Depth Not a Problem For Rangers...Wait, What?

Written by Kevin DeLury on .

Neil Greenberg at ESPN Insider feels the Rangers might have better depth than people think...

"Looking at the underlying numbers for the other forwards, the Rangers' supporting cast appears to be generating the effort, just not reaping the rewards. For instance, in 2011-12, secondary scorer Derek Stepan generated 1.5 even-strength shots per game and was on the ice for 25.5 even-strength shots per 60 minutes. This season he is generating 1.7 even-strength shots by himself and is part of a line that generates 28.9 even-strength shots per 60. The difference? Puck luck. Last season, Stepan converted on 9 percent of his own even-strength shots; this season, he has yet to hit the twine. His line converted 9.4 percent last season but has converted just 5.1 percent so far this season."

Greenberg says this also goes for Carl Hagelin and Taylor Pyatt.

...i really don't understand the correlation between three players' shots per game increasing and how that helps the Rangers depth. The Rangers just filled Ryan Callahan and Chris Kreider's spots with Stu Bickel and Matt Gilroy!!!! You call that depth?

...a much better article would be to discuss how CT Whale players such as Newbury, Segal and Mashinter shouldn't be undersold and could be assets in a John Tortorella system. Or that JT Miller is progressing faster than anticipated  I'm completely dumbfounded by this article.

Torts only likes bickel to make an example of him... i heard he likes to put bicks fingers in the sharpener during periods for motivation

Like I asked Kevin on twitter: is there no depth because they aren't scoring or are they not scoring because there is no depth?

i don't understand why we haven't either called someone up or looked at free agents, we have 2 players injured, oh that's right we can use bickel as a fwd, smh

I'm for bringing Avery back! Maybe he can annoy Brodeur more!

its tough to bring guys like mashinter up, because if they want to send them back down they can be claimed by other teams.

Remember the days when ESPN actually cared about hockey and had semi-decent articles? No? Me neither.

Speaking of Mashinter though, I wouldn't mind seeing him at some point. I feel like if there were any moment to give him a try, it would be now with Cally injured.
