If the Rangers decide to allow Ryan Callahan to test free agency this offseason there will be plenty of suitors for the captain's services.
According to Howard Simon at WGR 550 in Buffalo, one of those teams could be the Sabres.
Simon adds that the Rochester native Callahan brings the work ethic and passion for the game the Sabres are seeking.
He does caution that Callahan has a tendency to be injury prone.
The Sabres will have plenty of money to spend this offseason as they'll be $40 million under the cap.
Meanwhile, Larry Brooks at the New York Post feels that if the Rangers aren’t able to sign Callahan and Dan Girardi to extensions before the March 5 deadline, the team must be willing to trade both as rental properties in exchange for draft picks and prospects.
...with Lundqvist locked up long term, Rangers fans' sense of panic can now be squarely focused on the possibility of Callahan wearing a different sweater next season.
...obviously, I have no idea what Callahan's thinking would be if he ends up on the open market, but you have to assume his close to hometown Sabres will be on his short list. Always tough to turn down an opportunity to play in front of friends and family. Although, I'm not sure all the losing Callahan will likely endure in upstate New York would be worth it.
...and if you're the Sabres, who will be looking to rebuild this summer, bringing a player with Callahan's leadership and commitment is probably a great place to start. I did, however, find it interesting to see Simon mention Callahan's injury issues, which are obviously no secret and could hamper his ability to obtain a long term contract from the Rangers or other potential solicitors.
...at the end of the day, similar to Lundqvist, an extension to bring back Callahan will be done before the end of the season with the Rangers, again, likely overpaying the team's heart and soul in money and years. Girardi? I'm no so sure it's a slam dunk that he'll be back next season.
Pat Leonard at the Daily News noted that Callahan was spotted at the Rangers practice facility on crutches yesterday as he continues his recovery from a second-degree sprain of the MCL that'll keep him out 4-6 weeks.
If Cally was so productive this team would not be where they r at this point. What has he really done?
We have to start thinking about the logo on the front of the jersey and not the names on the back. If a guy doent fit the mold or doesn't produce then we either have to A. Cut ties and try and bring someone in that can or B. Stop bitching about the teams lack of production and success. Decide
I don't really think of Cally as injury prone. Anybody who plays the style he does is going to get the injuries he does. Put yourself I front of enough shots, especially Chara's and your surprised when broken bones occur. Hit everything on the ice and your surprised that an injury occurs. Never back down from a fight or scrum and be surprise putting yourself in the war zone gets you a shoulder injury. He has pretty much earned every injury for this team and fans. It's not like he broke his ankle walking out of his apartment. Everybody whines this team isn't tough enough, gritty enough and willing to do the dirty work, so the one guy willing to do it all get's injured and now we whine he's injury prone. Go figure what it take to make you all happy but I would love to have a lot more injury prone player like Cally on this team. Going down fighting, scraping and hitting is better than watching a bunch on guys stand around and wonder why we can't score.
Yeah let's trade the heart and soul of our team... This team blows now. Av sucks . Horrible move getting rid of torts
Tthe Rangers should let all their UFA's be traded at the deadline or let walk except for Stralman. Its time to move on because none of them are elite players and the youth movement should continue.Callahan Girardi Boyle can all get good returns in picks or prospects for rentals. It would be a big mistake to resign Callahan or Girardi -the longer the term the bigger the mistake.Seriously big mistake.
Just keep the prospects moving up and if AV has to be replaced then that's what happens and there's a new coach. But the team still has youth skill and ability to add players as needed.Rangers can't fall back into the trap of a roster of old has beens even if they're homegrown and popular has beens..We can get back to the Eastern Final soon if we follow the prospect path as before.
I'm not attached to any of the current players anymore, besides maybe Zuccarello. The only thing that makes me panic as a fan is the thought of Glen Sather keeping his job.
@TheNYRBlog this whole season is a mind frak. I don't know what to think.
Losing as we have lately with the lack of effort has brought all this talk to a head. That 5 yr contract to the new Coach isn't looking very good. Any insight on the effectiveness of AV's Assistants?
I love the way Cally plays, realizing you're going to get the injuries. However, as the man with the "C" on his sweater, you have to wonder about his effectiveness as Captain in the locker room. Again, overall comment. What have the Rangers won? How many Cups. No one is expendable on this team. No one.
"really", people don't have more important things in life to think about than how many millions & yrs you're going to give an oft injured player (although a great hustler & role model). if he won't except a decent offer than let him fly. who wants to overpay another vet, even if he's one of ours. these guys are WAY overpaid for their results. i'd rather lose with kids that try than put up with more complacency. then again i will never have control of that.
@TheNYRBlog buffalo going to sign Cslly to a huge offer sheet which rangers won't match. They would be silly to
@TheNYRBlog let the sabres sign him. He is too injury prone
Garden needs a sports Czar. Dolan can't run both Knicks and Rangers. It's obvious he can't equate the difference between personal relationships with business. Example Isiah and Sather. If Dolan cares about Fans and Winning bring in someone like Checketts(from the past) and clean up the mess.
Nash is like Lindros all over again!! Concussion prone aging superstar comes to the rangers. Big guys that cant use their size.
Totally agree with Kevin, Cally is signed before the deadline. I think Girardi will be dealt before the deadline. To me the most telling part of the Booksie article was about AV not looking at any team video in the 12 weeks in between signing and camp. That seems pretty lazy. I really thought of him to be better prepared. Looking forward, blow up the bottom 2 lines and bring some grinders in...soon.
They need to keep Callahan, Not more than 4 or 5 years though, but to let him walk would NOT be the best interest for this team. Even hurt this season he has managed to make a positive difference in the games he played. Much more than Stepan who has only scored in 3 of his 32 games he played
Everytime I go to a game, I see most people wearing #24, he is the face of this franchise along with Lundqvist, imho. Lundqvist is having an even worse season than Callahan and he got his extension.
