Does Mashinter Deserve a Call-up?

Written by Kevin DeLury on .

Since the Rangers obtained Brandon Mashinter from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for Tommy Grant, he has done nothing but impress for the CT Whale.

The 6' 4" Mashinter has 2g, 4a in his seven games with the Whale and has been more than willing to drop the gloves when necessary, as seen here in last night's 5-4, OT loss to Bridgeport (2:15 mark)...

Here's Sharks GM Doug Wilson on Mashinter (via Daily News)...

“(Mashinter) is a big physical kid. Sometimes players just need a change of scenery. He’s got upside to him. Some young players just have to understand the consistency needed at the next level. But he’s a good kid, we had a lot of forwards in Worcester (San Jose’s AHL club), and it was a deal that was good for us, good for him, and we wish Brandon nothing but the best.”

Hockey's Future has this report on Mashinter...

"Mashinter plays with physicality and grit while working the boards well down low but has to drive the front of the opposition's net more often. The hulking winger needs improvement in his skating stride and defensive game to develop into a power forward but needs to get in the high traffic areas to score not trying to be a shooter or a sniper. He projects as a third or fourth line checking forward if he gets to the NHL."

...the 24-year old has an edge to his game as well as some scoring pop. With the Rangers in desperate need of something, anything to get them going, this kid Mashinter has the potential to give them a spark. Also at 6' 4" he could be a big body Torts could park in front of the net to create havoc and some much needed scoring opportunities.

...another thing he likes to do is shoot the puck, as he has 16 shots on goal in the seven games. You guys remember what shooting the puck is right?

I mentioned this in the Callahan post. He's way more skilled than Boyle and the same size.

Sounds like a Prust in development. Bring him up.

I love this kids game. If he could be Lucic lite how good would that be for our team!?

@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG Not sure we can expect Lucic lite but he looks like he can play with some "jam."

Glad to give this guy a chance, it's not like Bickel is some kind of bonus in there.  I think Asham can go out there and piss people off if nothing else, which is something that the Rangers could use right now: a pest.

They need more then a spark they need a atomic bomb blast to get their shit going right now.

Completely agree, as you probably know. Said it numerous times already. Glad to see this is posted though.

@KevinDeLury  @JoshKaye At this point, anything has to be better than Rupp and Asham. I'll hold off on Bickel for now since he can win a fight, but he's gotta improve on his actual hockey skills.

If Tortorella dresses Bickel as the 12th forward tonight it just goes to show how unprepared they are.

Especially while the whole team other than the 1st line isn't scoring any goals.
