Listen, I can live with losing. Sometimes the puck doesn't bounce your way or the opponent is just better. But what I can't tolerate is lack of effort and emotion, which, unfortunately, has become a staple of the 2013-14 Rangers.
And the worst part is the players acknowledge it yet refuse to do anything to rectify the situation:
Here's Rick Nash on the Rangers continuing to be outworked (via Bergen Record)...
“We’ve got to be playing a lot more desperate and a lot more desperate to win games,” Nash said.
“I think when you outwork teams you will find the bounces start going your way,” he continued. “When you get outworked, that’s when they seem to go against you. So, we’ve got to work — you’ve got to make your own luck. You’ve got to work for your bounces.”
...actions speak louder than words Rick. I've been hearing this garbage about how they need to work harder and play more desperate all season. As far as I'm concerned it's nothing more than lip service. If Nash and the rest of his merry men were so concerned about lack of effort maybe they should start sacking up and win some puck battles, forecheck harder and for goodness sake send some guys to the net with purpose.
...i'm a person who believes effort and emotion can beat skill in the NHL. So I don't want to hear how the Rangers aren't skilled enough to be a top team in the East. This year's roster has no less talent on it than the 2011-12 team. The biggest difference is this team isn't hungry. They don't want it bad enough. There's zero passion from the players right up to the coaching staff. They are an embarrassing representative of the city of New York.
...not having the heart and soul of the team for most of the season definitely hurts, but there's enough veteran leadership in that locker room to overcome Callahan's absence. And let's be honest, it's not like the Rangers have played that much harder when he's been in the lineup. And for that reason, AV has to take a major hit. For whatever the reason, he does not have this team ready to play emotionally or physically when it's time to drop the puck. You have to wonder if it might be time to drop him.
While Nash's comments are insulting to my intelligence at least he's not as delusional as Lundqvist...
“This is definitely a frustrating game, there’s no question we beat ourselves,” Lundqvist said. “We made some simple mistakes and I was not there to clean it up in the first. We didn’t give up much but they had a few chances and as a goalie you try to battle and be there to make those saves for us to stay confident. But I wasn’t able to come up with the saves in the first and it kind of set the tone for the whole game. I thought we were the better team."
...is Lundqvist kidding me?!?!?! The better team?!?!?! You lost by two goals to one of the worst teams in the NHL and are currently 1-4-2 on your homestand. The Rangers haven't been the better team this entire season.
And how about the Tortorella led Canucks last night who had their own two goal comeback against the Blackhawks. The only difference...they held on to win and are now 8-1-1 in the month of December. Here's the Canucks locker room after the big win (H/T reader cardboardcllctr)...
...hmmmm, that victory song in the background sounds exactly like the one Rangers fans never get to hear at the Garden.
...good thing the Rangers players who ratted out Torts were so sick of having similar post game celebrations in their locker room. Hope they're enjoying the current peace and quiet.
whaaaaaat!!!! the rangers being outworked you can't be serious. mcdonagh can't be that tired yet. oh, you mean the rest of the team. i think they're saving themselves for the playoffs !!!!
The Rangers/Islanders rivalry is much more important to the Islanders players than to the current Rangers team. Members of the Islanders Alumni Association like Nystrom,Gillies, Tonelli, Henning and others who have settled on Long Islandattend games and psyche up the locker room before the games reminding current players about how important the win is and how much they hate the Rangers. They also financially support any players (ex or current) children who play hockey. My daughter played with an ex-players daughter and she payed zilch.
I was wrong about Krieder and now I am wrong about Torts. So I'm afraid to make a judgement about AV.Except this: this team is playing the New York Country Club game.Who's to blame for that? Finding that out is the first step.
http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=697112&navid=nhl:topheads To think this 42 year old would be by far the best player on our team...
