McDonagh to Return Tonight, Nash a Game-Time Decision (UPDATE: Gilroy Likely Out, Eminger In)
Written by James Wrabel on .
UPDATE 11:40AM:
#NYR say Matt Gilroy, the only D not on ice this AM, has the flu. So Steve Eminger should remain in lineup on the blue line
— Pat Leonard (@NYDNRangers) February 28, 2013
- Tough blow for Gilroy, who's played well enough since coming up and shown some offensive ability. However, this gives Eminger a chance to show that his performance vs. Jets (20:38 TOI, assist) on Tuesday wasn't a fluke and deserves to play.
Original Post:
Ryan McDonagh (undisclosed injury) and Rick Nash (undisclosed injury) were out on the ice for the Rangers' AM skate prior to tonight's matchup with the Lightning. According to multiple reports, McDonagh says he will be playing tonight. Rick Nash is likely to return.
Nash expects to play, just will test himself in warmups to make sure #NYR

Michael Del Zotto (undisclosed injury) did skate but was unavailable in the locker room for an update.
- And just like that, the Rangers are getting healthy. Would be a huge boost to get both McD and Nash back tonight. Especially for the offense.
- Never had to write undisclosed injury so many times before.
Meanwhile, Steve Zipay of Newsday informs us of the likely scratch for tonight's game should Nash be healthy enough to play.
Chris Kreider still on ice with everyone else in the room. Likely scratch.

- Just send the kid down to the Whale already.

