Alain Vigneault announced today that Marc Staal is again suffering from a concussion due to the hit he took from Reid Boucher of the Devils Saturday night. He adds that the doctors feel it's not as serious as in the past.
...excuse me if I'm not relieved about the "not as serious" garbage. Any kind of concussion to a guy who's been through what Staal has is always serious. For his own well being, he needs to be shutdown indefinitely. Shame on the Rangers medical staff for even insinuating this could be minor.
...so now what? Trade? McIlrath? Allen? Status quo? Assuming Sather will stand pat during the homestand, but if this train wreck continues, expect a move.
Pat Leonard at the Daily News reports that Derek Dorsett (wrist) will be back in the lineup tonight, while Arron Asham will make his 2013-14 debut.
Beniot Pouliot and Taylor Pyatt will be the healthy scratches.
...welp, we begged for some toughness in the lineup and now we've got it. It's now on Dorsett and Asham to set the tone tonight. Would love for AV to have a fourth line of Asham-Moore-Dorsett take the opening faceoff to send a message right off the bat.
...and hallelujah to both Pouliot and Pyatt in the press box. Let's hope their next destination is on waivers.
Henrik Lundqvist will get his fourth straight start tonight.
...didn't think Lundqvist had a great weekend of games, so I was hoping that Talbot might get the start tonight. Especially since he shutout the Predators last month.
I hope Asham has been either icing his knuckles or in the boxing gym this whole time. he has barely put up ANY numbers in Hartford this season.
honestly staal never really has much of an effect hes def not worth what hes paid i thought we proved that when our defense was fine without him and he doesnt score when hes in the lineup.. with that money u can get offensive defensemen
Honestly the lineup makes more sense with a couple bashers on the 4th line. With so many efforts bereft of fire and passion they could use a coupla undersized missiles who aren't afraid to mix it up. Especially since there isn't another guy on the team who can drop the gloves and show up effectively.
Has anyone else noticed that the MSG cameraman often falls asleep during the game and can't find the player with the puck? Also, how about using a camera from one end of the rink to show plays developing from a different perspective. How about some overhead shots from the bridge? Just some thoughts for when the game is a snoozer.
Pouliot has been scratched 2 of the last 3 games.I think waivers is a distinct possibility.
Really up to Asham to show mgmt that he is up to the task of setting the tone we need, and that he can and will protect his teammates, agree with what others have written...he took the demotion like a pro, but for someone w/pride not used to bus rides and McDonald's for dinner....having the perks of being a pro again for potentially the last time should keep his desire level where we want it.
I think Dorsett will flourish as well w/someone else there to back him up....he always did well with Boll on his flank.
No such thing as a 'minor concussion'. A concussion is a brain injury and Staal is particularly at risk, because of the concussions he has suffered so far.
Honestly I don't know what's wrong with Pulliot, guy has skill, but just can not produce goals, Pyatt doesn't skate period, and he is not tough guy..... Staal... hope he gets better
I'm starting to doubt Ulf Samuelsson's value as defensive coach. Otherwise, John Moore would not look like he is regressing. Stall's problems seem to be physical. Only McDonaugh is tough. Girardi's play has been mediocre. Stralman has been okay but not an offensive threat. Still hoping MDZ's play will improve. Can't Ulf help him?Only Girardi and Falk can't skate, so the defense should be able to improve.
I wonder if Sather is going to hit the speed dial on his phone and give Sean Avery a call. Comes at a cheap price and we lose nothing off the roster. I bet he could pump some life into MSG on this homestand. How loud do you think it would get at MSG when he steps on the ice??
Kevin. I am taking a final as we speak, but are you really surprised that the Rangers doctors are morons at this point? I mean come on.
and hallelujah to both Pouliot and Pyatt in the press box. Let's hope their next destination is on waivers. --- This.
I'm guessing they should have said "severe" not serious. It's obviously serious when someone who has a history of concussions gets one. But it's certainly possible that the symptoms at this point don't look to be as severe.
Well, good news bad news. Super bummed about Staal. From experience of multitude concussions you reach a point where even minor concussions cause PCS, though my last one only was for 3 weeks and was marginal. I can't know about Staal but unfortunately he should consider retiring if he has lingering symptoms. Nash could be next. A smart GM understands this situation and starts planning moves right now! Slats is probably in his office right now thinking about whether or not no 2 snowflakes really are identical! At least the P.P.s are sitting tonight. At least that good news.
If that's the 4th line he goes with, he's gotta give them big minutes in the first half of the first period. Hard forecheck, hit everything in sight, wear them down and set the tone for guys like cally, boyle, and kreider to follow suit. And don't forget asham has a pretty wicked wrister so I can see them getting a little scrappy offense from the garbage areas.
Staal just can't catch a break. It looks like he gets concussed once every year. That eye injury really send him over the hill.He will never be good again. He has been terrible this year, only 3 points. Sorry, but this is business in salary cap era, time to get rid of him. almost 4 M is too much for walking human made of glass.
"Not as serious as in the past" for a concussion is like saying your girlfriend is just a little pregnant. Man Staal's brother really derailed what was looking to be a very promising career. Hopefully he can come back strong, but I doubt he'll ever be near a top 4 anymore, not because of skills but having that many concussions will make him much less aggressive. I'm pulling for him though.
@stevmore I absolutely hate the way ice hockey is produced for TV. Players look tiny, the cameramen can barely follow the puck...it's so hard to convey the immense gravity and physicality of the game. During power plays/penalty kills they should use one camera up and above the goal net.
@LanceGold1 Do you really think a 35 yo who cant really skate is going to help this team??
@Brukie_ Not sure how much he would actually help on the ice, but he would be entertaining (he always is whether you like him or not)
@Brukie_ Doubtful. He's got over a year of rust on him & i think he's just persona non gratta in the NHL.
Yeah, I really don't think they were trying to downplay it, but I don't give the Rangers medical staff the benefit of the doubt on anything considering their past performances.
@Kevin DeLury now this is just getting insulting...
You forgot to mention the the guy just called up playing in his first NHL game tonight scoring a pair....
@Kevin DeLury soon teams aren't even going to have a starter and a backup. it will be the starter and the rangers starter
@Medvjed004 Staal has not been the same since his brother took him out. I believe his eye is not perfect either...Send him to Carolina with his brothers.....
@Medvjed004 a shame that his own brother is the one who started the series of concussions for marcl :-/
Sad but probably true. I have doubts as to that eye of his as well. I don't think that I'm alone on that.
@gravey94 I thought he was playing really well again before the eye injury. I think that eye injury has really hampered his career.
Rust and all. He is better than Pyatt Poulion. Boyle. D Moore. Hags...... brings grit. Can skate fights and scores
@Kevin DeLury at least they don't have the history of the PHI medical staff
