According to Andrew Gross at the Bergen Record, Rick Nash, who did not practice today, will not accompany his teammates on their trip to face the Ottawa Senators tomorrow night.
Gross adds that the team hasn't ruled out that Nash could meet-up with them in Montreal for the game Saturday night.
John Tortorella was obviously not very forthcoming with injury details (via Rangers on Twitter)...
"everyone has injuries, so you just have to play...Nash is a big part of our team, but he's out"
...what's one thing you never want a player with a concussion to do? You better believe it's fly. Just ask Ryan Church.
...this is getting worse by the minute.
Arron Asham was also absent from practice.
...what the hell is he getting the day off for?
another reason the groin story doesn't make any sense is because Nash missed a team event last week due to "illness". That's what got the whole concussion story started. Hate to say it, but seems clear it's a concussion now.
Rangers were 6-2-1 before their nap yesterday, so let's try to avoid blowing up the team. Whatever this injury is to Nash, it just means that others need to step up their games. Maybe this is what Gabby and Richards need to get going. They're 6 points out of the EC top spot, it's not panic time. Take deep breaths!
@TheNYRBlog you got that right. BTW why can't Rangers just come out an state it. Not a crime to be injured.
I just don't think they would even risk having him fly to Montreal, you know? Even if he had a concussion and wakes up feeling 100% I don't get why they would even have that be a possibility for him to fly to Montreal and play. It'd be different if it was a home game, at least to me.
This Rangers team needs a grit and toughness transfusion. The lack of grit and toughness is already having an effect....Nash's injury. Nash has been hit hard and run at in several games. I've seen several other Ranger players throughout this season be crushed on the boards, take sticks to mouth and head...etc. If this soft play continues, Nash won't be the only skilled player missing time.
If Mashinster can play...I would love to see him skate on third line with Boyle. Two big boys...crushing guys on the boards. Making opponents pay in the corners.
If Mashinster can play on the third line, I would then want Michael Haley called up and play on the fourth line with Asham. Haley is extremely high energy...and that kind of play is infectious.....and let's not forget the toughness he brings to the table.
And please....get Kreider the heck out of here. Mashinster took the body more on three shifts then Kreider has done all year. Kreider is soft and is clueless where he is on the ice.
I'm at the point right now that I don't care if Nash and Powe are out. If Torts wants to wake this team up, bench a combination of the following for one game: Richards, Gaborik or Del Zotto. Soft .. Soft and Soft! Also, enough of Torts' mind games. Top 9 forwards, when all healthy, should be Richards, Gaborik, Nash, Hagelin, Stepan, Pyatt, Callahan, Kreider and Miller. Your 4th line forwards you can pick from Boyle, Powe, Asham, Halpern and Mashinter. One more point, why is Gilory in the lineup? Oh .. That's because we have no legitimate 6th dman. Please go get one that is big, mean and can clear the front of the net and isn't a liability. That's my rant for the day! LGR!
He may join the team in Montreal for Saturday. If he had a concussion they wouldn't even have made it a possibility that he could fly to Montreal one day later.
Ugg, well we have a choice here
1) Rally as a team and find ways to win
2) Mid season slump (one that cannot be afforded)
@kevindelury Beginning to be really worried here.. And oh, how the hell are the Habs number one in EC?
all the super stars come here and get a fat check and retire ... Where is that pride to play for ny bring us back too the 94 era a team that had heart
I hate to say this, but this reeks of Staal situation last year. Remember when there were rumors he was going to join team in western Canada at start of year? That's what I hear when they say "maybe he'll come to Montreal". I don't like the way this looks...
Since this trip seems like a lost cause even before it's begun, you think they can represent the US while in Canada with an American NCAA guys power play? It could feature Kreider, Boyle, Stepan, McDonagh, and Gilroy, with Halpern on for Stepan just to start and take some faceoffs?
Torts had meeting with team before practice as well. Hopefully it wasn't to tell them they'll be without Nash for awhile.
This next game is important. We saw how we looked without Nash. It was awful. Torts called the team out for it. How will they react? Will they come out swinging or will it be another...awful, awful game? I think Boyle steps it up, getting the chance to see an old friend of his: Chris Neil. I'm never one who wants to see Boyle fight, but I think that could happen.
@TheNYRBlog @TheWrage you also can't fly if you have the Bends ... Maybe he was taking Scuba lessons and screwed up
@gravey94 Did they really look like a Stanley Cup contender in any of those games? A third of the season is gone; it's not over reacting anymore.
grit and toughness. defined them last year. This year they couldn't be more different.
@Mcphee21 I agree somewhat with you said. I like Kreider and think he would be just fine if they just let the kid play. But if they're not going to then yes .. send him down so he gets more playing time. I do like your idea for toughness but I hate Boyle as the third line center. Actually, I don't like Boyle in the lineup period. How about this for an idea -- Third line of Miller centering Cally and Powe (when he comes back .. hopefully!). Until then, put Mashinter on the 3rd line. 4th line of Halpern centering Asham and Haley.
@Mcphee21 torts has no idea what he has in mashinter so he won't get his chance for awhile, definitely not on the third line.
@TruBluEsp Gilroy has been solid as the sixth defenseman on this team. He has been getting better defensively and is above average offensively. I have more trust in him than any previous sixth defenseman we've had recently. I wish Bickel could play with confidence and show he can do something on offense, but that doesnt seem to be happening with him getting no play time here or the AHL
@chrisD Well put
@KevinDeLury if it was then it should have gone like this. "Has anyone seen Richards or Gaborik recently, cause They haven't been around for awhile? If you see them will you tell them we have a game tomorrow and on Saturday and we kind of need them to show up. Thanks guys, now lets practice."
@JoshKaye Boyle would get pounded by Neil. Boyle can't fight to save his life.
@slapshot13j Where are you seeing he's out indefinitely/long time?
@slapshot13j They haven't ruled out the Montreal game, so let's not get too crazy. Yet.
@GraigGiuliani @gravey94 they have looked pretty damn good in some games. did the kings look like a stanley cup contender 82 games into the season last year? the devils? the giants two super bowl runs? were 6 points out of 1st through 15 games. come talk to me bout being a cup contender when we miss the playoffs or are eliminated its about when you peak, if they start to peak in game 35 and get into the playoffs watch out
Playing time with the big club isn't going to help Kreider. It's not his wrist shot or speed that's the problem. He is clueless when he doesn't have the puck. He takes awful routes to the puck, which leads him to be out of position, which leads other players to be out of position...it's a ripple effect. He's a liability when he's on the ice. If I can see this....I'm sure Torts is sick of seeing in practice and the games. Kreider lacks hockey awareness and instinct. Now add the fact that Kreider is SOFT as well. He needs to get sent down asap.
@TruBluEsp Yeah I know, but I'm sure Boyler wants to get a few punches in on that pain in the ass, especially after that hit.
@TruBluEsp just the thought of it I mean...
@KevinDeLury I know but I just get a feeling this isn't the Dan Girardi-esque groin injury. And it's making me nervous. I also think torts has gone too far on not telling the media what the injury is
@TruBluEsp ...You really want to bring the power play up in this conversation? Because Torts would rather have Del Zotto out there. The real question as far as the power play goes is why don't we see McD out there? Del Zotto had 3:23 on the power play. The two after him were Girardi with 19 seconds and Stralman with 18 seconds.