So at what point do we see: DelZotto assigned to the Whale Let's hope Emminger keeps up the good work- as Kevin mentioned he looked good last game!
I like Gilroy and was generally happy with his play, but Emminger is the much more legit NHLer, and you want a 6th guy to be more steady on defense anyway. He's been solid in long stretches for the Rangers over last couple seasons, and was playing great before he got hurt last year. I think he clearly deserves to be the 6th guy.
@PharmerBern I agree. I'll take Eminger over Gilroy any day of the week. Nobody gives Eminger any love in this blog, I think he's a solid D Man. Gilroy plays scared.
@TheNYRBlog your right he's not ready yet. Gotta let him make mistakes and learn, but the NHL is not the place to do it.
@TheNYRBlog Do u think Kreider is being held back from top line opportunities so ge can be re-signed on the cheap next summer?
@TheNYRBlog I feel sorry for Kreider. Sure not having a good year but we know he has talent. This hurts him
I'm guessing Kreider will be sent down the second they know they have at least 12 healthy bodies to play up front and 6 on defense. I just wish they would call someone else up to sit and wait in that position.
So who thought on Sunday morning that the team could possibly be healthy by the end of the week? I'm calling anyone who says they did a liar lol
@Melissa (blknblueshirts) I agree, I think once Asham is 100% Kreider gets sent down. He's gotta tons of talent and speed but he's turning the puck over a lot (see 3rd Jets goal) and he hasn't figured out how to battle yet. Send him down and let him play 20+ a night.
They need to figure out what they are going to do with Bickel. If he plays D he gets about 4 min TOI and if plays F he gets around the same. Its started to become a waste of a spot in the lineup and putting more minute on the Top 4 D-men. I dont see the fact that we are carrying 8 D in the first place. figure it out Torts
@TheNYRBlog can we please send Torts to the bottom of the river, next to Avery's skates?
@NYR_FullTilt @scottyhockey @thenyrblog it's just nonsensical and emotional fanaticism
@NYR_FullTilt @ScottyHockey @Garts2point2 @TheNYRBlog any time he goes will be a blessing. You'll see.
@Jen9400 @scottyhockey @garts2point2 @thenyrblog Firing Torts is just plain nutty. Especially nearing the halfway point of a short season.
@NYR_FullTilt @ScottyHockey @Garts2point2 @TheNYRBlog I Love Wayne too but it doesn't mean we can't have our own minds.
@Garts2point2 @ScottyHockey @TheNYRBlog boyle is an AHL and gaborik scores in bunches cant be counted on to be a callahan
@Rpennella40 @scottyhockey @thenyrblog nope. Gaborik is 6'1" and Boyle is 6'7" and they play like they are 5'4"
@Garts2point2 @ScottyHockey @TheNYRBlog ever think having this many guys under 6 foot is an issue
@Garts2point2 @ScottyHockey @TheNYRBlog the doesnt play a callahan game, st croix has skill but hes a way a way from a full time nhler
@Rpennella40 @Garts2point2 @ScottyHockey @TheNYRBlog I still think @scotthockey is correct, JT Miller will never play an NHL game. oh wait..
@Rpennella40 @scottyhockey @thenyrblog also, Carl Hagelin, Ryan Callahan, Asham, Powe, Stalman...
@Garts2point2 @ScottyHockey @TheNYRBlog st croix plays no where near the game of a parise
@Garts2point2 @ScottyHockey @TheNYRBlog i personally think miller and hagelin are the only true nhl prospects the rest are ptojects
@Rpennella40 @scottyhockey @thenyrblog lol at "undersized" you know who else is 5'11" Giroux, Parise... I can keep going.
@Rpennella40 @scottyhockey @thenyrblog ok so now you want to break down each prospect.. They drafted for SKILL. You're point is false.
@Garts2point2 @ScottyHockey @TheNYRBlog nieves also plays a game much like a russian wont go to the net
@Garts2point2 @ScottyHockey @TheNYRBlog CK is the only true NHL talent out of those guys, st croix is under sized the others AHL/3rd line
@Rpennella40 @scottyhockey @thenyrblog Fogarty, Nieves, these are all skill guys. Not grinders
@Rpennella40 @scottyhockey @thenyrblog Miller lead the WJC in scoring. what about Yogan, Thomas, CK, Fasth, Lindberg, St. Croix, McColgan,
@ScottyHockey @Garts2point2 @TheNYRBlog i seen him play hell just get misused like del zotto wont be up ice at all where hes effective
@Rpennella40 @Garts2point2 @TheNYRBlog Skjei is a highly skilled kid, known for his skating. Not a hitter.
@Garts2point2 @Rpennella40 @TheNYRBlog I agree that's false, but it is a mix of skill & grinding. Miller isn't a 'skill' kid, MStC is.
@Garts2point2 @ScottyHockey @TheNYRBlog miller? Mcilrath? Skjei? All gunna be 30 goal guys huh?
@Rpennella40 @scottyhockey @thenyrblog well that's false, because everyone they have drafted lately is skilled not grinders.
@Garts2point2 @ScottyHockey @TheNYRBlog mosts gm and scouts evaluate basied on a coach, obviously they look past skill guys with torts here
@ScottyHockey @nyr_fulltilt @thenyrblog still Detroit with all their offense, barely over .500
@ScottyHockey @nyr_fulltilt have you watched him in the NHL under Babcock? There is no way he plays for DET if not committed to two-way
@ScottyHockey @garts2point2 he's a -2 in 20 games...sure not Selke worthy but he ain't Mashinter either.
@Garts2point2 @NYR_FullTilt @TheNYRBlog As everyone pointed out to me back then, Richard$ had better offers but came to NY to play for Torts
@Garts2point2 @NYR_FullTilt Saw him in Zug last year, watched a number of Detroit games - yes Brunner is that bad defensively.
@ScottyHockey @garts2point2 @thenyrblog yes the same Richards you were rooting for last year. Breathe Scotty!
@Garts2point2 @NYR_FullTilt @TheNYRBlog Ultimately yes. But if we had someone other than Torts, would we have had Richard$?
@ScottyHockey @nyr_fulltilt Brunner is 26? He's not a kid and he's obviously not so bad defensively or he wouldn't get scoring changes.
@ScottyHockey @nyr_fulltilt @thenyrblog sure, but again the coach ultimately only has what the organization gives him to work with.
@NYR_FullTilt @Garts2point2 @TheNYRBlog Damien Brunner sucks at defense. Babcock keeps playing him. Brunner has 16 pts in 20 games.
@ScottyHockey @garts2point2 @thenyrblog ice time for young players almost has nothing to do with how good they are and more about situations
@Garts2point2 @NYR_FullTilt @TheNYRBlog We can blame Torts for misusing guys. Muckler misused Malhotra ...
@ScottyHockey @nyr_fulltilt @thenyrblog ok well that's beside the point I was making.
@Garts2point2 @NYR_FullTilt @TheNYRBlog he gave ice time based on how good he thinks they are. Gave Kalinin 20 min a night. Gave Turris 13.
@ScottyHockey @nyr_fulltilt @thenyrblog it's not like you can blame Torts for picking McIlrath or Thomas if they don't develop.
@ScottyHockey @nyr_fulltilt @thenyrblog he has input but he's not out scouting players he coaching the team....
@Garts2point2 @NYR_FullTilt @TheNYRBlog Cmon Steve, like the coach has no input as to who is on his team? You know better.
@ScottyHockey @nyr_fulltilt @thenyrblog I didn't know coaches were responsible for evaluating talent too. What do GMs and scouts do then?
@NYR_FullTilt @Garts2point2 @TheNYRBlog If Gretzky was a good judge of talent he wouldn't have failed so spectacularly in Phoenix.
@ScottyHockey @garts2point2 @thenyrblog because he said this... http://t.co/r1oL7Fohgt
@ScottyHockey @garts2point2 @thenyrblog Scotty, do you respect Wayne Gretzky? Yes this is a setup...
@Garts2point2 @NYR_FullTilt @TheNYRBlog It's a joke. Don't think the skates are at the bottom of a river, don't want Torts dead. Just gone.
