Mashinter Watch: Scores In Whale Loss Last Night

Written by Kevin DeLury on .

Yesterday, I posted about how the newly acquired CT Whale player Brandon Mashinter could be someone who sparks this Rangers team. While they obviously didn't need him last night, the fact that John Tortorella doesn't feel comfortable giving Mike Rupp (4:28) or Stu Bickel (3:27) more than five minutes of ice time, means there's still a need for a fourth line energy guy on this team.

So I decided I'm going to do a "Mashinter Watch" on the blog to follow along with his performances with the Whale. And it got off to a great start last night, as Mashinter scored in the Whale's 3-2 loss to Springfield. The goal was Mashinter's third in the eight games since joining Connecticut. He also has four assists and two fights.

Watch Mashinter's goal (4:40 mark)...

...loving Mashinter's speed for a big guy. If he can keep this play going, the Rangers are going to have no choice but to call him up very soon.

Also in the game, J.T. Miller scored his eighth goal of the season (5:05 mark of above video), while Dylan McIlrath did this...

...holy crap those two were throwing bombs!

I get the feeling it doesn't matter who the 4th line guys are they're only gonna get 5 minutes... just how Tortorella works.

Not that it matters to me because I don't think he's an NHL player, but if they send Bickel down doesn't he have to clear waivers?  Somebody would probably claim him and I think Torts likes him for whatever reason. The other guy they could send down is Gilroy, but he's played well.  Besides, AHL success does not translate to NHL success (see Kris Newbury).  Give the kid more than 8 games to get used to the system.

i was actually just in hartford on friday and saw the game against bridgeport.  mashinter isnt bad but i dont think he would do much for the team.  big guy though.

@ry_man Thanks for the scouting report. I'm most likely just over-hyping the guy, but looks good.

@KevinDeLury i have to say my scouting may be a tad off since i was pretty tanked.  he was noticeable and liked throwing hits.  my kind of player!

see what they can get for Boyle, he's not the same without Prust and that'll give a bit of a wake up to the team.  Then bring this kid up.