Other than trading cali I agree with everything in this articlehttp://bleacherreport.com/articles/1897031-changes-new-york-rangers-must-make-before-2014-winter-olympic-break
I'm going to go ahead and say as of now, I hope they keep loosing. Something will change sooner than later that way. Line up changes, coaching, contract distractions, new players are all a thing of the past.... There is no excuse now.....
Am I the only one sick and tired of watching the Nash pirouette over the blue line and then lose the puck without getting off a shot? Jaromir puts Nash to shame even at 41.
Did you see the MSG special on Dorsett? If he worked on a farm he didn't lift any bales of hay. His arms look like a freshman in high school. No wonder he can't win any fights.
I don't remember Lundquist flopping on his belly so much. he looks jittery in the cage, too. Maybe the world championships will bring him out of it.
AV is the new Tom Renney except Renney had better players. The Rangers reflect the passionless AV. This team is going under.
I think you are a little too critical on Callahan, since he has done more good things that you are not giving him credit for. Yeah he has been up and down, but had multiple injuries to deal with, with no proper training camp or pre-season. The guy deserves a pass. Also Rangers record with Cally in the line-up is 12-10-1, without him they are 5-7-1, not counting the Nashville game since he only played 3 mins.
Its not a couple of players. Its the entire team. Im blaming everyone. Defense every night is a disgrace. Idc how boring it was w Torts and how bad our pp sucked. We won games. Idk if torts had many back to back losses let alone a losing streak. We had a growing organization. Now we have the same shit we had pre lock out. Big names, bad team. Idc anymore. This team has to change face. The entire roster is screwed. Sathrr is to blame. And I stuck up for the guy for the last few years
This is a team filled with players that come from a losing culture. You take all those Columbus players and put Rangers sweaters on them and what do you have? Columbus players. They needed to bring in someone (or still need to) that has a history of winning. Someone that has played on cup winners (Richards 2004 win doesn't count). Until they do, all they will know is losing. Losing doesn't make them uncomfortable enough because for the most part, that's all they know.
i see what lundquvist is saying tho.. we coulda had 10 goals in that first period and we had more scoring chances then they did... if he plays better we easily coulda won that game.. u cant give up two shorthanded goals rite off the bat and expect moral not to be down.... our powerplay was terrible but besides that we were the better team... you know how everyteam has a go to go on the powerplay for the shot like ovechkin and stamkos and how jagr used to be the one for us. for some reason av has picked brad richards to be that guy and hes horrible... if he even gets the shot through the dman in front of him it goes wide and out the otherside and out the zone.. he doesnt belong on the point and he def dont belong being that guy on the 5 on 3 u setup for the shot.. and the fact that they keep doing it when its not working is bothering the shit out of me... try using someone else we have great shooters... ive said this a hundred times but the guy a play with is a rangers practice goalie and he says zuccarello has the best shot on the team... or try kreider.. or set nash up in the spot we were setting him up in last year... for some reason were setting up richards and every team knows it and we havent changed nething to correct it
its also possible sather is letting the ship sink so he doesnt have to look so bad canning AV, you know giving him no choice it would also help him keep salary down on some of the free agents
Sather is not going anywhere, so AV must go and sooner then later then the players need to start being shipped out. I would rather a shitty team with an inexperienced coach (messier) then this garbage. We as some of all sports most dedicated fans should not have to put up with this, watching this and hearing excuses night after night is insulting.
If they don't know that they have to work hard in this league to win by now, they never will. Shit can them all.
Vancouver has been putting up good regular seasons for years. It's a better roster. Let's all stop the romanticizing of the Torts era. Torts was a decent coach but he didn't win squat here and we had the same problems Sather created. No goal scoring. Bad PP. Uneven roster. Bad contracts. Only reason we had any success was because of Hank and Torts having 5 guys collapsing in front of him. There was little to no offensive consistency for years. All we had most nights was endless cycling with no results. It was beyond boring to watch and frustrating to see guys getting injured trying to take pucks for the team. Torts didn't do much adapting other than realizing early on Sather handed him a weak deck offensively - so he had them go into a block pucks at all cost shell and he rode Hank into the ground along with Girardi, Cally and McD - hence the loss to the Devils in the East Finals. Yes there was more fire in the roster it seems, but that's it. Results were the same. Same for Dubi - what did he do here? Put up lame numbers and hold the team hostage for more money every chance he got. Oh and he lost most of the fights he got in. Problems start at top with Sather. AV might not be doing well yet, but it's not even one half a season. Yes they suck now and we're all angry but don't let that make you lose your common sense.
