The one name that is constantly thrown around in trade rumors involving the Rangers is Michael Del Zotto, so it's no surprise to hear Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun report that Glen Sather is shopping the embattled defenseman. However, Garrioch also notes that the Rangers could also be dangling another defenseman...Dan Girardi.
Garrioch adds that with Girardi a UFA this coming offseason, Sather might merely be exploring what they could get for the underachieving defenseman if the Rangers decide they'd rather not re-sign him.
In regards to Del Zotto, Garrioch says scouts who have watched him aren't impressed and are offering negative reports to their GMs.
League executives have told Garrioch that Sather has been working the phones trying to move several players and only Rick Nash, Henrik Lundqvist and Chris Kreider are untouchable.
...as always, take Garrioch's rumors with a grain of salt, but it's not impossible to believe Sather is offering up everyone on his team other than McDonagh and the guys mentioned. And to be honest, if Sather could find a taker for Nash and that albatross contract, I absolutely think he has to make that trade. One thing the Rangers GM won't do is sit on his hands. If he sees a trade that'll make the Rangers better, he won't hesitate. And with how things are going, I'd pretty much endorse any move Sather makes, if for no other reason than to shake this team up.
...Girardi's fate is likely tied to AV's future with the Rangers. If Sather decides he's going to build a team with players who should thrive in AV's system then Girardi's gone, but if Sather lets his new head coach take the fall for this debacle, I could see Girardi being re-signed.
...also not surprising to hear that Del Zotto is turning off scouts. He's been horrific as the turnovers continue to mount, while the goal scoring column remains stagnant. Del Zotto's trade value was likely at its highest when he was sitting in the press box.
Meanwhile, Larry Brooks at the New York Post reports that the Canadiens are willing to trade 25-year old winger Max Pacioretty and the Rangers are interested.
Unfortunately, Brooks notes that the likely asking price is McDonagh (Del Zotto will not be enough), who, as I mentioned above, isn't going anywhere.
Pacioretty, who is in the first year of a six-year deal worth $4.5M annually, has 15g, 4a on the season. The Rangers leading goal scorer is Brad RIchards with just nine.
...despite Brooks' claim, I find it very hard to believe the Canadiens are seriously looking to trade their top scorer, who they only re-signed a year ago and is just entering his prime.
...having said that, we all know Sather has fleeced the Canadiens once, any chance he can turn another underachieving, cap busting, center into a second young, dynamic, cap friendly player?
...and besides scoring, Pacioretty has the ability to mix it up which Rangers fans should be well aware of...
Why would the Habs trade their best forward? Pac's on pace of having his best season in his nhl career. And I'm not convinced trading Girardi is the answer.
No grit, no heart, no chemistry, no future, no talent....They are boring to watch. Bring up your best AHLers and let them get NHL experience. It cant be any worse than this.
@TheNYRBlog don't mess with my emotions! This would be a mistake of epic proportion.
Man its depressing in here...Anywho, lets hope we see this in a week or two. http://i.imgur.com/75IVAVa.jpg
DelZaster's not impressing scouts? I'm shocked. We said to trade him last year while he had value. When will Sather start reading this blog. Why on earth would Canadians want to trade Pacioretty? Would they take Nash per chance? Too much cap?
How about we shit can the coach ? Can't be any worse then we are already by getting a new coach in there to run things.
@TheNYRBlog 2012 me hates this idea, but 210313rd me is disturbingly ok with it. This season is doing bad things to our psyches.
Okay new rule...and I would have thought you people would've learned with the Hank debacle that I warned you about. When discussing a players value to a team in terms of extending a contract if you use the words "he has been our greatest _____ for years" you should be forced to watch Sather's next prostate exam. Past performance means sh*t. Honestly...the words "has been" are actually IN your rationale!!! How much more of a flag do you need???
Call me a fair weather fan, but my days as a Ranger fan are coming to a close. You'll probably see me less and less around here even though I LOVE this blog. Why? The management sucks, the ownership sucks, and the garden renovation made this place way over priced. I would definitely come back if Sather and AV and Nash were gone. There is no chemistry on this team and they play a boring, uninspired brand of hockey. I have no faith that Sather will change things, and those of you that do should probably have a mental exam. The best years this team had recently is when Sather had to take a backseat because of health issues, and right there tell you something. With that rant over, have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I'll maybe watch the game tonight while wrapping Christmas gifts, but that is a big maybe.
Everyone here is on the same boat. Why did we change that team so much. We dk why. Its a shame. But I guess we have to deal w who we have now. And sadly, AV is right in a way the players we have dnt fit his system. Girardi isnt playing bad and its a shame for him to leave but I can see girardi for pax being great for us. However, hes one of the last guys I care to get rid of. Why is pyatt have a job w us still. Lazy. Lackadaisical.
