Rangers 2012 second round pick Cristoval 'Boo' Nieves was named the Central Collegiate Hockey Association's "Rookie of the Week" for scoring twice, including the game-winning goal, and adding one assist in the University of Michigan's Friday night (Feb. 1) 3-2 victory over Michigan State. He then added one goal and one assist in Saturday's 5-2 victory also over MSU.
Here's legendary Michigan coach Red Berenson on Nieves...
"He's a really dynamic skater. He can just take off and leave everyone behind. He's got that burst of speed with him, and he's got the skills to go with it."
Nieves is tied for 11th in overall scoring, second in freshman points (7-14-21) and tied for seventh in overall assists (14) in the CCHA. He is also Michigan's team leader in overall (7-14-21) and conference points (8-9-17). His .149 shot percentage (seven goals on 47 shots) also leads the Wolverines in that individual category.
...dynamic skater from Michigan? Sounds like someone else on the Rangers. Hopefully this Nieves kid is a better finisher though.
...got to love the next wave of Rangers prospects already starting to make a name for themselves.
Speaking of prospects, Leslie Treff at Hockey's Future takes a look at the plethora of home grown talent in the Rangers minor league system.
@BrendyJohnson Hagelin speed with a scoring touch.
