Elliotte Friedman says Avs talked to Rangers about getting Michael Del Zotto for O'Reilly. But they also wanted more— adater (@adater) February 17, 2013
Dater adds that Colorado is looking for an offensive defenseman or proven forward and picks for O'Reilly.
Apparently when Colorado asked for more than Del Zotto, Glen Sather backed away. Rangers were also looking for a defenseman in return.
...yes, Del Zotto has a lot of shortcomings, but I'm not ready to give up on the Rangers young defenseman just yet. He's still only 21 and a stud offensive defenseman is much harder to find than a second line center who's yet to score 20 goals in the NHL. Now I'm not saying O'Reilly isn't talented, but I think he's being way over-valued. And when you factor in that the Avalanche were likely asking for prospects and picks as well, I think this was a non-starter for Sather.
...having said that, I don't blame Sather for having interest in O'Reilly. He wouldn't be doing his job if he didn't. Sather was likely seeing if he could fleece another GM, but Avs were asking for too much and he backed away. Great job by the Rangers GM.
Dz and picks for oreily you would have to be mad not to do that. Del zotto is a good player, but oreily has huge potential. Dz has been here for three years and still can't play in his own zone. Problem is we would need to find a number 5 defenseman
I believe the Rangers should trade Del Zotto before the rest of the league realizes what many Rangers fans already know and what the rest won't admit. He is an overrated, overpaid, sixth defensemen who will never live up to his high expectations.
Duh. Sather will not part with NHL players or "ready" prospects for a guy that is at best a second line center on this team. I'm starting to dislike this whole "Yankee attitude" I sense (let's get this guy an that guy and that guy and that guy....), especially when there are so many complaints about how last year's "mix" was disturbed by all the perosnnel changes that have occurred. Even if you do not like Del Zotto (21 YEARS OLD!), he is much more valuable than O'Reilly - who you will have to pay $4million+ per year to do what Stepan has done, if he's lucky - oh, yeah, I forgot, Stepan sucks and is done and washed up, and Richards may be too...as it was said yesterday on here, unless Slats fleeces the Avs (just for ROR's rights - no sign-and-trade allowed in NHL!), or just signs ROR to an offer sheet, not going to happen.
If it was a straight up trade then maybe. But not for anything else. Who would fill his d spot? Eminger? No thanks. Did Sather tell the Avs that Brian Boyle is 6'7!?
Reason #384 why I wouldn't mind getting rid of del Zotto.
What a wussy.
In all seriousness, ROR for MDZ is not a smart move, but I would consider trading him for someone who has a little more than just "potential"
@TheNYRBlog I agree. I don't see how NYR can even afford to move a d-man right now. I'd like 2 see them add 1 if anything.
I don't know how people can't get past the fact he put up 40 points two years ago, he's probably accounted for 100 points against with his atrocious play on d. Bad move, people are treating this kid like Sanchez of the jets with all these excuses, he is what he is and that's a defenseman who can go on streaks with points but is night in and night out a complete liability on defense.
@TheNYRBlog O'Reilly for Del Zotto is a great trade. If Sather can get a D in return as well then they've definitely upgraded their team.
@TheNYRBlog they want kings ransom for him. You just don't trade a 22 year old defenseman who puts up 40 plus points a year ago.
@TheNYRBlog I don't want #NYR to trade Del Zotto either but when has he (as a pro) really shown that he really is an Offensive D-Man?
if sauer were healthy, or if torts had other dmen he trusted to give more than 7 mins of ice, it be somethin i consider
As much as I joked about this, and as often as I meat mouth DelZaster I agree with Kevin there is still so much potential for DZ to become an awesome standout for the Rangers this would be a mistake and I am glad it was a non starter. Now I hope DelZaster doesn't make me regret saying this!
@Beckfan5 It used to be five feet, so at least he's improving.
@Cmd16 He's a risk to keep around for sure, but I still love his potential.
@shishya100 I guess I'm into older chicks. lol
@mobilope Agreed. Although Del Zotto does scare me. So much potential. Just have to hope he lives up to it.
@JMK8363 Very easily could blow up in Sather's face as Del Zotto can go either way.
@TheNYRBlog You can't deny his skillset or his natural talent, but he's lacking something to bring him to the next level.
@TheNYRBlog @zegallas Not to mention MDZ is still 3-4 years from what's considered the maturation age of an NHL D-man.
@TheNYRBlog with the type of Dman he is in todays league he is going to have scary moments Teams are to good on D nowadays and hes what 21?
@KevinDeLury yes it very well could, but as you keep pointing out a dominant D man with offensive threat is much harder to find and missing out if he does progress would be devastating! That being said he still has a lot of work to do!!!
@TheNYRBlog To me, he doesn't think the game or see the ice well enough to be a top flight D. That's what will always set him apart.
@mavanco Which is why at just age 21 I want to give him time to find it. But he does need to figure it out soon.
@TheNYRBlog My argument to keep him is would you trade him for Drew Doughty w/out looking at this ssn stats? If yes go look at the stats
@KevinDeLury can we please get rid of Sullivan and bring Leetch in to give our D and god forbid our PP a chance to progress?!!?