let the angry responses begin! I'm going to look for Santa in Brooklyn and ask him for a Christmas Miracle...
Right on Kevin. I look forward to sitting down with my kid to watch every Ranger game but it is extremely disappointing this season. There is no excuse for last nite's disgusting display. The Rangers are never first to any puck and they consistently go through the motions. They don't look like they care much at all. THEY LOST TO THE ISLANDERS!!!!
Never waned Nash, Dubi and Artie may not be as "talented" as him but they have something he hasn't shown yet HEART!
@TheNYRBlog why dont they just keep Mclratg up for an enforcer
@TheNYRBlog Good article! I, too, am tired of the same ol, "gosh, schuks, we got to give better effort" There's no one lighting a fire
@TheNYRBlog players always say they were outworked when they lose because they can't bring themselves to say that they aren't good enough
he would've been a solid pickup, especially at $2M.
I love Jagr.
Callahan has talent and skill and can score goals, to trade him would make things worse, and Cally has not had the chance to adjust to AV's system. Cally also imo has shown signs of adjusting unlike most of the team. 13 point n 23 games (don't count nashville) is certainly just average but it's between several injuries.
Spot on......that roster has won... President cup Etc....they have a far better roster... so all the Torts praise is bullshit...... people need to take their heads outta their asses
@TheJamesLeBlanc I refuse to believe that. Rangers are a much better team than Islanders. They just aren't hungry.
this whole season has become a joke tell me you wouldnt rather see a bunch of kids trying then this crap
Torts' roster in Vancouver right now is not the same roster AV had in Vancouver. At the moment, they have no 4th line (Welsh/Sestito/Dalpe/Weise, who are all NHL fringe players), no wing to play with the Sedins (Burrows is out), no All star Defensemen (Edler is out), no lockdown Dman (recently injured Ryan Stanton).
Their 3rd line often consists of 2 "new guys" (Richardson, Santorelli) and their 2nd line features 1 "star calibre" player (Kesler) with 2 guys that have struggled elsewhere (Higgins, Booth).
On D, they have Hamhuis and some younger Dmen (Garrison, Tanev) who are beginning to play to their potential. His last pairing is Andrew Alberts and Yanick Weber (aka 7th dman and fringe NHLer who spent time up until recently in Utica),
Let's not kid ourselves here and give the man credit. He's got his guys running right now. That is not AV's Nucks.
the sooner we blow it up the sooner we recover
And we'll watch as he again burns out everyone in the stretch run / first round. Nucks won't last past round 2.
blocks out dick but not fuck. hahahahaha
@cardboardcllctrI never said the Canucks roster was identical every year. No teams' roster is. I said their roster is better. It is now and has been for a long time.
Kesler, not Kessel, who according to some underperformed under AV. Sedins as "grit and tough"? That's why people laughed when Torts said they'll block shots, right? Come on man, don't tell me you've never heard of the "Sedin Sisters" taunt.... As for Bieksa, he's rugged - just like Dan Girardi was in the last few years.
After 30+ games, I think it's just time to admit that Torts is helping his team (and good on him) while AV either needs to change his system, or Sather needs to get AV players who can play the new system. It's not only on AV and Sather too, the players threw the old coach out, now its tme to perform under the new one.
Fuck AV AND Torts their both aholes.... they can both suck a D**k
When u have Kessel. Sedin twins.. grit and tough players and a rugged dmen in Bieksa..... that shit was given to him on a silver plate..
