Does Rick Nash Have a Concussion?

Written by James Wrabel on .

Yesterday, I may have rubbed some of the Blueshirt Faithful the wrong way suggesting Rick Nash's day away from practice was a sign he may be hurting, using the situation Dan Girardi experienced recently, sitting a day from practice to then being out the next two games with an undisclosed injury.

We did find out yesterday that Nash missed Friday night's season subscriber's forum because of an illness and the team kept him off the ice the next day.

This morning in his weekly Slap Shots column, Larry Brooks of the New York Post takes it a step further, recalling the third period in Boston on Tuesday night, where he believes an incident occurred between the New York Rangers and Boston Bruins:

So 6:30 into the third period on Tuesday night in Boston, Milan Lucic finished off his check against Rick Nash by using his forearm to drive the Rangers winger’s head into the boards.

There was no penalty on the play (though Nash received a minor for a feeble retaliatory hook) and there was no supplemental discipline issued, either, because Lucic initially and primarily got the body.

Now, a few days later, Nash isn’t feeling well. And though it may be a coincidence, it may not be one, either.

Nash did play the rest of Tuesday's game. He showed no ill effects on Thursday vs. the Islanders, playing 24:59 while collecting an assist and two shots on net.

Nash's status for tonight's game vs. the Capitals is still unknown. The team is not skating this morning because of the 6PM start.

...I'm not buying it, Brooksie. While I'm not fully discounting the possibility because of how tricky concussions are to diagnose and evaluate, I don't believe for a second the Rangers would compromise the health of their prize offseason acquisition. Further, I don't believe Nash is concealing anything, either.

...We reported, thanks to some faithful followers, that Nash was ill this weekend. We're sticking to that.

@TheNYRBlog Yeah, enough about O'Reilly trade. Who do #NYR have now to challenge next guy like Lucic who runs Nash or 1 of our other stars?

cant wait for baseball season to start so that...hmmm... how to put this...

so that some can go to other message boards and talk "championship now! or banishment" about players.

Jan. how are we supposed to take your post seriously, when you past that Prust was traded. He was signed as a free agent by Montreal.

Never should have traded Prust.I think he was definitely worth 2 mil and a longer contract.Torts keeps saying we are weak down the middle.Prust? Fedetenko? And now he sits Boyle out.His line mates have been traded. With a compressed season it could take some time to develop the chemistry that line had.And we lost Artie and Dubi. The only good thing IMO Sather did was to get Nash, and Pyatt. He traded the heart and soul of the "middle."JMO

Said it the other night, last year someone goes after lucic.  We led the league in fighting majors with about 60.  This year we are close to if not last in the league with 3.  This team has no backbone, and if no one protects your best player, there truly is a problem with this group of guys.

While it's true concussion symptoms can take a while to recognize, but let's not speculate here.  This wasn't some rumors Brooks picked up on.  This is Brooks PURELY speculating, 100%.  Nash got hit a week ago, and now he's sick.  So it must be a concussion.  Could it be?  Sure.  But there's absolutely nothing to indicate that is is.  Nash also coughed the other day.  Could be pneumonia......

Does anyone remember who went after Lucic after he smashed Nash's head into the glass and then was sparing with him after?

Neither do I.....

@Beckfan5 Nash did. lol. Concerning for sure. No way Lucic isn't challenged last year.

Remember Staal?   He played three games and then sat out.  Then played the rest of the season and then we know the rest.  Players don't recognize the symptoms more than anything.  When that hit happened, I thought to myself that looked ugly,  I hope to god Brook's is wrong, but I got to admit, I'm worried.

@rangersfan thinking back nash looked like a guy, dazed, feebly trying to retaliate.

@TheNYRBlog Concussion symptoms can sometimes take a time to manifest. Its possible to get concussed and not be affected till the nextday

@mobilope But that happened last week. Not saying it isn't the case, but I don't think it's likely.
