No Update on Del Zotto

Written by Kevin DeLury on .

The Rangers gave no update (shocker) on Michael Del Zotto's injury that forced him to the leave the game with nine minutes remaining after getting crunched along the boards by Marc Methot.

Del Zotto looked to be favoring his lower body and went to the locker room after being examined on the bench.

...while I'm sure no one wishes injury on a player, I can't imagine too many Rangers fans would be crying if Del Zotto was forced to miss a couple of games.

...could be a blessing in disguise as Del Zotto has been especially brutal lately and could probably use some time in the press box just watching.

MDZ missed a wide open net on a Rick Nash pass vs Islanders in OT, and last night he missed a wide open net right above the crease

MDZ averages 20+ minutes of ice per night.  Sure Eminger looks OK when he plays and I like Gilroy, but you put those guys in at 20+ minutes per game and I'm betting the blog will be blowing up with calls for the Rangers to get a legit defenseman.  MDZ has his shortcomings for sure, but there's no way that he can be adequately replaced by Gilroy, Eminger, or Bickel.  And you can be damn sure that Torts is not going to have the confidence to give those guys MDZ's ice time, whihc mean the top 4 will be playing close to 25 minutes per game, if not more.  This would be a very large loss if he were out for any length.

@gravey94 Agree with everything you're saying, but I think he may need to take a step back for a game and figure out what he needs to be better on pp. Too many turnovers at the blueline, not holding pucks in, shots wide.

@KevinDeLury Don't get me wrong, I would love to see him sit on the bench to watch how a PP should be run, but losing him for the entire game as opposed to 3-4 minutes per game is a big blow.  Besides, who is he going to learn from sitting and watching?  Rangers have nobody that's an effective point man.  He needs to find his own Chubbs that can counsel him on being a better PP QB...LOL!

@gravey94 @KevinDeLury happy!!!

@TheNYRBlog add to that, his current points (7) would equal 35-36 across 82 games.you want more than 35-40 points from your D?

@Rangerfan41 I think most of the venom towards DZ has to do with pp futility in which he's supposed to be quarterbacking.

This is no blessing.  We our already thin on defense, and regardless of how he has played he is our number 5 defenseman.  He just shouldn't be on the PP.

@TheNYRBlog DZ not been bad defensively part of why he is a + player.is having his best year in all 3 zone play.the past doesn't matter

@TheNYRBlog if the NYR were in position to lose a top 4 D I would agree. Amazing how much heart this team has lost. Richards is shot already

@TheNYRBlog yep he needs some time off. I think this entire team needs to get wasted they are playing too tight

@TheNYRBlog he just looks lost. In between on defense and offense. I blame him for 1st goal, he gotta fight for that puck

@TheNYRBlog This DZ bashing is getting out of hand More goals, assists, +/- and obv points than Dan Girardi who makes mistakes also

@mobilope @TheNYRBlog he has 1 more point than G who missed 2 games ... and LESS points than Marc Fucking Staal

@mobilope I'm not saying trade him or anything, but, seriously, what is Del Zotto actually bringing to the table right now?

@TheNYRBlog My point is call out all players or none done hate on the 1 its trendy to hate on

@TheNYRBlog More points & shots that hit the net than DG? Im not bashing DG Im just saying all players make mistakes & hating on 1 is wrong

@TheNYRBlog Did say he should. Saying other players shouldnt which a lot of ppl are doing

@mobilope Doesn't mean he should be given a pass. Having said all that, I still love his potential.

@TheNYRBlog and really, since when have the NYR had a good pp? '97-'98 maybe?

@mobilope +/- are misleading plus I think most of the venom towards DZ has to do with pp futility in which he's supposed to b quarterbacking

@TheNYRBlog and defensively he was 3 on the team in +/- last season with a +20 behind McDonagh and Hags

mobilope
mobilope

@TheNYRBlog 2nd in points among the D and he is 22. Most Dmen excluding the super elite aren't even in the league at his age

@mobilope More expected offensively from DZ. Because we all know what he is defensively.

Disagree. I wouldn't be happy about it. Yes, he hasn't been great recently but fans need to realize him out would make the third pair Gilroy and Bickel or Eminger (when they bring him back). I can't see Torts giving them ice time so that's roughly 20 min a night that needs to be covered by the other four. Good luck with that.

@KevinDeLury He made the pass on the PP goal against the Caps (and yes I realize that was three games ago). I haven't been paying attention to him closely but I feel safe in saying he's bringing more than Gilroy is or Bickel/Eminger could. I don't disagree he could use a game or two in the press box but we don't really have any options right now to replace him. That's all I was saying.

@KevinDeLury You may feel that way but I don't think Torts agrees. If Torts was willing to let them play, then fine but I just don't see that happening. Might not have a choice though if he's actually hurt.

@Melissa (blknblueshirts) I'd be more than comfortable with a third pair of Gilroy/Eminger for a few games while Del Zotto watched. Actually I think Gilroy should be getting some PP time.
