The New York Rangers (20-19-2) defeated the Florida Panthers (15-20-6) by the score of 2-1 in a shootout, last night. For a box score, go to Yahoo! Sports.
...a mediocre effort masked by the heroics of their goaltender? It's good to have our Rangers back.
...welcome to the 2013-14 season Henrik Lundqvist!!!!
...Girardi went from unmovable in the second period to hot commodity in the third.
...Richards continues to outplay Nash. (Buyout Watch)
...McDonagh had more offensive chances in OT than the last few weeks.
...23 minutes of ice time for Staal? Nice to see AV ease him back into the lineup.
...another unnoticeable game for Allen. Which is a good thing. Del Zotto might want to get comfortable in that press box or start looking at homes in Ottawa.
...so who had Brassard, Zuccarello, Pouliot, Richards and McDonagh as the Rangers top power play unit going into the season? And even more amazing is that Pouliot is the difference maker.
...why does AV refuse to use Kreider in overtime?
...since I decided to lower my expectations of the Rangers after the Islanders loss, they've gone 4-1-0 and actually played some pretty good hockey. Funny how that happens. Was this a sloppy victory against a bad team? Sure, but are Rangers fans really in position to complain about wins these days? I don't think so.
...off until Friday when the Rangers take on the
mightly under-manned Penguins.
...Happy New Year's everyone!!!!
Post game talk...
It's not who is worse but who is earning their contract
Zucc is now the biggest ranger bargain in history!
i thought nash looked good last 2 games. almost scored in OT, playing with more passion. talent-wise he is on another planet than richards... and richards press talk is beyond annoying. he's a buyout, no brainer
Aside from Kevin, you seem to have the best insight of this team. I too have been contemplating of the buyout between Richards and Nash. This would be an interesting discussion for the blog, as there are pros and cons for each, i.e.. contract length, amount, worth, tradability. If I remember correctly, doesn't Richards contract actually only pays him one million per the last three years (which should make him much more tradable if we take back a limited bad contract)? Very curious... how old are you?
Ha...I love the debate below regarding who is WORSE...Richards or Nash. Wow...so it's come to that? ....they are both players that you wish you could get off the team. As I've said before, the NYR will not win the Cup with Nash here. He is a black hole for hockey energy and tremendously overrated - Sather does not have the chops to create a top tier team working around the ill-conceived salaries of Nash and Hank. That said, Nash would likely be easier to move as someone may take a chance on him, Richards...no way. Trade Nash...buy Richards out. Still...Nash is garbage and only short-sighted Nash apologists come up with ways to rationalize his incompetence. There are probably 50 players in the NHL who would have an impact on EVERY single shift...even if the rest of their line was comprised of PeeWee players. Nash is invisible 95% of every game. He is the definition of a non-impact player.
I think one of the biggest issues with Kreider is that he takes penalties at pretty terrible times. More than once this season Kreids has taken a penalty within the last 3-4 minutes of a game. I know the only way for Kreids to become a better player is to put him in all situations but he needs to be more disciplined. I'm not saying he's a penalty machine, but he just needs to be smarter in crunch time.
Richards out played Nash? Nash scores 5 on 5 and in the first 3 periods and Richards manages a shout out goal. Explain how does he out play Nash?
Kevin here is an interesting fact. After 41 games the only Rangers player with a positive +\-? Chris Kreider at +10. That should tell you guys something
Happy New Year Kevin. Thanks for all your work on this great blog. Also thanks to Adam and the other contributors.
Mediocre? Ha. Those guys are the Panthers and not the Pushovers any more. They are good and their recent record shows it. When Tim Thomas plays a game like he did, they are very tough to beat, especially at home. If Lindback was in there, we would have had four goals again.
And no mention of the gutsy comeback and the dominating OT? When was the last time we took four points in Florida especially against two good teams? Good job by our boys.
Allen was not good last night. He seemed physically overmatched and had some bad turnovers. Still, he's a big plus over DZ and Falk and hopefully will adapt to the NHL.
Both goalies played well and it's baby steps we're taking now to be a better team....Not a great game by the Rangers, but better then about a week ago....I hear ya on Kreider not playing in OT, would love to see him play there but IMO AV doesn't trust him enough yet to not take a penalty at an important time....The only thing I can think of., but we win the game and seem to play better on the road right now....LGR
@TheNYRBlog agreed mediocre on 5v5
Still Nash has managed to get on the scoresheet 2 games in a row. Meet our new sniper everyone. Dan Girardi. Mats who??? Nice to see Richey actually clutch out! Happy New Year NYRB and friends!!!
