Are the Rangers Getting a Dance Team?

Written by Kevin DeLury on .

First there was the "Girls' Guide to Watching Rangers Hockey", now apparently a Facebook page has popped up for the purpose of securing support to create a New York Rangers Dance team named the Rangerettes. Here's the first Facebook entry...

"My intentions to start this team are to motivate the crowd at home games, be public figures for all Ranger fans, hold fundraisers blood drives and other money raising functions for the blue shirts and to hold clinics for younger girls and boys ( noones excluded) to dance and show support for the team they love! SHOW YOUR BLUE SHIRT PRIDE AND HELP ME GET THIS STARTED :) I want to do it all for NYR"

The page currently has 605 "likes" and is in the process of organizing try-outs.

This wouldn't be the first female entertainment at Rangers games, as many of us remember the City Skaters, who were disbanded back in 2007, after MSG had to settle a sexual harrassment suit with one of the ice girls.

...from what I can gather from the page, the Rangers have absolutely no affiliation with this potential dance team.

...while I appreciate the enthusiasm and I never turn down the opportunity to watch an attractive female dance in front of me (anyone have a couple of singles for me?), this seems very minor leaguish. If you need a prime example, see Islanders ice girls.

From NYR email: Thanks for contacting the New York Rangers. We are aware of this Facebook issue. We can assure you that the organization has no plans of having a dance team. That era came and went nearly a decade ago. Sincerely, New York Rangers

This has to be one of the worst ideas I've ever seen.

I sure hope not...I e-mailed MSG w/ the link. Has to be THE WORST idea ever!! THERE IS NO DANCING in hockey. Last thing I wanna see prancing around MSG is that!! I'm wondering if it's some perv trying to get girls to send in pix of themselves for OTHER reasons...

We don't need gimics, this isn't the Coliseum. F*ck that. I'm good with the Potvin whistle. Motivate the crowd? We had that. His name was Sean Avery.  It's bad enough we got Larry doing his thing. This isn't Shea either, you wanna start doing the Wavetoo?! Horeshit. This is Original Six Rangers Hockey. We don't want it and we sure as hell don't need it.

Please Please Please say it ain't so. Every time I go to the rock and see those dancers, all I can think of is total cheese.

No thank you! First off, our team does not need gimmicks to get the fans into the arena OR excited about the game. Secondly, based on current ticket prices and the very well-known Garden of Dreams Foundation, the NY Rangers organization needs absolutely zero help in the fundraising department. Tell this person to contact the Knicks!

Maybe the Rangers could hire Paula Abdul to be the coach and Sather could send Rupp, Stajcer, and a first rounder to the Wayons Brothers for the right to negotiate with the In Living Color Fly Girls.  The maybe we could have them in cages above the ice like the 60's go-go dancers used to do!  Aye Carumba!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the Rangers have "ice girls" at some point until one of them was sexually harassed and now they're gone?  We're talking like way back in 2003.

I don't like these kind of gimicks. The Garden is loud enough, people go to watch hockey not dime pieces shaking it. Also I don't think this is the kind of thing I'd want my kid to see (if I was a parent). Some teams are above this kind of stuff, and the Rangers are one of those teams.

Only if there's an incentive program for the players to get it in. Five-hole!

For the love of Pete, NO! I'm a female fan, and I think it's a horrible idea! Are they supposed to distract us from the pp? Ugh!

No.  Please no.  I definitely do not want this.  The Stars have a dance team and it's the saddest, cheesiest, most non-hockey thing ever.  I get that most hockey fans are straight guys who want to look at hot chicks (no issue there), but this will suck.  Original Six teams should have neither mascots nor dance teams (although I do love Bailey from the Kings).

@queensbee The Bruins have both a mascot and a dance team/ice girls. I agree, its minor league-ish. It belongs in areas where the product on the ice isnt enough to create buzz and draw a crowd for the games or the extra events. But at this point I've never seen a game or a fundraiser or a Q&A session that had an empty seat.

Kevin, I think there's better things you can do with your time other than looking for Rangers female dance troupes on facebook.... haha