@UpstateAngler I could see that happening.
@TheNYRBlog G is gonna get his "retirement" contract from someone.Cap going up means D men are gonna get overpaid.Cally? 3x$5.0 no more.
@TheNYRBlog heck let him walk. team needs a redo.
@TheNYRBlog Nash needs to be considered tradeable as well

I know no one probably cares, but I put together a roster that I would like that will probably never happen, but I would love to see some of these moves made. Let me know what you guys think. Trades were Girardi, Hagelin, Kristo and a second for Kane. Then, DZ and a prospect for Moulson (Have to think Buffalo would be into this at the deadline as it is RFA vs. UFA with a much younger player if they can't resign him, otherwise there is always free agency). The obvious buyout of Richarrds. Then in free agency the guy I go after is Heatly. Listen he is having a horrible season right now (which means we might be able to get him at a slight discount). He has size and he knows how to score, which are two things we all want... I would be willing to go 4 years with him. This would leave us with 6.5 in cap space, so we can still make other moves (mainly on the defensive end/ 4th line) or resign guys like Stepan and Staal. Obviously, the defensive side of the team is hurt here, but the best part about this roster is the wingers... The top 3 lines both have a pair of wingers that know how to find the back of the net. I would absolutely love to have this lineup.
Well he leads the team in PP goals. He brings a passion and energy to this team and even injured brings effort. AV has defended Cally saying he does other things when questioned about Callys up and down scoring this season. You can expect 20+ goals from Cally every season, and his production has slumped because of this injuries, and the slumping of his line mates has not helped him either. He would be on pace for around 25 to 30 goals this season if he did not get hurt.
After 20 Games, people want to see him off this team? People are way off and are crazy, to throw your heart and soul player under the bus after a small sample of not playing to expectations. Quite frankly these conversations of trading him or not re-signing him are making me sick.
I just think it's funny he had 4 points in 5 games prior to being injured again, had over 10 hits in the last few games, and he is not doing anything? Come on now.
Cally is definitely going through a slump and he needs to turn it around. Having said that if you think him scoring 10 or 12 more goals so far this season is going to turn this floundering ship around then you are mistaken. The team is having a crisis of identity and realizing who they are and what they have to do to win. One player through will and talent can make a difference but they can't make up for 20 more players not playing to the level needed. Every player with one or two exceptions has got to look at what they want this season to be an then figure out what "THEY" need to do to make that happen. But based on Cally's history I am not ready to call him a injury prone has bin to be discard. It's the curse of big city teams that fans are always looking short term. That is the attitude that enables Sather to do his stupid crap and destroy what was a good homegrown team for once a few years ago.
@teemuNYR Boyle cant get anything in return....cmon Ranger fans! Hes an awful hockey player...face it
@Ksees181 Cally is a UFA. No offer sheet needed.
Aging the guy is in his late 20s...... and I guess u have seen his last 3 goals..... on how he uses his size and skill... smh
he can't walk, he has a sprained MCL ... Hahaha
Nash has a no trade clause, so it would take Nash considering himself tradeable first
@me295 @TheNYRBlog no one will ever take on nash's contract when they know hes concussion prone now.
We def care! Like yr posts and looks like u put some time in with this. ( hell more than sather apparently!)
Not sold on heatly, have to put the time in myself to see who else is available and would fit. Otherwise very nice!
D is the toughest as we don't look to have anything coming through other than Allen.
perhaps mci will learn to compensate for his lack of speed
afraid staal might never be who he once was
Imagine if we had the mgmt of Detroit Chicago Anaheim etal we wouldn't b in this mess
We d get Healy for a song right bout now... and Lindberg isn't a 4th line center it's a waste..... Go get Konapka. Good on face offs fights.. and is cheap @1 mil
@KreiderisTheChosenOne Agree except let Staal walk and bring up McIlrath
@KreiderisTheChosenOne What happened to McIlrath?
Sounds pretty good to me. Couple of side notes. What about Fast. He should crack this line up as well. Would love to sign Moulson. A guy who knows how to score from in front. I think Stralman will probably need to be in the 4myn range and will play top pair. Staal is a huge question mark with his health.
@KreiderisTheChosenOne only thing I would change is to trade cally.
@KreiderisTheChosenOneWe care. lol
People are voicing their concerns regarding how much he wants and term of contract.......There are gonna be desperate teams with alot of cap room...and will certainly over pay and out bid the rangers......and if that's the case and they can't agree be the trade dad line....trading hum for more assets isn't a bad option not saying it's the only option... but but being realistic. U will know u can't sign him cause of his demands.... why not get some talent back rather than him walk away for nothing .
@TheNYRBlog I love Cally and would hate to see him go. I just see buffalo making huge offer. They need a centerpiece
@TheNYRBlog@Ksees181If The Rangers and that is spelled S-a-t-h-e-r allow him to test free agency there will a ton of teams looking to grab him. Any coach in the NHL would love to have him play on their team.
It is clear to me that Cally playing as a Ranger has experienced for himself what it is like playing for a tight defense first coach and playing for a loose offensive minded coach. He will ask himself what kind of team and what kind of coach and what kind of organization gives me the best opportunity to win a Cup?
He would fit easily with Detroit, L.A., SJ, St. Louis, Anaheim and what is that other team in B.C.?
@TheNYRBlog btw, I really enjoy reading your stuff.
@Ksees181 If Rangers allow him to explore free agency, I 100% agree with you.
That works for a more then a handful of defense man in the current league...... and ex. BUEKEBOOM... WHEN HE PLAY. SAME TYPE OF PLAYER.
