The Meaning of "Rangers Hockey"

Written by Kevin DeLury on .

Here's Ryan McDonagh after last night's 3-0 loss to the Penguins (via Blueshirts United)...

“We're not happy with this one. It just wasn't typical Rangers hockey.”

While it wasn't typical "Rangers hockey" compared to last season, it sure as hell typical of this season.

So just in case you forgot what "Rangers Hockey" means, I'll remind you:

It means outworking your opponent.

It means doing things the "right way."

It means a tenacious forecheck.

It means clutch scoring.

It means making your opponent fight for every inch of the ice.

It means sticking up for your teammate.

It means doing the little things.

It means playing for the greatest fans in the world.

It means digging down deep.

It means having enough "jam."

It means not being intimidated.

It means somehow, someway getting a body part in front of a shot from the point.

It means respecting the Rangers traditions and history.

It means being in top physical shape.

It means flying all over the ice.

It means playing like Ryan Callahan.

It means being as determined to win as Henrik Lundqvist.

It means ice bags after the game.

It means getting back on defense.

It means playing for 60 minutes.

In other words, it means playing like this...

I'm equally disappointed by the loss as I am with their lack of balls. How can you let a team come into your house and shut you out without dropping the gloves at some point? Rupp, Asham and Bickel are useless if they're not going to intimidate. It's got nothing to do with the new line getting used to each other, that will come, they will score. But in a game like this, if you don't send a message that you're going to take this, then you might as well not even show up. I'm so fed up right now.

It means put your stick on the puck. It means don't get down on your luck. Our team did NEITHER and it's ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING

It means getting a Power Play to work.. OH wait that has never happened. The Garden needs to get some love back into it. It was a transformation all right. It went from louder than any other arena to you can hear the crickets chirping!

And for what its worth everyone's home fans blow now. At the moment  I'm convinced the only place that still "gets it" is Winnipeg

@malkincookies MSG has been brutal for a while now. Real fans have been priced out. All corporate.

@KevinDeLury It's the same way at CEC, all the corporate big wigs buying up the good tickets and then making zero noise during the game. I remember the good old days at Mellon Arena...

Not for nothing but the "greatest fans in the world" need to step their asses up even more than the Rangers do.  It was PATHETIC how quiet the Garden was last night, at least from what I can hear on TV (I am not one of the fortunate season ticket holders).  And I don't want to hear crap that the fans need something to get excited about.  Your New York Rangers are playing for you, if that's not enough for you to get out of your seats and cheer then sell your tickets and stay home!  Players feed off the energy of the fans and there was ZERO energy last night coming from the rafters.  Wake the eff up Garden!!!  It's supposed to be hard for other teams to come to the Garden to play.  Booing Cindy every time he touches the puck is funny, but it does NOTHING for your team!  Come ON!!!

@gravey94 Every year the MSG gets quieter and quieter. Nothing is more depressing than a quiet Garden.

 @gravey94

I was at the NYR/TOR game last week.  Honestly the most quiet I've heard the Garden since I started going to Rangers games.  It really is unfortunate that the true fans have been priced out.

@not_Yanni I can't call him what I normally do out of respect for Kevin's blog.  You're right though, Cindy is not appropriate, Sidney is a much more manly name.  Besides, I know more than 1 Cindy that could beat the whine out of him so it's not fair to them.
