Looks like Ryan Callahan, Ryan McDonagh and Derek Stepan are going to see some familiar faces in Sochi, as four more Rangers will be headed to the Olympics.
Henrik Lundqvist and Carl Hagelin were named to Team Sweden, Rick Nash to Team Canada, while Mats Zuccarello was the only NHLer selected to Norway's Olympic team.
...Nash is the only controversial pick. Especially when you consider players such as St. Louis and Girioux were left off the team. Despite his lackluster first half of the season, you have to assume Nash was selected due to past performances in international competition.
...my hope with Nash, who seems to be coming around a bit lately, is that he goes to Sochi and regains his confidence while competing with some of the best players in the World. While I'm always going to be worried about the negative impact or possible hangover the Olympics can have on players, in Nash's case I feel the experience could jump start his season with the Rangers.
...Lundqvist is Team Sweden's guy, but I wonder if he falters in the first game, if the coach would turn to Gustavsson, who has been solid for Detroit this season.
...finally, it really is a shame not to see Staal on Team Canada. Without the concussion and eye issues that have plagued him the last few years, you would think he'd have been a lock for the team. Feel real bad for him today.
I know its late.... but me only being 19 years old... Crosby (when healthy) is the best hockey player I have ever seen... He is so clutch it hurts too. Unbelievable how automatic he is, and how strong he is when it matters most. What he did tonight to the Canucks shows that. Fuck I hate Cindy.
I'm at SFA waiting on my flight to Kona catching up on some Rangers news here at my favorite one stop Blueshit ( uh shirt) update site, . Won't be seeing games for a while as they start at 2pM on the island. I was going to say "what is he crazy?" When reading your comment about Nash till I read that St. Louis was left off. Hmm, intresting decision but those boys up north always seem to have some agenda? Wonder why they wouldn't want the leagues leading scorer netting some for Canada?
anyone else catch this article on Kreider? i know he's been pretty great lately but i didn't expect this.
Just dumbfounded that 40% of our NHL roster is headed to the Olympics, yet we can't get more than a game over .500.
That's gotta say something about someone. Either: (a) our GM thinks we're in the KHL or the Swedish Elite League, (b) the other 12 guys on our roster REALLY suck, or (c) our coach is a complete moron.
i dont know if anyone caught this but former Ranger Petr Nedved made the Czech Republic team...
Once sather sees nash flourish in the olympics with a center who can actually set him up/ open up space, hopefully he looks to bring one over to the rangers. ( granted they wont be as good as stamkos crosby tavares or towes)
what pisses me off about ranger fans is we sit here and bash our guys for having no heart and no toughness, then with a guy like nash and staal obviously playing through injury we get on them because they suck. People will defend lundquist till the cows come home and make no mention of how torts system DESTROYED the bodies of the guys in front of him--and how krieder and zucc couldnt see the ice for torts but i digress--now guys arent laying down in front of bullets 20 times per night and the king has to actually make some saves and he cant do it. then he throws his tantrums. enough already. Play cam and give the king a little humility and a chance to work his core enough to keep his body upright one time. And im sooo sick of the 'hero bashing" We hated lindros when he was a point a game guy. Hated holik and his grit at 20 plus goals. We booed jagr last year which is friggen beyond me and half you clowns couldnt wait to get rid of gaborik who scored 100 goals in 3 years. STFU. Messier aint walking through that door. Graves aint walkin through that door. Nash is playing with shit centers and no threat off wing. every time he gets the puck in the offensive zone he gets molested and becuase hes big no calls. AV should do with Nash what Oates did with ovechkin and move him to his stick side. Play nash at LW where he can shield the defense, use his size and attack the net. If youre not going to play him with krieder play him with miller so his speed can open up the ice. You need to make the game easier for your best players, not bash them every chance you get. we just hate people who make a lot of money? YOU'D RATHER DOLAN AND SATHER KEPT IT?! thank god the commentors on this blog dont run the team. pouliot would have been gone. hank would have gotten 10mm/year. richards and nash would be sold for pennies on the dollar and we's have a first line of chris Neil, ian laperriere and colton orr.
Nash's international experience (two Olympics and two stints overseas during the lockouts) really saved him on this one.
Feel bad for Staal, but I don't think it was a huge surprise for him that he didn't get selected with all Team Canada had to choose from. That last concussion probably sealed the deal on that one.
On a non-NYR note....really, really feel bad for St. Louis as this was basically his last shot to make an Olympic team.
@TheNYRBlog ^ what he said about hank. More worried about him, cus he's not injured. (that we know)
I was listening to NHL radio this morning on XM and a lot of people are upset about the Nash selection. They claim he's a soft player now. No longer plays fearless. They likened him to (wait for it...) Lindros when he came to the Rangers.... (oy).Yet another reason to put a bruiser on Nash's line so he knows someone has his back.
