According to Steve Zipay at Newsday both Ryan Callahan (knee) and Marc Staal (concussion) will join the Rangers on their five-game road trip starting in Washington tonight.
Callahan is still two weeks away from returning, while no timetable has been given for Staal who has skated for the last four days.
...i like the idea of 2/3 of the Rangers leadership traveling with the team as they embark on an important road trip. The team has been playing better of late, so anything to help keep this thing rolling in the right direction sounds good to me.
...while the battle level has been much higher the last few games, getting Callahan back in the lineup as soon as possible would be a huge lift. Although, with how well the team has been playing lately, it could be a difficult decision for AV on who comes out. Right now, my choice would be Richards. However, I have a sneaking suspicion it'll be Miller.
Meanwhile, Larry Brooks at the New York Post feels that when Staal returns, Michael Del Zotto will likely be headed to the press box.
Brooks adds that Rangers management has all but settled on dealing Del Zotto, but they need to make a decision on a return package as their current asking price of a top four defenseman does not seem realistic at this point.
Brooks notes that if Del Zotto is dealt before Staal returns, because of the knee injury to Dylan McIlrath (will be reevaluated in a week), the Blueshirts will likely recall Connor Allen from Hartford.
...man these Del Zotto trade rumors have dragged on. I really hope he gets moved once the roster freeze is lifted tomorrow, just so I can stop blogging about it. And unfortunately, if Sather doesn't drop his asking price, the crazy talk will persist as Del Zotto isn't going anywhere.
...although, I do like hearing that Allen would be the likely callup if Del Zotto is dealt. He looked NHL ready during the preseason, so he's probably that much more prepared after almost a half season in the AHL.
I get that DZ has to go and I think it's the right move - but I'm curious as to why neither Torts nor AV has ever given him a look on the wing?
I've thought about what would happen when Cally comes back and I have an interesting thought that many people may not agree with. Our team has been better as of late and it's been nice, but I don't think we can afford to sit Richie even if his play has been mediocre. We all love Cally, but he's at his best when he's with other players who can forecheck well and when he plays an aggressive game. Boyle and Moore bring a similar skillset to the Rangers, and at some point we're gonna have to choose between one or the other. A 4th line of Cally-Moore/Boyle-Dorsett could be a great defensive/checking line that has a much higher potential to score than what we're currently seeing right now. Yes, Cally has skill. Yes, he's getting paid more than any 4th liner should. Yes, he's our captain. But doing what's best for the team is important. He can play the game we love to see him play. I'm expecting to hear a lot of criticism. So let's hear it.
Expand the deal with Ottawa. They are looking to lose dollars and at the very least , not add any. SO........MDZ, (2.5- RFA ) Marek Hrivick( Entry Level SR 665.000) Brian Boyle (1.7- UFA ) a 3rd Round pick 2014 for Zack Smith (3 years 1.875 left) Eric Gryba 562.500 K -RFA) & Milan Michaleck ( 6M Salary - 4.33 Cap Hit -UFA)
MM needs a change of scenery as well. Worth the risk if he can find his hands, if not, he goes UFA come July & Smith & Gryba are still in the fold.
Zach smith from ott would be nice upgrade on the 4th line. He can take over for Moore as the new center. Now if we can a tough winger with size. Orr - smith - Dorsett
Have you ever thought this MDZ trade rumors have affected his play? Maybe he starts screwing up then realizes that if he plays bad they wont be able to get anything for him and he is not traded. Just a thought. But like Kev says for his own good hope its part of a bigger trade for some grit and scoring or a monster in front of the net to help hank see those shots that are closer now (lol)
The idea of getting a top 4 Dman for DZ is flawed from the get go at best. Trade our under forming player for theirs? WTF Sather? How bout getting a good bottom 6 guy with snarl and a prospect? For DZ to suddenly and impressively turn his game around would be the best scenario. He wasn't bad last game. IK - keep dreaming :)
I'm so excited...I booked my hotel in Tampa Bay & I hope it is the same one the New York Rangers are staying at.
