Miller & Mashinter Recalled; Ferrieri Re-Assigned
Written by Kevin DeLury on .
BREAKING: The #NYR have recalled JT Miller and Brandon Mashinter from @ctwhale, & reassign Benn Ferriero to the Whale
— New York Rangers (@NYRangers) February 4, 2013
...looks like the Rangers were reading my "Mashinter Watch." While his call-up doesn't surprise me, the Miller one does. Just reading recent tweets from Rangers website beat writer Jim Cerny, I thought organization felt he wasn't ready, but his play with the Whale this season cannot be ignored.
...i've said it numerous times on the blog, Miller's two-way game is perfect for Torts' system. He proved with the Whale he can play with men, but the NHL is a whole other animal. Really excited to see him play tomorrow night.
...got to give big props to Sather for addressing the depth issues of this team by adding grinding players with "jam" to their game. A characteristic sorely lacking with the Rangers this season.

The moves look promising, but we still need some depth on the blueline. Stu Bickel as a 7th dman, or even Gilroy and Eminger as a 3rd pairing is kind of scary, especially with how many 1-goal games this team plays. I am sure Slats is not done just yet.
@MannySanghera I'm actually fine with a defense that looks like this:
McD-GirardiMDZ-StaalStralman-Gilroy
Eminger and Bickel as 7th and 8th.
@KevinDeLury Yea that blueline looks solid as long as Gilroy can keep his play up. #ven sticking eminger w stralman aint too bad...really hoping for Micheal Sauer to come back healthy next season, he was solid. ..I guess my comment was soley based on my extreme nearvousness and fear when I see Stu Bickel on our blueline for even 4 minutes per game..I cant imagine Mcllarth being worse than Bickel baxk there
@KevinDeLury @MannySanghera I like it too. Unless we could get someone like Tom Gilbert. Otherwise I like this line up.
Any chance the Miller recall is just until Kreider is fully healed, then they'll have to make a call on who gets sent down?
@johnnyb3910 If Miller can impress tomorrow night he'll buy himself a few more games but if overwhelmed he'll be back with Whale once Kreider is ready.
My main concern about this all, while we look good with forwards, will Torts decide to reinsert Bickel as a defenseman and scratch Gilroy again. I know it would seem absolutely stupid of Torts to do that, but Bickel has stuck around for this long with the team. While I do think Gilroy will remain as the 6th man, I am still a bit worried.
Hagelin Stepan Pyatt/ kreider Boyle miller/ mashinter Halpern powe/ Asham scratched and Bickel scratched
i cant wait to get home and update nhl13! hahasomething tells me the wild will not make this deal in my gm mode...
Gotta assume this means Kreider isn't ready to come back yet, or when he does it will be with the Whale
Very strange, but exciting. I don't think you solve the depth issues by bringing i a rookie and a kid with all of 13 NHL games under his belt, but maybe it's just for safety sake. It would be interesting though to see a Kreider-Stepan-Miller line, just to see what they could do together (shooter-passer-grinder).
Its exciting, but Ferriero...Idk. I think he earned a chance to stay in the lineup. They did play well last game. Still, it's exciting. Can it be tomorrow now, please?
@AnnoyingJoe ya i thought ferriero deserved a spot. but id like to see what miller can do!
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG @AnnoyingJoe
Agreed. I liked the Ferrari kid, he was flying around. Seemed like a Torts guy. With that said, so are Mash, Miller and Betts 2.0 (Powe). Excited for the NJ game. Rangers just got younger and faster (and a little smaller)
@brian2686 @GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG @AnnoyingJoe
Hey Brian....we didn't get smaller. Mash is a big kid...6'3-6'4...about 230lbs. He replaces Rupp. I'm really excited to see JT Miller....6'1..200lbs. Fast skater...two way player....loves to take body...will drop the gloves if he needs to. Add Powe to the list...and .the Rangers got faster, stronger on the boards...more physical and grittier
@AnnoyingJoe I think he just ended up being the odd man out here. Plus Miller and Mash have a little more scoring in them.
@KevinDeLury @AnnoyingJoe Well, nice to know he's available in case of injury. Depth!
@ry_man Crazy. Just sort of exploded. Which is good for blog traffic. lol
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG I think Miller was #10 with Whale so hell be changing.
@KevinDeLury he likes 11 too so thats a no go. id like to see some 80's or 90's on the rangers
@AnnoyingJoe @AG_Blue I just saw mash is 40 and miller is 47...ugly numbers...smh
This is why I am completely against the move to call up Miller. This was said this past Friday!!!! https://twitter.com/HowlingsToday/status/297530693100118016
@Melissa (angelzeyes2521) -- given the injuries, we could use a call-up, and Miller deserves a chance for all his good play with the Whale. He won't stay with the big club, but it will be a great experience for him and it will make it just a little easier for him down the road when he does eventually make the transition to big club.
@Melissa (angelzeyes2521) Always a risk in bringing up a young guy. Likely only here until Kreider or Cally are back. Unless of course he tears it up.
@KevinDeLury But the amount of damage that could be done in that short of a timeframe...it just doesn't make sense to me. I hope I'm wrong.
@brian2686 @Melissa (angelzeyes2521) @KevinDeLury so if Miller tears it up Cory Conacher style, the rangers "100%" send him back down...not so sure about that
@Melissa (angelzeyes2521) @KevinDeLury
Its just a cup of coffee for Miller. Mash might hang around to fill out Rupp's size/grit on the 4th line. Miller is filling in for Kreider and Cally. He is 100% back to the AHL once they get healthy. Doesn't matter if he sucks or tears it up. I'm sure Miller is going into it with those expectations. I wouldn't worry about a regression if he is out of place
@Melissa (angelzeyes2521) @KevinDeLury a little time up to learn from the big club shouldnt hurt. you shove the kid with a ton of responsibility early that might hurt him. raw talent like his definitely can kick start a club even if hes just doing it in practice.
maybe they called miller up to shake the team up a bit? young kid looking to steal a spot from someone?
@ry_man Absolutely. With Kreider likely back by the end of the week and Cally the week after some of these guys might be playing for their jobs this week.
we all knew somehting was going to happen...but i dont think we expected this much? could it be sathers not even done yet?
@KevinDeLury @GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG -- i would like to see a roster more or less in place sooner than later. we got a lot of new guys around here.