@TheNYRBlog more worried about hank
@KreiderisTheChosenOne He is good, no doubt... but hockey is a team sport, so we should concentrate on getting all our guys playing to their full potential and working as a team... them we can kick his butt... What do you think?
Nash is so strong on the bigger ice in international play. And he has a past history... top 5 player for Canada last time around
I can't seem to start a new topic, so I have to piggybank on Betweentheworlds post.... well, I'm watching the Leafs vs. Islanders now... Bernier just let in one of the worst goals I've ever seen... check it out... Leafs on the power play, Bernier badly misplays the puck... voila, Grabner scores! Leafs defence - Gardiner and Franson look awful... maybe they are the wrong pairing... or maybe they are still suffering from the Winter Classic hangover but jeeeeez, maybe we can get them BOTH for Del Zotto... then I'm listening.
Or... the Olympics suck.... or the Olympic teams where we are supplying players suck.... or other teams in the NHL all have about 40% or more of their roster on the Olympics.. or, yes, (c) (b) above!
Kevin, you are right. I think in the last game Nash was showing signs of his old pre-concussion self. If he continues to regain confidence in his power game, he will be his old unstoppable self. Hopefully the Olympics accelerate his "mental recovery" so when he returns to the Rangers, he will be a beast again.
@BringBackBeukeboom Aiyaaaaaaaa! Brevity, BBB, brevity please!!!
@BringBackBeukeboom Nash's issue is lack of confidence... a bit tentative for fear of getting injured again.... That is my guess.
@BringBackBeukeboomOne Stanley Cup in 74 years gives every Rangers fan the right to complain about whatever they want.
@BringBackBeukeboom God damn! You make me want to put on my Beuke jersey and just start punching people!
@1NYN8V I think true hockey fans know that St. Loius is an awesome player and deserves all the accolades afforded an NHL superstar... still, I agree with you... sad that he did not make the team, because frankly he deserves to.
@3Blackeyes @TheNYRBlog Yes, NYR BLOG! I agree 100%... Hank is NOT playing like the Hank of old... he is very "average" with glimpses of brilliance, as opposed to brilliant all around all the time.... I fear he may have lost a step... I hope he is not in the same boat as Brad Richards, who I am VERY worried about.
@GiveGartneraCup GiveGarneraCup, this is what I have been proclaiming for days now.... I believe Nash LACKS CONFIDENCE. He has lost a step, because now he is "hearing steps!" Shall we put Carcillo or Dorsett [when healthy] on a line with Nash, if just for a few games... just for Nash to Rightsize his mental maps????
@KreiderisTheChosenOne I have the highest hopes for Nash... Hank and Brad Richards concern me the most.... I fear they are simply getting old... Father Time has caught up with them... for Richards, this has been accelerated by the injury he sustained at the hands of Kaleta.... for Hank... well, you can't stop the clock, can you.... :-(
@KreiderisTheChosenOneI'm really hoping so. As I said above, I'm usually so worried about Rangers players in the Olympics, but I think it could really help those two.
@_JackSweden is pretty stacked. No way he was making the team. In four years?...
Well the Olympics definately don't suck. The 2.5 weeks of Olympic Hockey typically rivals the Stanley Cup Finals as far as level of competition and TV Ratings.
And we've got 5 players playing for the US and Sweden, two favorites in the tournament, although you could argue that Canada, the odds on favorite, only took one of our players, based purely on previous international play, totally unrelated to NYR Hockey.
As far as other NHL teams, there are a few that have 5+ players going, but sending more players to smaller countires like Russia, Czech Republic, etc.
actually 6 of our players are on the top 3 teams in the World
@johnnyb3910@JoeyKocur or that the majority of our players that are going have been under performing and are going to the Olympics based on past performances.
That being said it's a flawed roster that management built anyway, not enough toughness to compete physically with top teams and there's not really enough skill. In my mind management needs to figure out the direction of the team. Will they be a tough defensive team that tries to grind out wins 2-1. Or will they be a skilled team that tries to utilize speed and puck possession to win games.
@Kevin DeLuryNothing, I was just wondering if you ever tried The Macallan, this stuff is purely amazing! And is the Johnnie Walker of yours, did you opened it :) ?
Not a huge fan, but I've got a couple of bottles of Johnnie Walker in my house I break into every once in awhile. Why?
@GiveGartneraCup@Kevin DeLury@KreiderisTheChosenOneLivefyre asked if you could e-mail them with your issue:
. The guy who I was dealing with is Jeremy. Let me know.