Going back to trading G. IMO the best trading partner would be Vancouver. He knows Torts system and thrived with Torts as coach. Question is who would VAN be willing to give up with their recent success?
Before we trade or sign anyone. Moving forward. AV. Has to be fired.... suck up the mistake and then move forward the guy sucks.
He has made it clear he doesn't like physical players. And can not and I repeat CANNOT evaluate young talent at all. Ex Miller. He is ready play 1 game. He is not ready. Brings him up. Sits him out and send him down. Everything when it comes to our young talent and possible trade chips he devalues with his indecisive bullahit....ex Del Zero. Fiasco. Should have been traded long ago... at his highest value.... AV bad mouth and the yo yo effect has made it almost impossible to get any value now
Weird. So we want to get rid of DZ but want another Dman. But instead well get rid of a solid reliable defender for a forward
Your second point was exactly what I was thinking when I started reading. If Nash is "untouchable" and Girardi is getting dangled, then Sather clearly intends to keep AV and try to build a team that suits his style this offseason, and the Rangers could have a mini fire sale this year. Really alarmed that Sather is so quick to move away from what brought this club some success for a system that can't even get us above .500.
So for anyone who wants to root for a blue collar, hard working group, you'll have to find a new team.
Next few years could be exciting....or extremely painful...
Girardi's fate is likely tied to AV's future with the Rangers. If Sather decides he's going to build a team with players who should thrive in AV's system then Girardi's gone, but if Sather lets his new head coach take the fall for this debacle, I could see Girardi being re-signed.
Definitely see this playing out this way
@TheNYRBlog Anything goes during these times. Sucks!
We were just fine before all these trades we should have kept what we had tell me arty-dubi-prust-gabby ain't missed ....
@TheNYRBlog bring prust and dubi back! Still haven't replaced prust!!!
Pacioretty would be a solid pickup but doubt we have anyone MTL would really care for. Although the trade is highly unlikely my ideal trade would be Nash, DZ and a pick for Byfuglien and Kane. The cap factor is pretty much a wash.
@TheNYRBlog trade the coach
@TheNYRBlog G straight up for Pac? I'd do that in a heart beat
I think being anything BUT a fair weather fan is a mark of stupidity. This is entertainment after all. This blog provides entertainment so I join in. Watching the games? Not so much. I watch a few minutes of each game and hope for them to lose so that MAYBE someone will be galvanized to make the wholesale changes this team needs. They are pathetic.
fair weather fan
they had to play off the joe girardi punn... it was too easy
@mando24179 Bring Back Mess.
Trade Girardi.... He had some value and I can't see paying him what he might want 3 specially showing me how he has played
@Cmosch@TheNYRBlogPrust yea Dubi no
@mobilope wouldnt do this trade at all whatsoever
@mobilope Montreal would want more.
Best thing to do is fire AV.. improve our roster with some that can adapt a system with whoever is on the team
Now that's a great coach
Can always entice Keen an to come back from Russia. Lol. Bring BACK Messier
@kingjoekur the only issue I have with it is that it depletes/exacerbates the lack of RH Dmen on the roster
@kingjoekur why not? G is going to be 30 & UFA. I never got the love affair w/him he's good but not any where near as good as some ppl think
@TheNYRBlog sure about that? They gave us McDonagh for Gomez
a lot more... especially with him being a UFA
@mando24179If Messier did his time like Roy did in the minors then giving him a chance would make sense. He's only a name at this point. No proof that it would work and he could make it even worse. If he wanted the job bad enough he should have put in his time.
@mobilope trading G only creates a hole that gets bigger when marc walks
@mobilope what d men are we bringing in/up exactly? mcdonagh cant play all 6 spots
@mobilope you dont get d men like girardi. so we staal leaves…. we will have nothing. this is a bad direction to go in imo
@kingjoekur & as much as every hates on DZ I wouldn't hesitate to trade Staal, could got a lot more for him, LH Dman are much easier to find
@kingjoekur McDonagh has been the best dman imo, and I have no prob trading G, he spends to much time on his stomach sliding out of the play
@mobilope i want no part of him. at all. dont wanna see danny go anywhere. he should be priority number 1 to bring back
@mobilope hes been our best d man for years and plus patch is a loser imo i think hes scum and is hurt far too often
@TheNYRBlog considering the McDonagh/Gomez deal, G for Pac would be an absolute win for them.
@mobilope I'd assume they learned from last time but we can hold out hope. lol