@TheNYRBlog ah sarcasm...I see what you did there.
gotta be richards. he is older, slower and at least Nash USED to throw some hits
@mando24179Nash scored last night?
yea i agree... Richards has been garbage the last three weeks Kevin... a shootout goal doesn't change that. Now by no means am I saying Nash has been a world-beater, but Richards contract is 100 times worse than Nash's.
that they suck at even strength?
He is one of the best fowards..... He should play.... and get game experience in all aspects. How are u gonna know how and what he will do if he never plays him.....
Great point.... but some reason Richards has been getting a free pass.... and all the blame is falling on Nash now..... Guys had concussion issues and there is no one in the line up to protect him......from cheap shots and head shots...
Hey scored the night before... but no he didn't and neither do Richards... SO goals....are garbage.... He hasn't scored... full strength or power play in a while... so ur point is mute..... Richards didn't score as well..... last night...During the game or in OT
@mando24179 McD looked a little shaky in his first few games as well. Trust him more than Del Zotto and McIlrath.
@mando24179 Once you mute your phone, the point becomes moot.
If u can't figure out that it's the auto insert on my phone....that is doing it. Don't know what to tell u..
@mando24179 Who taught you how to form a complete sentence?
With his contract and talent it should never come to a shoot out..... from him he should be producing.....
. When one of the enigmas on the team like Pouliot. Can score on a penalty shot. ... is embarrassing. For Richards... Penalty shots are important in a game but when u use to compare it against. Nash not scoring compared to Richards not scoring in the same game and then does om a penalty shot. Yeah it's garbage
Yeah I agree with Kev about shootout goals. As long as they get you a point, they're still pretty damn important.
@mando24179How are shootout goals garbage? It gave the Rangers an extra point last night.
The non buyout of Richey was the hugest blow to this team for this season. I was shocked when it happened as it was a no brainer leading to my belief our GM is Lobotomized. With that cap space we could have gotten the type of players we need to be competitive. The Richey apologists were saying how he's working hard getting prepared and the free agent market was weak.yada yada and he did come out with more jump in his game and was rewarded with a few lucky goals but he's declining over all and never was as great as people believe IMO. His top seasons of 91 Points is impressive but is too soft on D for a Centerman and generally lacked the presence to be a dominant player. Also we did not need a marquis free agent last off season but rather tough grinding players who can open space for the smaller guys and wear down opponents. Nash on the other hand is younger and has the tools to be a higher impact player. I've got to believe the concussions have compromised his game. There was a time he use to actually hit people and pay the price. Given the 2 Id keep Nash but he's one serious concussion away from retirement and because our brilliant GM kept Richey we lack the resources to bring in the tough guys who reduce the odds of him getting cheap shotted. Slats is short sighted and arrogant from what I see. He was a tough guy on the ice. How the f*ck does he build a soft team as GM to not protect his highly expensive commodities?
@JoshKaye@Kevin DeLury@KreiderisTheChosenOne@mando24179 You receive some sort of attention from Richards or something Kevin? Last time I checked, teams werent exactly swarming Richards like they frequently did Nash and I could count on one hand how many times Richards actually hit a player on the opposing team even accidentally
Both have been garbage this season, but if he doesn't put in the effort on that play Richie doesn't even get a chance for a shootout goal. Both had one good moment last night and both led to a win. Neither player has done well this season and I refuse to say Richie has had a good season. His goals at the beginning of the season were all flukes and he had the mightiest of luck on his side. Now that he has to use his declining skill he's done nothing. Hardly anyone on this team has done a damn thing.
We need a complete make over of our roster keep certain people and dump the rest.....
Every team that wins cups has skilled guys. Toughness an enforcer. And role players. Our bottom six. Are marginal role players. Our Top six. Have some skill but most. Are not too 1 or 2 line talent...
We need a coach he realizes u change ur system to ur players strengths do to the roster u have....... Go see Tampa Bay b4 and then after they lost Stamps as an example.
And that's is why I don't anoint anyone after 1 game....the real deal... makes no sense doing that... He has potential. Sure. Teal deal lets get at least 20 to 30. Games. And the way AV is. He is lucky if he reaches that. The way he treats rookie call up....... see Miller as an example