If the Rangers are going to have any success this year, JT must play. This guy could break out at any moment. He's not afraid to shoot the puck and is always looking for his shot. He's got game. Let him play!
How 'bout benching Boyle when Cally returns? He has some positives but we can't win when a forward provides no offense.
I want Del Zotto moved for the poor guys sake as it can't be easy hearing these rumors every day. Then again, once he's moved the fan base will move on to another guy to run out of town and I'm pretty sure I personally won't like the choice.
As for Allen coming up, I like it but then the Rangers would definitely not be able to take back a lot of salary in the deal as Allen has the highest cap hit of everyone in Hartford. (With bonus, I believe he's around $1.7 and yes I know part of the season is done but DZ is at $2.5 so not a huge savings there.) Honestly, as much as I think DZ has to go, the Rangers can't do anything till they know Staal is healthy. And even then, they really need another D man just in case. Can it be March so these stupid rumors end already?
That Sather thinks he can get a Top 4 defensemen for DZ is indicative of just how bad a GM he is. The only way it adds up that DZ should yield a Top 4 D-man back is if you believe DZ already IS a Top 4 defenseman, in which case, ipso facto, why do you trade him? Even if he WAS a Top 4 d-man tell me how often in sports a position player was traded for the same position player of like value (not potential)? "We love our d-man, he's great. Oh you love your guy, he's great....let's trade them...you know, just because."Sure I'm being slightly facetious, but you see the point. Almost all trades are made by each team trading from a position of relative strength to the opposing teams position of relative weakness - thus shoring up both teams - in theory. Still...that he thinks he can somehow say that DZ is a Top 4 d-man is idiocy. Does he actually think the other GM's don't watch the games? This ain't Craigslist Glen. People won't fall for your bullshit. "I'm out of town right now, but my secretary is going to drop by with a check for your item....." sigh......friggin' Craigslist Glen.
I could see that being a rotation spot for him, especially to keep him from having so many minutes and more potential to be out on IR for a 3rd time this season
Wow just saw that confirmed. I for one am surprised. we saw how AV handled Luongo & Schneider last year. Could be pretty awful.
Gryba is not one of Ottawas's top 4 but he can bring some toughness and play 15 minutes if you need him too.Not a liability on the ice. More upside than Falk (albeit not by tons.)
@BetweentheworldsHe's actually been good the last two games.
He provides face off wins and shot blocking and penalty killing, you need guys like boyle, what you dont need is guys like poopalot who is here for scoring and doesnt, or pyatt, what he is here for I still can not figure out, or Richards whp provides lack of cap space for any trades
@King For CupScoreless in his last 8 games and is a -5 in that span. I think him and Nash are the only two not playing well right now.
Contract probably be would be high and player would be much older......probably out of his prime.... which makes no sense
Sather isn't getting a top 4 dmen back.
You and I are both on the Zack Smith & Eric Gryba bandwagon. I don't like Michaleck even for a half yr. Should work the trade 2 for 2 (maybe DelZotto + Pouliot or Fast.) Or just go the other direction and see if Toronto would part with Franson.
honestly... Falk has been playing very well for his TOI.
He has been better..... but not good enough...He is not a fit for NY.......Both systems he had been in he had struggled
Fast is hurt and Pouliot isn't a real chip, he.s a UFA that's basically a project. Like i said I'd roll the dice on Michaleck . (it would also almost guarantee that Pyat is waived.) If MM plays well and can stay healthy, Its another potential piece up front with the UFAs we have leaving. If not, he goes somewhere else. The team needs, grit up front, a bit more of a physical presence on the blue line & hell, they still can't score over 4 lines & MM has the ability and is an up tempo player that can succeed in AV's system. Smith and Gryba meet the other needs.
True but with Staals situation uncertain & Ottawabeing a real potential trade partner, I like what Gryba can bring. If Falk can outplay him, so be it. I think the depth would be ideal.I know Milchaleck is a wild card but ... some times ya got to roll the dice.
