoe he's got to hold on to those rebounds. They will kill him.
@KevinDeLury @Van_Ness_WVU he's fighting the puck a little, no doubt, but he'll b fine
@KevinDeLury so i think lundqvist is the least of the rangers problem...he has made some unbelievable saves already
Cally Step Pyatt may end up being a great surprise for us. The three of them seemed to be on the same page and they just looked solid. I also really liked Hags Boyle Rupper. Rupp, aside from that awful penalty, looked not as old, and Hags getting down there for the forecheck seemed to take pressure off of Boyle and Rupp, giving them some time to get into the offensive zone. As for Gabby Richie Nash...well...that speaks for itself.
Just a thought. I like Bickel since he can fight. But aside from that he's pretty worthless. Eminger in his limited time didn't look awful. If Asham is out for a few more games, I say we make Bickel a healthy scratch and maybe try Gilroy as a forward. A line of Kreider Halpern Gilroy doesn't exactly sound exciting or terrifying to anyone, but when I think of Gilroy at forward I think of him in the playoffs a couple of years ago when he seemed to be the only one generating any sort of offense against the Caps. It's just a thought, and while it's not the long term solution, I think it could at least be something interesting to consider.
@JoshKaye "...when I think of Gilroy at forward I think of him in the playoffs a couple of years ago when he seemed to be the only one generating any sort of offense against the Caps." Thank you for remembering that! He was the only player hustling his ass of in that game (if not series).
@KevinDeLury @_Jack @JoshKaye I know I'm the minority here, but I didn't think Kreider was that bad! He put a big check on to get the bruins out of our zone (something our top line couldn't do) and his line had a scoring chance. I think some sweet nothing's from Torts could go a long way with this kid. Easy up on him Torts!
@JoshKaye Torts is already talking about sending Kreider back to AHL after the game tonight. Miller?
@KevinDeLury @JoshKaye You really think Miller is ready? Kreider needs to find himself. That hit might have taken more out of him than he's willing to say -drop him to the 4 th line for a game but don't send him home after 3 or 4 games
@KevinDeLury Yeah I'm not surprised about that. If he's not looking good and if he's only gunna use him for 7-8 minutes a night, send him back down where he'll play 15-20. Him being on the ice is better than him being on the bench.
Testy on here after a big win,eh? They beat a good team tonight in their best effort of the season, let's be happy with that. Yes, still a lot of work to do but there is a lot of promise (my god Nash is dirty). PP certainly needs work, must take care of puck better in our zone and there has been some poor passing, but we're on the board. Im pumped.
Exciting game tonight that should not have gone to OT. We kept letting them back in the game and I'm sure Torts is going to be barking about puck support in our end. Great to see Gaborik with a hat trick. And Nash - what moves for a guy that size he's making good players look stupid and I expect that to continue. Granted we need to be better defensively. Not a fan of 5 forwards on the 5-3 at least keep Staal on the blueline for support. Looking forward to Philly game
Wow, I know things aren't perfect but lots of criticisms after a win. I actually really liked the chemistry Call-Step-Pyatt had.
